We wish to acknowledge all of the wonderful partners
and believers who made DOWNTOWN DANCES possible.
First and foremost, Allen and Karen Kaeja whose amazing work with Porch View Dances inspired
us to imagine DOWNTOWN DANCES was possible. As co-creators their years of experience,
passion, creative capacity, humour and commitment to artistic practice and process has been a joy
and inspiration. We are honoured to have the opportunity to have them in residence and to work
with them.

We are thrilled to work with our other collaborators in this venture along with The

Our volunteers include staff, employees of downtown, parents and friends who
have all come together to fill in and fine tune the many details and logistics of the
event day. We thank-you for your commitment of time and energy in ensuring a
successful event.

August 23rd 11AM-2PM, Moncton N.B Co-created and presented by Atlantic Ballet Atlantique Canada and Kaeja d’Dance BRINGING OUR COMMUNITY TOGETHER TO CELEBRATE OUR COMMUNITY DOWNTOWN Following last years hugely successful event with 150 employees and 30 business plus our Mayors dancing – Downtown dances is back in 2018! Atlantic Ballet Atlantique Canada is undertaking an artistic intervention to celebrate our community in a unique and inspiring downtown dance event. We are hosting award winning choreographers Allen and Karen Kaeja of Kaeja d’Dance of Toronto, who have worked in neighborhoods - choreographing “real people dancing in real spaces” to tell the stories of where people live every day. CREATIVITY, COMMUNITY and BUSINESS COLLIDE IN DOWNTOWN DANCES We are partnering with the City of Moncton and Downtown Moncton Inc. and our downtown businesses in a process that will bring our community together in a completely new way through dance. Citizens from local businesses and organizations collaborate with professional artists in order to create and perform dances on sidewalks, storefronts and gathering spaces. Downtown Dances is designed to celebrate the stories and spirit of local businesses, employees and our community. DOWNTOWN DANCES IS A GREAT WAY TO HAVE OUR BUSINESSES AND EMPLOYEES DEMONSTRATING COMMUNITY LEADERSHIP IN BUILDING AND SUPPORTING A HEALTHY ACTIVE CITY. Real people working in real businesses as well as our City Council are participating in dancing and celebrating our community to music in five locations on Main Street. Employees will be choreographed by professional choreographers, Allen & Karen Kaeja, Igor Dobrovolskiy, Yuliia Shevchenko and Eldiyar Daniyarov. Main Street will be blocked off for the event. A crowd of downtown workers and community members will proceed through the Downtown led by two vibrant hosts who will explain the businesses and insert stories of our development as a City. LEADING A COMMUNITY DIALOGUE The walk ends in the beautiful Riverfront Park with a light lunch and an open dialogue session on re-imaging our community. Results will be compiled and shared with the City of Moncton, Downtown Moncton Inc. and other stakeholders. 5

Le Ballet Atlantique du Canada entreprend une intervention artistique pour célébrer notre
communauté avec un événement unique et inspirant au centre-ville. Nous accueillons les
chorégraphes primés Allen and Karen Kaeja de Kaeja d’Dance, de Toronto, qui ont œuvré dans

sur les trottoirs, vitrines et lieux de rencontres. Danses au centre-ville est créé pour célébrer
l’histoire et l’esprit des entreprises et employées de notre communauté.ais lieux – afin de
raconter ce qui arrive dans les endroits où des gens vivent tous les jours.
DANSES AU CENTRE-VILLE EST UNE BELLE MANIÈRE DE PROMOUVOIR LE
LEADERSHIP D’ENTREPRISE EN SOUTENANT UNE VILLE SAINE ET ACTIVE.
De vraies personnes qui travaillent dans de vrais établissements d’affaires ainsi que nos
conseillers municipaux seront les participants d’une danse racontant notre centre-ville en
musique, successivement dans cinq lieux sur la rue Main.
Les chorégraphes professionnels Allen Kaeja, Karen Kaeja, Igor Dobrovolskiy, Yuliia
Shevchenko et Eldiyar Daniyarov enseigneront une chorégraphie aux employés.
La rue Main sera fermée à la circulation pendant le déroulement de la manifestation.
Une foule de gens de notre communauté, dont ceux et celles qui travaillent au centre-ville, se
déplaceront à travers le centre-ville, en compagnie de deux animateurs dynamiques qui
présen- teront les établissements d’affaires en intégrant des histoires sur le développement
de notre ville.
ANIMER UN DIALOGUE COMMUNAUTAIRE
La promenade se termine au magnifique parc riverain, et un dîner au bord de la rive permettra
d’échanger sur la vision de notre futur centre-ville. Les résultats seront transmis à la Ville de
Moncton, Moncton Centre-Ville inc. et d’autres parties prenantes.

Note: A flood of people in white is like a torrential rainstorm – intense and beautiful.
Premiered in Toronto in 2015, the Wedding Brigade weaves its way through the
oncoming crowd, adapting to the constant ebb and flow as a metaphor for the
fluidity, joys and struggles that we embrace within ourselves and in relationships.

Founded by CEO, Susan Chalmers-Gauvin and Artistic Director Igor Dobrovolskiy
in 2001, Atlantic Ballet Atlantique Canada is an international award winning creation
based Canadian Ballet Company with a focus on new works, collaboration and
inventive creative practices that interface with community and the public in new

10About Kaeja d’Dance, Toronto Ontario
One of Canada’s longest standing contemporary dance companies, Kaeja d’Dance’s husband and
wife duo collide like liquid fusion in the creative process. At the heart of the Company are Karen
and Allen Kaeja, creating award-winning performances, site-specific works, acclaimed dance films
and educational outreach programs since 1991. They have over 200 original works and numerous
awards including the CDA “I Love Dance” Community Award, Clifford E. Lee, Bonnie Bird (UK)
and Paul D. Fleck Fellowship for Innovation. They are pioneers in Dance on Screen, with over 20
acclaimed dance films, aired in over 400 festivals worldwide plus Bravo!, CBC, Wisconsin Public
Television, the Jewish Museum, Museum of Modern Art (New York) and Yad Vashem (Israel).
Widely sought as teachers of Kaeja Elevations and Improvisation, they
have taught more than 40,000 learners. The first teachers of Contact Dance at the National Ballet

IGOR DOBROVOLSKIY
Co-Founder and Artistic Director of Atlantic Ballet Atlantique Canada,
Igor Dobrovolskiy is an award winning creator, teacher, mentor and one
of Canada’s most prolific choreographers-having created 15 full length
over 50 short works in 17 years. His creative work catapulted the
Company he Co-Founded in 2001, Atlantic Ballet Atlantique,
on to the international stage. Beginning is 2006 Dobrovolskiy’s works
created for the company have toured regularly through-out Europe-
Belgium, Switzerland, France and Germany and the United States
including New York. He is recipient of the Lieutenant Governor’s Award
for High Achievement in the Performing Arts, The Muriel McQueen
Fergusson Award and the RBC Top 25 Canadian Immigrants Award.
Cofondateur et directeur artistique du Ballet Atlantique du Canada, Igor Dobrovolskiy est

KAREN KAEJA
Karen Kaeja is Co-Artistic Director of Kaeja d’Dance with Allen Kaeja.
A multi-award winner for innovation, choreography and performance,
including the CDA “I Love Dance” Community Award for her invention
of Porch View Dances, 4 Dora nominations with one Dora award for her
work, Crave, and a finalist for the Muriel Sherrin Award, Karen has been
recognized internationally with commissions and presented by festivals
and performance series worldwide. Celebrated as one of this country’s
top ten dance artists (NOW Magazine and Toronto Life), she teaches at
conferences, festivals and universities across North America. A Paul
D. Fleck recipient in Banff, Karen was the first dance artist in residence
for both the Guelph Dance Festival and Memorial University / DanceNL.
She is also Co-AD of Cloud 9. Kaeja.org

13ALLEN KAEJA
Allen Kaeja is an award winning Choreographer and Dance Film
Director, who has created over 160 stage works and Choreographed
/ Directed 28 films. Allen is Co-Artistic Director of Kaeja d’Dance
with his wife Karen Kaeja. His stage and film works have been
presented around the world and he has received dozens of national
and international commissions. Allen has co-developed many
community oriented, site-specific and audience interactive
engagement performance strategies with Karen Kaeja over the past
27 years. Allen and Karen just completed touring the world and Allen
recently completed two new Dance Films for Xtraordinary TO
Dances.
Allen Kaeja est un chorégraphe de renom et un réalisateur primé de films de danse. Il a créé

YULIIA SHEVCHENKO
Yuliia Shevchenko was born in Kiev, Ukraine. After graduation, she
joined the State Theatre of Opera and Ballet for Children and Youth
in Kiev. Yullia worked throughout Europe as a professional ballet
dancer and in 2002 she joined the Atlantic Ballet Atlantique
Canada. Following her extensive professional ballet career, Yuliia
has dedicated her time to teaching and youth development.
She has been a ballet teacher and choreographer at ballet schools
and instructor and artistic consultant
for rhythmic gymnastics groups in Europe and Canada. She is
currently the Principal of the Ballet / Dance Division for Atlantic
Ballet's School of Atlantic Ballet Atlantique Canada.
Yuliia Shevchenko est née à Kiev en Ukraine après avoir obtenu son diplôme, elle s’est jointe
au Théâtre d’opéra et de ballet pour les enfants et les jeunes à Kiev.Yullia worked a travaillé
dans toute l’Europe comme danseuse de ballet professionnelle. En 2002, elle s’est jointe au
Ballet-théâtre atlantique du Canada. Après une impressionnante carrière de danseuse de ballet
professionnelle, Yuliia a choisi de se consacrer à l’enseignement et au développement des
jeunes. Elle a été instructrice de ballet et chorégraphe dans des écoles de ballet et instructrice
et consultante artistique pour des groupes de gymnastique rythmique en Europe et au Canada.
Elle est présentement la directrice du programme de ballet / danse pour le Centre des arts et
de l’éducation du Ballet-théâtre atlantique du Canada.
14ELDIYAR DANIYAROV
Eldiyar joined Atlantic Ballet Atlantique Canada in 2012. Prior to
coming to Canada he was dancing as a soloist with the prestigious
Eifman Ballet of St Petersburg. He trained and graduated from the
esteemed Kazakh National Academy of Arts and went on as a
principal dancer with the National Academic Ballet of the Republic
of Kazakhstan, the Center of Contemporary Dance and the Crown
of Russian Ballet Moscow. Eldiyar also has a degree in Teaching
and Choreography from the National Academy of Art in Almaty,
Kazakhstan.
Eldiyar est entré au Ballet atlantique du Canada en 2012. Avant sa venue au Canada il dansait
les premiers rôles au prestigieux Eifman Ballet Théâtre de Saint-Pétersbourg, en Russie. Il a
reçu sa formation de l'estimée Académie Nationale d'Arts du Kazakhstan et a poursuivi à titre
de premier danseur au Centre de danse contemporaine du Ballet national de la république du
Kazakhstan, le Center of Contemporary Dance et a tenu des premiers rôles au sein du Ballet
de Moscou.
OLGA PETITEAU
Choreographic Assistant and Performer / Assistante au chorégraphe et interprète
Olga Petitteau trained at the Académie américaine de danse de
Paris in France. In 2007, she was a finalist at the Youth America
Grand Prix competition in New York. She joined Ballet Cymru in
2009, where she performed on national and international tours. She
has also been involved in the creation and inception of many
neoclassical and contemporary pieces. Olga danced with Vienna
Festival Ballet for one season in 2012 and joined Les Ballets
classiques de Paris for their
international tour. She brilliantly interpreted the role of Edith Piaf in
Atlantic Ballet Atlantique Canada’s original production of PIAF.
Olga Petiteau a été formée à l’Académie américaine de danse de Paris. En 2007, elle était
finaliste à la compétition Youth America Grand Prix à New York, puis elle s’est jointe au Ballet
Cymru où elle s’est produite lors de tournées nationales et internationales. Elle a aussi
participé à la création et au début de nombreuses pièces néo-classiques et contemporaines.
Olga a fait partie de l’équipe du ballet Vienna Festival et des Ballets classiques de Paris en
2012 pour leur tournée internationale. Elle a interprété avec brio le rôle d’Édith Piaf dans la
production originale PIAF du Ballet-théâtre atlantique du Canada.

Choreographic Assistant and Performer / Assistante au chorégraphe et interprète
Born in Montreal, Stéphanie Audet began her training at
l’École supérieure de Ballet du Québec. During her training,
Stéphanie had the chance to perform the Balanchine
repertory, as well as Swan Lake. She has also been involved
in many contemporary new works. In the Company’s original
production of PIAF by Igor Dobrovolskiy, she danced the part
of Simone “Mômone” Berteaut. Stéphanie has also
performed in GHOSTS OF VIOLENCE and PHANTOM OF
THE OPERA with Atlantic
Ballet Atlantique Canada.
Née à Montréal, Stéphanie Audet a commencé sa formation à l’École supérieure de Ballet
du Québec. Lors de sa formation, Stéphanie a eu la chance d’interpréter le répertoire de
Balanchine ainsi que Le lac du cygne. Elle a aussi participé à de nombreuses oeuvres

DE VIOLENCE et FANTÔME DE L’OPÉRA avec le Ballet atlantique du Canada.
