With technology changing so rapidly and information at our fingertips, now
more than ever where you're from isn't as important as what you know. This
presentation will touch on issues to which we, working in rural and remote
communities, can all relate: developing a project in multiple locations,
adopting existing models to small communities, and the challenges and
benefits of multi-community partnerships.

Collaboration, Communication and Reconciliation through the Performing Arts

During this presentation, Frank will share a collection of stories (some
humorous, some not) about his experiences using the arts to break down
barriers in order to establish meaningful and productive communication with
inmates during his career with Correctional Service of Canada. John will
share his experience with the conception, creation, and performance of a
musical work that was both historically accurate and culturally sensitive
and had an objective of providing hope for reconciliation. The work was
commissioned to commemorate the 400th anniversary of the arrival of
Champlain in Huronia.

Unpacking the Dynamics between Presenter, Artist, and Audience: A Dialogue
Rebecca Desmarais, Tour Producer, 2b theatre company, Halifax, Nova Scotia

This session will attempt to unpack the intricate and dynamic relationship
between presenter, artist, and audience. Each has their own context,
intentions, and goals for why they choose to create, present, or experience
a piece of work; in fact, each can operate largely independent of the other.
Our contention is that those three entities form one continuous fabric, or
ecology, that would significantly benefit from more open and thoughtful
dialogue. Inga and Rebecca will identify some of the different, and perhaps
seemingly competing, goals and intentions, leading a conversation about the
interplay between them. They will explore the ways in which each
relationship affects the outcomes of all. The session will investigate where
some of the greatest tensions lie within these relationships, and how we
might move forward to help one another realize our goals.MAY 24 – 27 MAI 2018

Mieux comprendre la dynamique entre le présentateur, l’artiste et le public : un dialogue
Cette session décortiquera la relation complexe et dynamique entre le
présentateur, l’artiste et le public. Chacun a son contexte, ses intentions
et ses objectifs en choisissant de créer, de présenter et d’expérimenter une
oeuvre quelconque; en fait, chacun pourrait travailler seul, indépendamment
des autres. Notre position est que ces trois entités forment en fait un
tissu commun, une écologie qui bénéficierait grandement d’un dialogue plus
ouvert et réfléchi. Inga and Rebecca vont identifier certains objectifs et
intentions qui semblent contradictoires et mèneront une discussion au sujet
de leur interdépendance. Elles tenteront de démontrer comment chaque
relation influence les résultats de tous. On examinera ensemble où se
situent certaines des plus grandes tensions au sein de ces relations et

Networking between networks supports the performing arts in a myriad of
essential ways. Individual networks offer a specialized service – they meet
the specific needs of their members. However, when two or more networks work
together to make connections, leveraging resources and collaborating on
issues of common concern, they can speak with a very powerful voice.
Networks give birth to other networks, and the cross-pollination of ideas,
people, and best practices that occurs when members of various networks
converge often leads to transformative initiatives and ideas.

Discovering Your Constellation: Connecting Culture in Rural and Remote Communities

Although the word ‘partnerships’ is not exclusive to rural and remote
communities, we do seem to be more dependent upon them; perhaps we even
uniquely define the word. Dom and Réjeanne from Le Conseil des arts
Temiskaming Arts Council will recount how they have mobilized organisations
and municipalities across their region over the past six years, working with
all three main cultural communities (Francophone, Anglophone, and First
Nations) to slowly but surely form a bilingual regional arts council.
Caroline will share her experiences with and knowledge of Culturat, an arts
and cultural hub in neighbouring Abitibi-Témiscamingue just across our
provincial border. Culturat has achieved international recognition for
their cultural development work based on the principles of Agenda 21 for
Culture. Come to share, listen, and consider the possibilities for your
community’s unique cultural constellation.

mask, gaining insights into ways of utilizing masks in their own communities

Artists may have the privilege of finding satisfaction and great joy in
their work, yet work it remains. This is a hugely important, highly
emotional, and inordinately intricate topic: what, when, and how do artists
get paid? Do you believe that tying art to a paycheque belittles the
talents of those who have other reasons for creating? Or do you agree that
it is entirely nonsensical to expect artists to donate their time and
efforts (are lawyers asked to donate divorce settlements to community
fundraisers)? In addition to these issues, we have the particulars of our
situations in rural and remote communities:
Funders often have an inherent bias about the quality of our work before they
see it, partially because we are rural and partially because we are also
community based and their understanding of those things does not actually
include our context and reality. They do not understand until they see and

Entretiens au sujet de l’indemnisation
Les artistes peuvent avoir le privilège de trouver satisfaction et grande
joie dans leur travail, mais la réalité ne s’arrête pas là. C'est un sujet
extrêmement important, très émotif et excessivement complexe: quoi, quand et
comment les artistes sont-ils payés? Croyez-vous que lier l'art à un chèque
de paie rabaisse les talents de ceux qui créent pour d'autres raisons? Ou
êtes-vous d'accord qu'il est complètement absurde de s'attendre à ce que les
artistes fassent don de leur temps et de leurs efforts (les avocats sont-ils
invités à donner des règlements de divorce à des collecteurs de fonds
communautaires)? De plus, nous sommes confrontés à d'autres problèmes
propres aux collectivités rurales et éloignées.
Les bailleurs de fonds ont souvent un préjugé inhérent à la qualité de notre
travail avant de le voir, en partie parce que nous sommes ruraux et en partie
parce que nous avons une orientation communautaire alors que leur
compréhension de ces choses ne tient pas compte de notre contexte et de notre
réalité. Ils ne comprennent pas jusqu'à ce qu'ils voient et expérimentent de
façon personnelle et, malheureusement, ils ne se rendent pas si loin la

Across rural Ontario, the burgeoning sighs of sadness are almost palpable
as yet another ‘FOR SALE’ sign goes up on the church front lawn, or when
that notice goes into the newspaper: elementary school up for public
purchase. Our beautiful buildings, once the life forces of our communities,
are slowly being lost. Yet there is hope; successful ‘rescue missions’,
often spear-headed by local arts organizations, have resulted in the
conversion of these 'almost-lost' buildings to unique and vital cultural
gathering spaces, breathing new life into communities. Join Kendra and
Laura to hear about how you can inspire and mobilize your community to do
the same.
Des espaces culturels dans des endroits inattendus
Dans les régions rurales de l'Ontario, on peut ressentir les soupirs de
tristesse alors qu'un autre panneau «À VENDRE» apparaît sur la pelouse d’une
église, ou lorsque cet avis est publié dans le journal: école élémentaire en
vente publique. Nos beaux bâtiments, autrefois les forces vitales de nos
communautés, disparaissent peu à peu. Pourtant, il y a de l'espoir. des
«missions de sauvetage», souvent menées par des organisations artistiques
locales, ont abouti à la conversion de ces bâtiments «presque perdus» en
lieux de rassemblement culturels uniques et vitaux, insufflant une nouvelle

Drawing on their experience performing extensively in rural contexts, David,
with Heidi and Lynda of Sunsdrum, will explore, through slides and
performance featuring both Inuit traditional and contemporary music, lessons
they have learned about collaboration and reconciliation, and what it means
to be Northern.

A panel discussion offering a rare opportunity to hear from two individuals,
equally sagacious, amiable, and passionate about the performing arts, yet
each offering a unique perspective, about sustainable models (wait, did we
just say ‘sustainable’ in reference to performing arts in rural communities?
There’s a point of discussion!) of successful community engagement 'beyond
the performance' in rural and remote communities. Paul McLaren of Chat Noir
Coffee Books in New Liskeard will also be on site to talk about how Chat
Noir hosts coffee houses and other outreach events in conjunction with
performing arts activities in the region. This workshop will be held at

personnes, également perspicaces, aimables et passionnées par les arts de la
scène, offrant chacun une perspective unique sur les modèles durables
(attendez, avons-nous simplement dit «durable» en référence aux arts de la
scène dans les collectivités rurales, il y a un point de discussion!) d'un
engagement communautaire réussi «au-delà du rendement» dans les
collectivités rurales et éloignées. Paul McLaren de Chat Noir Coffee Books à
New Liskeard sera également sur place pour parler de la façon dont son
établissement accueille divers événements de sensibilisation en conjonction
avec des activités artistiques dans la région. Cet atelier aura lieu au Chat
