L’artiste portugaise Bela Silva fait naître ses
formes sculpturales en céramique de ses dessins
qui reflètent à la fois sa personnalité et ses élans
d’expression baroque.

Bela Silva is born in Lisbon, Portugal, and studied at both
the Porto and the Lisbon Fine Arts Schools in Portugal;
ArCo, Lisbon; Norwich Fine Arts in the UK; School of The
Art Institute of Chicago in the United States. She currently
lives between Lisbon and Brussels, Belgium.
Among her shows: Chicago’s Ann Nathan Gallery and
Rhona Hoffman Gallery; Lisbon’s Museu do Azulejo (Tile
Museum), Museu Anastácio Gonçalves in Lisbon, Palácio
da Ajuda, and Fundação Ricardo Espírito Santo; and also
shows in China and in Japan. She has participated in group
shows of tile art in Brazil, Spain, France; ran ceramics
workshops in Japan and Morocco; and been awarded
residencies at Kohler, Wisconsin, USA, and at Fabrica
Bordalo Pinheiro, Caldas da Rainha, Portugal.
She has created several public art pieces, namely tile panels
for the Alvalade subway station in Lisbon; panels for the
Sakai Cultural Center’s gardens in Japan; and panels for
the João de Deus School in the Azores Islands. She created
12 large pieces in 2017 for the gardens of the museum
of Ancient Art as well as exhibited her work that same
year at the museum of Orient in Lisbon, mixed with the
collections.
Spazio Nobile has represented Bela Silva since 2017.
Among her shows at the gallery and on fairs: Season
X-Land/Scapes, Collectible Design Fair in Brussels,
Art Brussels in duo show with Finnish Kustaa Saksi,
Révélations Biennial at Grand Palais, Paris, Unique Design
Shanghai at Tank, West Bund begin Nov 2019. Upcoming
solo show at the gallery in March 2020.

Après son exposition au Musée de l’Orient de Lisbonne sous le commissariat de Catarina
Pombo Nabais au printemps dernier, Bela Silva ouvre les portes de son atelier à Bruxelles en
étroite collaboration avec la galerie Spazio Nobile et à l’occasion du lancement de la présente
édition de ce magazine. Au reflet des esthétiques asiatiques contemporaines, Bela Silva opère
une synthèse tant dans le domaine des beaux-arts que des arts appliqués. Emblématique de
cette quête de dialogue interculturel entre l’Orient et l’Occident, la créatrice désoriente le
regard vers des formes qui naissent telles des fantasmagories sur papier et dans l’argile. Avec
une parfaite maîtrise, ses sculptures aux glaçages inédits et ses dessins hautement colorés
emplissent l’espace de splendeur et de légèreté, avec humour et tendresse, extravagants et
parfois érotiques ; ils dépassent à proprement dit les frontières de l’Occident, confrontant
l’académisme aux fastes de la nature, aux attraits pour le japonisme et la chinoiserie.
Following her exhibition last spring at the Museum of the Orient in Lisbon under the aegis of
Catarina Pombo Nabais, Bela Silva has decided to open the doors of her studio in Brussels as part
of a close collaboration with Spazio Nobile Gallery. She will do so for the launch of the current issue
of this magazine. With her pieces that reflect contemporary Asian aesthetics, Bela Silva works in
both the fine and applied arts. Silva’s pieces are emblematic of the quest for intercultural dialogue
between the East and West and she excels at disorienting viewers with her phantasmagorical
shapes, both on paper and in clay. Her perfect mastery of her fields has led her to make colourful
drawings and sculptures with never-before-seen glazing that create an ambiance of splendour
and light, humour and tenderness, extravagance and sometimes eroticism. Her work goes beyond
the boundaries of the West and it forces academia to confront the grandeur of nature and the
attractions of Japonisme and Chinoiserie.

TLmag: Contemporary Asian aesthetics is
the central theme for this issue. How and
why does this topic speak to you? I am
thinking specifically of your ceramic pan-
els for the Sakai Cultural Center in Japan.
B.S.: Art is central to many Asian cultures
and there are many links between Portugal
and Asia. They come from the time of
maritime exploration and trading between
continents. I am constantly drawn to the
richness of Eastern elements, both in the
fine arts and decorative arts. I often un-
consciously include them in my own work.
TLmag: The major artistic movements
that began in the 16th century—namely,
Chinoiserie and Japonisme—still continue
to influence western design. Do you con-
sider yourself a part of that creative wave
that constantly enriches the world through
intercultural dialogues?
B.S.: For me, they are an eternal source
of inspiration and discovery. The rich-
ness and sophistication of Asian traditions
never fails to astonish and motivate me. I
often rediscover elegant and decorative
elements that I have previously worked
on. That encourages me to go further in
my artistic explorations to find new, unex-
plored territories.

90 ART ON PAPER - DESSIN SCULPTURE 91 ART ON PAPER - DESSIN SCULPTUREBy opening Spazio Nobile in April 2016, in the dynamic and cosmopolitan Ixelles neighbourhood of Brussels (Belgium), Lise Coirier and Gian Giuseppe Simeone have united their passions for design and art history, initiating a dialogue between contemporary applied arts, design and photography. Commissioning installations that are both experimental and artistic, with a particular sensibility to everything connected to nature and minerality, the gallery organises four to five exhibits each year, dedicated to both rising and established talents.
