Language list French Language of Material French, English, German Context Historical Note Founded in 1889 as a loose, international confederation of autonomous socialist political parties and trade union organizations, which met as International Socialist Congresses; had no permanent organization until the International Socialist Bureau was established as a coordinating body in 1900; after the anarchists were excluded in 1896, by committing the member parties to parliamentary political action, the Second International united all sorts of social democrats, from reformist to revolutionary, with Marxist influence prevailing in its programmatic statements; having a high profile as a peace preserving factor by its prewar declarations, the Second International collapsed when member parties in the belligerent countries sided with their governments in 1914; roughly parallel with the prewar internal left-center-right division the wartime split was formalized with the foundation of the Communist International (COMINTERN) in 1919 and the International Working Union of Socialist Parties (IWUSP) in 1921 alongside the remnants of the Second International, which was reorganized as Labour and Socialist International, London Secretariat 1921-1923. Acquisition The archives were deposited at the IISH in 1951 by J. Brauntal, see Annual Report 1951, p. 12. Content and Structure Content Collection of agenda, circulars, tickets of admission, reports, drafts of resolutions, statements and press clippings: on congresses and conferences 1889-1922; on the International Socialist Bureau 1899-1914, 1919-1921; on women's conferences 1907, 1910, 1915-1916. Arrangement La 'Collection Deuxieme Internationale' se compose de documents d'origine diverse. Elle embrasse la période 1889-1922. L'étendue est de 0,60 m. Dans les descriptions on a donné préférence à la langue française en rapport avec la publication de Georges Haupt " La Deuxième Internationale 1889-1914/Étude critique des sources/Essai bibliografique", Paris/La Haye, 1964. S'il n'y a pas de texte français on a décrit les documents anglaise ou allemands (et en certain cas documents en quelques autres langues). Le citations 'Haupt no.....' renvoyent à la publication susmentionnée. Les pieces du 6ième Congres (Amsterdam. 1904) jusqu'au 8ième Congres (Copenhague, 1910), décrites plus tard, sont ajoutées dans un supplément (voyez no. 390-489). Dans la période 1914-1918 seulement une véritable conférence de la Deuxième International est tenue: la Conférence socialiste internationale de Stockholm, 1917. Les autres conférences, convoquées afin de contribuer à terminer la guerre, n'ont pu réunir qu'une partie des pays affiliés (p.e. la Conférence des pays neutres groupements.
