PROGRAMME PROGRAMME - France in ...

Preamble
by François Grosjean, Artistic Director of the Festival

The Francophonies of Pondicherry have the
ambition to build in Pondicherry, in partnership with
the Francophonies in Limousin, a place where the
Francophonie meets India.
The ecosystem inwhichwe live todayis a globalspace. The familytree that determines
us is no longer only vertical, the same country, the same region, the same village,
it is horizontal and is defined by a set of cultural practices, appetences, references,
languages that imprints on other cultures. We eat other cuisines, listen to other
music than that of our mother, grandmother, father, grandfather. Francophonie
is that mental space in which the individual can invent a collective space.

The avatars of the French language are the expression and reality of this need
for otherness, translation, bilingualism, language creation, creolization, accents,
intonation. This space of French-speaking languages becomes a tool to
understand and share our differences. Jawaharlal Nehru, evoking the Territory
of Pondicherry, spoke of a window open on France. The ambition of this Festival
is to open it to the French-speaking world, and through it, to the whole of India.

The French heritage of Pondicherry, particularly its urban heritage, but also
a certain French «art de vivre» and the importance of the French language,
are undeniably assets for this Territory/city, especially from the point of view
of the influx of tourists. The organization of a festival of the French-speaking
communities, thanks to a cultural diffusion of quality, makes it possible to affirm
the place occupied by Pondicherry for the French-speaking community in India.

The pilot edition organized from 21 to 25 March 2019 showed, despite its modesty,
that it could channel these multiple energies and give meaning, through the
construction of a common event associating five venues, five shows and the
public space, a diversity of artistic forms and reach a large, diverse audience,
moving from one place to another and sharing the simple joy of being together.

It is therefore a question of building in Pondicherry, in partnership with the
Francophonies in Limousin, a place where the Francophonie meets India.
