UNBEARABLY
Stéphane Gautier est un de ces créateurs « hors norme » que l’on
rencontre en dehors des sentiers battus de l’art contemporain et
qui possède cependant un langage singulier et direct. Son travail se
situe à la frontière subtile du design et de l’art et nous étonne par sa
FABULOUS
pertinence et son efficacité plastiques.
Au-delà de son caractère percutant, l’univers de Stéphane Gautier ouvre cependant des
espaces de réflexion et de miroir sur notre propre enfance, sa dimension mémorielle
et universelle, ses symboles, la sacralisation qu’elle suscite en nous. Stéphane Gautier
réalise son premier tableau à l’âge de 13 ans, en décidant de coller et de peindre
ses jouets sur une toile. Premier geste provocateur et genèse artistique qui, retrouvé
des années plus tard, suscite émotion et reconnaissance de la part de tous ceux qui
découvrent les objets affectifs qui ont marqué leur passé.
L’art de Stéphane Gautier est en décalage permanent. Déplaçant l’objet d’un contexte
à l’autre, réinjectant les symboles stéréotypés de l’enfance vers un environnement
d’adultes, il détourne tous les codes de l’art traditionnel (tableaux, peintures, sculptures,
dessins) pour se les réapproprier. Et c’est par cette distance ironique que ce créateur
intuitif nous invite à un propos plus profond sur les moyens de la représentation, sur
l’efficacité de la publicité et de la propagande et enfin sur la sacralisation et le
détournement des nostalgies de l’enfance.
Stéphane Gautier is one of those “extraordinary” creators that one comes across off the
beaten track of contemporary art, yet who uses a language that is unusual and direct.
His work is located on the fine line between design and art, and surprises us with its
relevance and visual effectiveness.
Beyond its forceful nature, however, Stéphane Gautier’s world opens up spaces for
reflection that hold a mirror up to our childhood, with its memories and its universal
dimension, its symbols and the sacralisation it sparks off in us. Stéphane Gautier created
his first picture at the age of 13, deciding to stick and paint his toys on a canvas. This
first provocative gesture and artistic genesis, which, rediscovered years later, arouses
emotion and recognition in all those who see the emotional objects that marked their
past.
The art of Stéphane Gautier is permanently shifting. By moving an object from one
context to another, re-injecting the stereotypical symbols of childhood into an adult
setting, he turns away from all traditional codes of art (pictures, paintings, sculptures,
drawings) only to reappropriate them. And it is by way of this ironic distance that this
intuitive creator invites us to a deeper consideration of the means of representation, of
the effectiveness of advertising and propaganda, and finally of the sacralisation
and misappropriation of childhood nostalgia.
