STRATEGIC ALLIANCES: THE EXAMINATIO N OF
INTERNATIONAL JOINT SPORT EVENT BIDDING
Jinsu Byun, Dana Ellis, Becca Leopkey. In: European sport
management quarterly, Ahead of print, 13 May 2020, pp. 1-20.
The guidance of Agenda 2020 now allow for hosting events in multiple
cities, regions, or countries. These changes have increased support for
joint bidding in the Olympic Games and resulted in the formation of two
joint bids for the 2026 Winter Olympics (i.e. Milano-Cortina and
Stockholm-Åre) with Milano-Cortina ultimately chosen to become the first
official Olympic co-hosts. Given the increased attention on joint sport
event bids this study examines joint bidding alliances as organizational
strategies. A model illustrating the legitimation process of joint bids in
sporting events and implications of this study is suggested.

PUBLIC MEG A PROJECTS: HOSTING THE O LYMPIC
GAMES
Tobias Streicher, Sascha L. Schmidt, Dominik Schreyer. In:
Technological forecasting and social change, vol. 158,
September 2020, 120158.
One frequent criticism of affective forecasting research is that it studies
extreme target events that the public majority clearly perceives as either
negative or positive, whereas in reality an event may also be neutral.
The authors therefore choose to focus on the public mega-project of
hosting the Olympic Games, not only because the event is well known
across all countries surveyed, but also because it evokes a broad range
of feelings from excitement to apathy to fierce rejection. To address this
concern, the authors apply advanced invariance measurement methods
to examines the formation and interplay of cognitive versus affective
decision components in the context of these mega-projects, using
population-representative survey data from 11 European countries and
the US.

NOLYMPICS: TO KYO 2020/1 IN DER KRITIK
Steffi Richter...
In diesem
„Fukushima“- Japan Stellung beziehen. Einige von ihnen agieren selbst
in Protest-Bewegungen, die mit „NOlympics“-Gruppen in anderen Teilen
der Welt ein transnationales Aktionsnetzwerk bilden. Die Beiträge
verschränken wissenschaftliche Spezialdiskurse u.a. aus
Jahrhundert typischen
„Katastrophen- und Feier-Kapitalismus“, der für soziale Exklusion
ebenso steht wie für Gefährdungen der Demokratie.

Peter Kuling. In: Yana Meerzon, David Dean, Daniel McNeil.
Migration and stereotypes in performance and culture, Palgrave
Macmillan, 2020, pp. 179-193.
This research explores the multiple levels of contemporary migration
narratives within professional athletic competition by focusing on case
studies emerging from the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Summer Olympic
Games. Kuling considers how the creation of a nation state for refugees
at the Rio Games became part of the theatre within the opening
ceremonies using performance aesthetics of migration to celebrate the
global human spirit.

In this chapter, the authors draw on feminist materialism to reveal a
complex narrative of the polluted waters of the Rio 2016 Olympic and
Paralympic Games. They develop insights from feminist new
materialisms to analyze unsustainable practices experienced and
discussed in regards to mega sporting events, particularly in relationship
to the water pollution at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games.

Bram Constandt, Annick Willem. In: Leisure sciences: an

Postponing the Tokyo 2020 Olympics due to the global outbreak of
COVID-19 marks a unique moment in the history of the Olympic
Movement. Although only the future can tell exactly, the Antwerp 1920
Olympics can offer certain historical insights. Exactly 100 years ago, the
Antwerp Olympic Games were the first Olympics organized after World
War I and the Spanish flu pandemic. Their value in terms of rising the
Olympic Movement from its ashes is vital. Profoundly promoting its
identity, newly introduced Olympic symbols then helped avoiding the
collapse of the Olympic Movement. Acknowledged as the “Games
reborn”, the Antwerp 1920 Olympics were strongly about recovery,
helping to heal a wounded society. How could Tokyo 2020 fulfill the
same role?

OLYMPIC MO VEMENT
Volker Kluge. In: Journal of Olympic history, vol. 28, no. 2, 2020,
pp. 6-19.
On the occasion of their 100th anniversary, this article focuses on the
1920 Antwerp Olympic Games. When the 1916 Berlin Games were
cancelled following the Great War, few people imagined that the next
Olympic Games would be held in 1920, just two years after the
armistice. It was almost a miracle that Belgium, one of the nations that
suffered the most, agreed to be the host. But the 1920 Games in
Antwerp have an extra resonance in 2020, as they were also
overshadowed by a pandemic that claims more victims than the First
World War. And still, the Games continued.

the foundation of the whole visual design system, thus the importance of
color scheme is self-evident. This paper discusses the main color
schemes of the Olympic Summer Games and the Olympic Winter
Games during 1980–2020 through analyzing the reasons of color
selection, color image scales, word image scales, and the properties of
hue, blackness and chromaticness based on the natural color system

The Olympic Games is the largest and largest sports event in the world,
which is regarded as an important opportunity for host countries or host
cities to display or reshape the image of the country. With the continuous
improvement of China’s international status and the integration of
Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei, the hosting of the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics is
worth studying in how to build Beijing’s international image. This paper
uses the STA model to compare and analyze the successful hosting of
the 2008 Olympic Games and the 2022 Winter Olympics from the
perspective of the Proximization theory proposed by foreign scholar
professor Piotr Cap, and proposes corresponding measures for the
construction and dissemination of Beijing’s international image.

Charles Mountifield, Stirling Sharpe. In: Journal of global sport

This paper highlights contrasting viewpoints on the perceived value that
the Olympic Games make to world peace efforts through the lens of the
2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, South Korea. News articles
(n = 114) from a variety of international periodicals were reviewed and
thematically analyzed with key nascent tropes – cynicism of the potential
for peace; scorn of the role of sport in peace processes; and high-level
political meddling in sport – pointing to a consensus that hosting of the
Games would have little impact on the political landscape in the Korean
peninsula.

Doo Jae Park… [et al.]. In: Sociology of sport journal, Ahead of

This cultural-interpretive essay offers critical commentary on
Koreanness, racial ideology, hegemonic racial power, and racialized
cultural taste with the aim of interpreting the sport–music nexus by
examining a case of the interface between music and sport: The authors
focus on the case of the Olympic ice dance that the South Korean team
performed for the Korean traditional folk song Arirang at the 2018
PyeongChang Olympic Winter Games. The authors argue that music
and sport can be understood as a semiological system that shapes non-
Whites’ ideological belief system. In addition, this essay engages with a
discussion of cultural classification that often racializes skaters of color
as the aforementioned are informed by Orientalism.

WINTER O LYMPICS

The main aim of this study is to investigate how to deliver a sustainable
legacy from the PyeongChang 2018 Winter Olympic Games. The
research sets forth to look into the case of the 2018 Olympics compared
to SMEs held in other states. The overall goal of this research is to find
the ideal model for the sustainable legacy, which could be adopted after
hosting the SME in Korea. The three research questions of the study
are: 1) What legacy strategies did the two previous Olympics in
Vancouver and London use to develop sustainability?; 2) What are the
discrepancies in the plan for a sustainable legacy of the PyeongChang
Olympics between the bid proposal and actual realisation? Why? and 3)
What are the factors to consider for sustainable post-SME legacy in
Korea?

One of intangible legacies mega events have is the acquisition and

INTANG IBLE OLYMPIC LEG ACIES: CONCEPT,
METHO D AND MEASUREMENT
Vassil Girginov & Holger Preuss. Brunel University, 2019. - 93 p.
Final report for the IOC Olympic Studies Centre Advanced
Olympic Research Grant Programme 2018/2019 Award.
This study addressed the conceptualization and measuring of intangible
Olympic legacy for National Sport Federations (NSF). Using a
longitudinal case study approach, from 2007 to 2019, the project
examined the social interactions, resource exchange and structural
changes taking place within NSF’s portfolio of activities around the 2012
London Olympic and Paralympic Games. It is argued that intangible
legacy is not a fixed property of an NSF, but one that evolves over the
course of planning, delivering and remembering the Games. Intangible
legacy becomes possible because of the interactions an NSF gets
involved with and the ultimate point of which is the creation of public
value as seen by the NSF. Public value cannot exist without human
appraisal and only comes into being at the experience and perception
levels. NSF perceive public value because they can positively relate own
Games experiences to their basic needs and the functioning of their
organization, members and the sport as a whole. Through a synthesis of
extant literature and longitudinal empirical findings, the project
developed a methodology for measuring intangible Olympic legacy for
NSF. This has never been achieved before and can greatly assist the
new International Olympic Committee legacy strategy.

THE MODERN O LYMPICS
William Douglas Almeida, Katia Rubio. In: International sports
studies, vol. 40, no. 2, 2018, pp. 34-46.
The modern Olympic Games were created in the late nineteenth century,
in a context in which various entities with an internationalist character
were emerging. From the beginning, there was a concern that the event
should receive participants from different countries, bringing together the
best competitors in the world. In addition to technological advances and
the media, the building of a great competition bringing together various
sports disciplines and participants from all corners of the globe was only
possible thanks to diplomatic agreements. It was necessary for the initial
concept to undergo several adjustments. For example the very
standardization of the rules of the disputes was a problem faced in the
early modern Olympics. This paper demonstrates how during this early
phase of the modern Olympic Games, the Olympic Movement had to
undergo a continuous process of adjustments, which enabled its
systematic growth. The support for this hypothesis is found in the
analysis of texts by Baron Pierre de Coubertin, texts by other authors
who study Olympism, and also the search of historic contextualization.

In December 2016, the General Assembly of the DOSB (German
Olympic Sports Confederation) decided to restructure the German elite
sport system and its funding. Among representatives of sports
organizations, these aspired structural reforms were meant to be without
any alternative to guarantee future success and international
competitiveness at Olympic and Paralympic Games. The general need
for the objective and the appropriateness of the chosen content
measures (e.g., the efficiency of the potential analysis system [PotAS])
will be confirmed by the future performance of German athletes.
However, the debate misses a profound justification of the purposes for
which the means (measures of reform) are intended to serve. This article
intends to fill the gap by explicating the values of elite sport according to
its social and individual functions.

Kenya has excelled in international sports, especially in middle and
distance events. To date, Kenya has won 104 medals at the Olympic
Games with 97 (93.27%) being in track and field and the remaining 07
(6.73%) from boxing. This sustained dominance continues in the wake of
many Kenyan athletes changing their national allegiance to run for other
countries where they have even earned medals at the Olympic Games.
Thus, Kenya needs to diversify more in track and field events to broaden
the scope of competition to sustain and solidify the status of being a
powerhouse in track and field.

RACIAL OLYMPIC CO MMITTEE IN EXILE, 1966–1970
Matthew P. Llewellyn, Toby C. Rider. In: South African historical
journal, Ahead of print, 27 July 2020.
In July 1966, the South African Non-Racial Olympic Committee
(SANROC) re-emerged in exile in London. The arrival of Dennis Brutus,
the coloured Rhodesian-born activist, poet, and educator, into the British
capital provided the stimulus to renew calls for the exclusion of apartheid
South Africa from international sport. In the years 1966–1970 that
marked Brutus’s exile in Britain, SANROC elevated apartheid sport to
the world’s attention. As this paper contends, SANROC’s success in
discouraging foreign contact and competition with racialist sporting
organisations, teams, or individuals from South Africa rested largely on
Brutus’s ability to position himself at the nexus of an emergent human
rights discourse that dominated the agendas of state institutions and
international organisations throughout the 1960s.

Ying Chiang, Tzu-hsuan Chen. In: International review for the
sociology of sport, Ahead of print, 8 June 2020, pp. 1-20.
The Chinese Civil War split the Chinese into two politically conflicted
states from 1949. The People’s Republic of China and Republic of China
both claimed to be the legitimate representative of China in the
international community. “Chinese Taipei” has become the name of
Republic of China in the international sport field and almost every
international organization since 1981, after Kuomintang (The Chinese
Nationalist Party) refused to play under the provincial name “Taiwan,”
which was suggested by the International Olympic Committee in the
1960s. However, the relationships between Taiwan and China and the
nationalistic discourses have changed drastically in Taiwan in the past
40 years. In 2018, the “2020 Tokyo Olympics Taiwan name rectification
referendum” was launched. It requested to rectify the current “Chinese
Taipei” to “Taiwan”. This paper aims to build a contextualized and
historical understanding of this interrelation of sport and nationalism in
Taiwan via this name game.

NATIONALISM IN INTERNATIO NAL POLITICS
Catherine Kai-Ping Lin. Academica Press, 2019, 305 p.
In this exciting new book, Taiwanese scholar Catherine Kai-Ping Lin
examines Taiwan’s diplomatic history since the 1970s through the lens
of sports in the development of nationalism in foreign relations. Since
1971, when Taiwan lost its United Nations seat to the communist
People’s Republic of China, the country has gradually shifted its foreign
policy. Originally following its “One-China policy” -- conquering the
mainland and reunifying China, -- Taiwan has more recently promoted its
status as an independent country amid an international atmosphere in
which it does not enjoy diplomatic recognition. Presenting a highly
original chronological case study of the role of sports in the making of
Taiwan’s foreign policy, Lin aims to enrich our understanding of Taiwan’s
unique position in the world by arguing that nationalist forces within the
Taiwanese government – all the way up to its top leadership — used
athletic competition to promote Taiwanese nationalism and nationhood.
