Le Festival du Cinéma Américain de Deauville a toujours voulu, par le choix de ses Jurés,
affirmer crédibilité, légitimité, générosité et amour du cinéma. Aussi cette édition ne
dérogera pas à la règle, en se réjouissant de la qualité des personnalités qui forment ce Jury,
pour qui l’art témoigne dans la création d’une puissance de vie inégalée.

Deauville présentera trois adaptations cinématographiques de son œuvre.

On the occasion of John Grisham’s visit, the Deauville American Film Festival will
present three cinematic adaptations of his work.

Né en 1955 à Jonesboro (Arkansas, États-Unis), JOHN GRISHAM est l’auteur de vingt-neuf romans de
fiction, d’un roman témoignage et de six livres pour la jeunesse. Diplômé d’une licence de droit, il
intègre un bureau d’avocats où il exerce pendant dix ans, se spécialisant sur les cas criminels. En 1984,
lors d’un procès, il est bouleversé par le témoignage d’une enfant victime de viol et se décide à écrire
son premier roman, Non coupable. Nombre de ses romans appartiennent au sous-genre du roman
judiciaire.

Plusieurs de ses ouvrages ont été adaptés au cinéma, parmi lesquels La Firme de Sydney Pollack (1993),
avec Tom Cruise, L’Affaire Pélican d’Alan J. Pakula (1993), avec Julia Roberts et Denzel Washington, Le
Client de Joel Schumacher (1994), avec Susan Sarandon et Tommy Lee Jones, L’Idéaliste de Francis Ford
Coppola (1997), avec Matt Damon, ou encore The Gingerbread Man de Robert Altman (1998), avec
Kenneth Branagh et Robert Downey Jr.

Born in 1955 in Jonesboro, Arkansas (USA), JOHN GRISHAM wrote twenty-nine novels, one non-fiction
novel and six children’s books. After the completion of a license degree in law, he worked for a law firm
for a decade, specializing himself in criminal cases. In 1984, during a trial, he was shaken by the
testimony of a young raped girl which drove him into the writing of his first novel, A Time to Kill. Most
of his work belong to the judicial genre.

Several of his novels were adapted for the big screen, including Sydney Pollack’s The Firm (1993) with
Tom Cruise, Alan J. Pakula’s The Pelican Brief (1993) starring Julia Roberts and Denzel Washington, Joel
Schumacher’s The Client (1994) starring Susan Sarandon and Tommy Lee Jones, Francis Ford Coppola’s
The Rainmaker (1997), with Matt Damon, and Robert Altman’s The Gingerbread Man (1998) starring
Kenneth Branagh and Robert Downey Jr.

LE ROMAN
Des malfaiteurs dévalisent la bibliothèque de l’Université de Princeton. Leur butin est déclaré d’une
valeur inestimable, mais Princeton l’a assuré pour vingt-cinq millions de dollars.
Bruce Cable possède une célèbre librairie à Santa-Rosa, une bourgade tranquille sur l’île Camino, en
Floride. Bien que son affaire soit prospère, l’argent provient surtout du commerce de livres de
collection. Peu de gens, toutefois, savent que Cable a souvent recours au marché parallèle et que
passent entre ses mains manuscrits et ouvrages volés.
Mercer Mann est une jeune romancière. Elle souffre d’une angoisse aiguë de la page blanche et vient
de perdre son poste d’enseignante. Elle est contactée par une femme mystérieuse travaillant pour une
société tout aussi mystérieuse. On lui offre une coquette somme pour infiltrer Bruce Cable et son

A gang of thieves stage a daring heist from a secure vault deep below Princeton University’s Firestone
Library. Their loot is priceless, but Princeton has insured it for twenty-five million dollars.
Bruce Cable owns a popular bookstore in the sleepy resort town of Santa Rosa on Camino Island in
Florida. He makes his real money, though, as a prominent dealer in rare books. Very few people know
that he occasionally dabbles in the black market of stolen books and manuscripts.
Mercer Mann is a young novelist with a severe case of writer’s block who has recently been laid off
from her teaching position. She is approached by an elegant, mysterious woman working for an even
more mysterious company. A generous offer of money convinces Mercer to go undercover and infiltrate
Bruce Cable’s circle of literary friends, ideally getting close enough to him to learn his secrets.
But eventually Mercer learns far too much, and there’s trouble in paradise as only John Grisham can
deliver it.
