Papanosh « A chicken in a bottle » - Bilan Moral de la tournée Pays Baltes, Finlande, Europe de l’Est du 18 avril au 2 mai 2017 / Les vibrants défricheurs Le bilan de cette tournée est très positif : la fréquentation des concerts ainsi que l'engouement des publics (avertis ou non) nous encouragent à penser que notre musique a été très appréciée! Nous avons été enthousiasmés par la diversité des lieux nous accueillant : festivals de jazz (Tallinn Jazzkaar, Daugavpils jazz Joy Spring, Katowice Jazz Art festival), club (Vilnius), centre de musiques traditionnelles (Viljandi), école de musique (Turku), centres culturels (Ventspils, Türi, Gulbene), musée (Salo), avec une mention spéciale pour le festival de Katowice nous proposant un triptyque : concert dans un grand club, bal le lendemain dans un bar, puis concert à la prison dans le quartier des femmes - une expérience forte et inoubliable. Il a été prolifique pour le groupe de jouer tant de fois d'affilée, l'évolution et la connivence musicales s'en sont ressenties. Nous avons noué des liens avec des partenaires qui nous l'espérons se reconduiront dans l'avenir : Jazzkaar et Katowice souhaitent nous faire revenir d'ici deux ou trois ans, avec d'autres possibilités, tels des stages ...Le concert au Budapest Music Center en fin de tournée a laissé entrevoir la possibilité pour le groupe d'enregistrer un prochain disque sur le label BMC. Au final, la rencontre avec Charles Gil a été incroyable, tant professionnellement que humainement, et il est évident qu'il est dorénavant un partenaire du groupe. Papanosh « A chicken in a bottle » - Bilan Moral de la tournée Pays Baltes, Finlande, Pologne du 18 au 30 avril 2017 / Vapaat äänet Partager la route pendant deux semaines avec les doux allumés de Papanosh s’est avéré un pur bonheur. J’ai pu jauger de la vivacité de cette aventure collective qui s’épanoui depuis une dizaine d’années. Papanosh est un groupe rare et précieux. Voilà ce qu’écrit Jarmo Wallenius dans le Turun sanomat, grand quotidien régional, au sujet du concert à l’école de musique de la communauté urbaine de Turku : « En France, les collectifs jouent un rôle important dans la vie du jazz depuis de nombreuses années. L’Arfi, créée à Lyon il y a quarante années s’avère surement le plus connu d’entre eux. Le quintet Papanosh pour sa part fait partie du collectif Les vibrants défricheurs. Le groupe est en activité depuis dix ans, et cela s’est entendu au concert de Turku, à travers un solide jeu collectif et une alchimie interne des plus naturelles. Ainsi, Papanosh n’a eu aucune difficulté à emporter l’adhésion de ses auditeurs : leur prestation s’est avérée un subtil cocktail de langage visionnaire, de pur talent, de maitrise des racines du jazz, de chaos organisé, et d’humour absurde. » Les autres réactions témoignent du même engouement pour, tel l’article en anglais commentant le concert de Tallinn, que Quel honneur pour moi de décrocher le pompon de Partenaire de Papanosh. La réussite de cette tournée m’a fortement incité à inviter ce quintet de luxe au festival Raahe - Jazz on the Beach, les 28 et 29 juillet 2018. On 25th of April Papanosh performed with their fresh album Chicken In A Bottle which should be a synonym to “variation”. With Papanosh you get everything. Sweet tender slow music, progressive, spontaneous outbursts contrasted with calculated melodies. Explosive, upbeat rhythm to sombre notes. In minutes, the atmosphere of the whole hall changes from euphoric to meditative. The unpredictability of the entire process and their attitude towards the construction of the performance lead to tension and pure joy. You could see people smiling and swaying along, one moment to a smooth funeral song, the next moment to an explosive drum solo. They also included a peculiar physical performance element in addition to the music where a guy on the piano controlled the band on his arm, moving like a wave back and forth, and as the wave progressed the music got speedy, intricate, loud. When the wave (read: hand) regressed, so did the music into something very quiet, soft and reflective. They have played together essentially for ten years now, and it is very exciting to see their effortless intra-band communication. They are going all in and just enjoying, whilst the outcome is baffling. Chicken In A Bottle is a nice compressed form of a whole spectrum of moods and tempos, a nice compressed form of craziness. Papanosh: A Chicken in a Bottle

Papanosh originate in the northern French city of Rouen and have been together over 10 years. This
second CD of somewhat discordant, deconstructed hard bop is another example of their concept of
an imagined folklore, a new musical tradition created together by musicians and listeners in their
shared synergy. It involves widely varied music that, with its sudden twists and surprises, seems at
times to be being played with five tongues in five respective cheeks.
With most melodies revolving around the interplay of the tenor or alto sax of Raphael Quenfren and
the trumpet of Quentin Ghomari there is much to remind the listener of both Eric Dolphy (the
inspiration for the album title!) and Monk. The tunes tumble and rollick often with a very danceable
rhythm propelled by Jérémie Piazza on drums and bongos, and Thibault Cellier on bass. Indeed the
five musicians are responsible for all but one compositions, and all could be considered as a leader of
the ensemble.
Maybe though the one cover version brings out the true mettle of the band, a slinky version of
George Stone's Plain Gold Ring, originally made famous by Nina Simone and more recently Nick Cave.
With the two horns blowing over a prepared piano riff it suggests subtlety and more than a hint of
temperament beneath the surface. When these sounds fade the band launches straight into Cellier's
rumbling, raunchy El Toro, punctuated by stabs of Sebastien Palis' Hammond style organ, and we are
back on a roller-coaster trip of contemporary bop.
These musicians are deservedly gaining recognition outside their homeland, having taken it this year
to Winter Jazz in New York, as well as recording there with Marc Ribot and Roy Nathanson. We must
wait and see which direction they will be taking with their music after this cheeky offering. To finish
this album, another soulful piano centered ballad is dedicated to an unknown individual, 'Pour André.
One can only guess that it is a current godfather of French style, but true to style the listener must
provide his or her own associations (Gide, Previn, Agassi...?).
