1 Description terra-terre is an international encounter project in the form of binomials. Nine artists and two curators from Switzerland and Italy meet each other in a game of rapprochement that lasts several months. First anonymously via an intermediary platform, then virtually in direct contact online and finally physically in mutual encounters after Covid 19. The resulting documented collaboration and the binomial projects will be exhibited in mid 2022 in Switzerland and Italy. 2 The Form My art is Social Sculpture, which pursues the goal of having a formative influence on society. My art concept includes human action and is also aimed at structuring and shaping society. It is no longer limited to the materially tangible artefact. The exchange with others and with the other is always an important element of my work. As in my last projects Inclusion (2016), Pompon Project (2017), W Sant'Agata (2018) or Gib mir Deine Brust, (2019), this art intervention terra-terre (2020) is also a stimulus for encounters and a game with coincidences and unpredictable situations of human encounter.
2.1 Content and Implementation Since December 2019, eight artists, four from Catania and four from Fribourg have been working in this encounter project. From December until today, they have anonymously exchanged pictures and found each other in four binomial pairs. The division into binomials is based on a first virtual exchange of pictures (speed-dating) after which each artist anonymously gave an input about the upcoming exchange on my platform. The Covid 19 pandemic has put the project into question, as the distance and the different realities in Switzerland and Italy also had an influence on the exchange. Especially the economic crisis and the travel restrictions made us doubt the possibility of an exchange. At the same time, the national differences in dealing with the crisis also made us sit up and take notice and strengthened us in our project not to give up in the crisis. Differences and distance bring us closer. In this phase of the pandemic, it was important to all participants to carry on the common project as a bearer of hope and representative of a cultural future. We lifted the initial poetic fleetingness of anonymous cooperation to a more concrete level, and gave the project more confidence and momentum again. We have now announced the identities behind the binomials and since then the artists have been working on joint projects in digital exchange. In a later phase in October, the digital encounter will be intensified by encounter weeks, with the Swiss binomials coming to Italy and, depending on the current pandemic situation, the Italians coming to Switzerland months later. Each artist will take responsibility for his or her binomial on site. During this week, the artist binoms are free to choose the form in which they want to get involved with each other. In the role of the hub, I coordinate the exchange and work on the theme of the encounter in artistic form. At the end of the respective encounter week, the artists compile their weekly work and exhibit it in local institutions (art academy, art mediation in museums, etc.) within the framework of an art mediation exchange. Two curators, also linked as binoms, accompany the process on site and observe the artists in the working process. They are responsible for the discussions of the works within the framework of art education. Their observations and reflections accompany the entire process during and after the exchange weeks and are integrated into the publication. The works created as a result of the exchange will be published online during the project, as well as in a joint publication and in two solo exhibitions in Catania and in the canton of Fribourg.
2.2 Intent and Effect Entirely in the spirit of a culture of sharing and participation, as propagated by ruangrupa in view of Documenta 15, of trust in the community and responsibility for the other and the other, the project terra-terre is intended to facilitate and document encounters beyond the national, cultural and personal boundaries of the artists. We share here and there, near and far, what is most personal to us, namely our artistic work. Through cooperation and confrontation, we artists refine our perception, enable empathy for ourselves and others and break down prejudices and stereotypes. In this decelerated process, we raise current questions and take on the other's perspective in order to grow on both of us. Together we create a cultural hybrid, a dialogue, a dispute or whatever may grow out of the encounter. By documenting and discussing the process during and at the end of the encounter, we want to involve the public and show the audience what artists experience in a cultural exchange process. The role of the initiator is that of the cultural intersection. At home in both artistic and cultural circles in Switzerland and Sicily, she enables both artistic realities to engage in an efficient artistic exchange through her local networks of relationships and her transcultural competences.

ou : la rencontre de « l’autre », artistiquement
Le projet « Terra-Terre » est de ces aventures novatrices qui quittent les chemins battus pour
explorer des territoires artistiques différents et, surtout, différemment.
L’idée de Valeria Caflisch de procéder à des échanges entre deux groupes de quatre artistes
suisses de Fribourg et siciliens de Catane conduira en fait à de doubles échanges, et ce en
trois temps :
- En aout 2020, les artistes catanais seront hébergés à Fribourg par leurs paires. Ils
pourront donc échanger avec ceux-ci tout en dialoguant entre eux-mêmes. Après une
semaine, ils livreront de premiers résultats de leurs recherches artistiques, présentés
dans une exposition-laboratoire mise en place avec la collaboration des curateurs qui
accompagnent l’aventure.
- Dans un deuxième temps, en octobre 2020, les artistes fribourgeois, enrichis de
l’expérience des artistes catanais chez eux, se rendront à Catane pour se livrer eux -
aussi à cet exercice difficile de « la rencontre de l’autre », exercice qui se terminera
aussi avec une expo courte.
- Vers la fin de l’année, une fois les travaux de part et d’autre plus élaborés, un
catalogue sera réalisé pour accompagner deux expositions distinctes dans des lieux
publics à Catane et à Fribourg.
L’aventure, coordonnée de part en part de Valeria Caflisch, sera accompagnée par deux
curateurs spécialisés, l’un sicilien, l’autre suisse (le soussigné) qui mettront en place les expos
et réaliseront des textes critiques sur toute l’expérience pour le catalogue.
L’intérêt de cette démarche réside dans le fait que les artistes ne se déplacent pas
uniquement dans un lieu lointain pour s’y confronter à une culture étrangère comme ce fut le
cas pour les artistes voyageurs dès le 19ème siècle en Italie et les pays de l’Orient, artistes qui
rapportèrent des images d’autres cultures, mais les artistes du projet « terra-terre » y
rencontreront également des artistes professionnels qui les introduiront dans leur pays. Ils
pourront échanger avec eux et se nourrir aussi de leurs créations.
Gageons que leurs œuvres porteront la marque de toutes ces confrontations susceptibles de
renouveler leur langage. Or, c’est sans doute cela, la condition d’artiste : Se renouveler sans
cesse pour nous permettre à nous autres de voir le monde différemment sous l’impulsion de
leurs créations.

Ich finde diesen Austausch sehr stimulierend im Hinblick auf ein erklärendes Teilen dieses Arbeits-und Lebensortes mit anderen Künstlern und im Gegenzug ein tieferes Kennenlernen und Erklärtbekommen eines neuen Ortes, einer anderen Landschaft/Stadt und eines kulturellen Umfeldes. Sicht aus meinem Atelier Aussicht auf Neues, Anderes, Unerwartetes…

Motivation à participer au projet
Je suis très motivée à participer à ce projet pour l’aspect ECHANGES.
En effet, au fil de mes expériences, je me rends de plus en plus compte que le fait de
coopérer avec d’autres artistes, d’échanger les points de vue, de découvrir la culture de
l’autre, d’échanger avec lui sur sa manière de travailler, … tout cela est ESSENTIEL.
De plus, je suis une artiste ancrée dans la société ; j’alimente mon travail des rencontres
avec les gens.
Le projet Terra-Terre contient tous ces éléments nécessaires à mon travail, à savoir :
développer un projet avec
* des artistes d’ici que j’estime
* des artistes de Sicile qui seront une nouvelle ouverture
* le cadre de la vie et des villes de Fribourg et surtout de CataniaChristiane Hamacher Fribourg Catania Im Rahmen meiner prozesshaften künstlerischen Forschung möchte ich mich der Stadt Catania annähern. Der Blick auf das Fremde und die Neugier auf das Unbekannte im Austausch mit einer Künstler*in sollen mich die eigene Umgebung, meinen Arbeitsort, meinen gelebten Alltag und damit mein künstlerisches Handlungsfeld neu wahrnehmen lassen. Wechselwirkungen sollen daraus entstehen. Ich möchte in meiner Arbeit neue Verbindungen zwischen unterschiedlichem individuellem Erleben knüpfen: Das stellt sich so dar, ist einzigartig, klar abgrenzbar und in seiner Form geschlossen. Über Nähe, gemeinsame Interessen, Affinitäten, Vielförmigkeiten und über das, was wir teilen können, entstehen Plattformen für einen gemeinsamen Austausch über Erfahrungen, Gedanken und Verständnis für die Welt, in der wir leben. Gianluca Lombardo Il progetto terra-terre è più di un progetto espositivo qualsiasi: rappresenta una di quelle forme di ‘laboratorio progettuale-espositivo’ nei quali gli artisti invitati misurano il polso di qualcosa di più grande di loro: la capacità connaturata nell’uomo libero di far transitare idee; la volontà di superare e abbattere barriere culturali, di costume e di lingua; la forza di volere un sistema stratificato e alternativo per il transito di principi e valori. Tutte intuizioni che più largamente hanno il significato di combattere il concetto limitante e autoreferenziato di barriera, di confine e di limite come ‘negazione dell’altrove’. Il confine è una connaturazione ovvia e inevitabile per stabilire un ordine che in modo culturale si opponga all’entropia geofisica dei continenti naturali. È un concetto corretamente inevitabile nello stabilire un’appartenenza e una territorialità che consegni la misura di un luogo fisico al tempo: la dimensione di un singolo stato alla sua storia. Ma gli spiriti liberi si oppongono a disegnare il confine come ‘vincolo’ che impedisca la trasmigrazione: sanno che il confine è un’epidermide capace di tutelare un interno che permetta allo stesso tempo osmosi, passaggi, condotti, aperture e penetrazioni. Gli intellettuali colgono questa permeabilità, la fanno propria: è il principio del libero pensiero, del ritorno al naturale come ‘panico’, del tutto unico che ricordi un Eden perduto: è la geografia di Dio, teosofica e cosmogonica. Concepire come ‘trasversali’ i concetti di nord e sud, est e ovest, così come la possibilità di fare un lavoro su chi mi ospita, mi ha allettato moltissimo sin da subito. È un progetto sulla trans- medialità, trans-territorialità, trans-culturalità. Ed è anche un progetto su chi sono io ‘agli-occhi- di’. Significa lavorare su sé stessi, ma anche su un “altro” che nello specifico farà da deuteragonista e protagonista insieme, coglie il “me” poiché diventerà specchio. E viceversa. È un progetto sulle persone, sui sentimenti dell’amicizia, sull’accoglienza, sull’ospitalità, sul plasmarsi sopra qualcosa e qualcuno che ancora non conosciamo. È un progetto a lungo termine che vuole dirci chi siamo, definendo chi pensiamo siano gli altri. Sollecita l’uguaglianza partendo dalle naturali e inevitabili differenze. Voglio fare questo progetto perché prima di tutto voglio sapere chi io sia, alla mia età e con la vita che mi ritrovo, con una famiglia, moglie e lavoro, chi io sia, dicevo, agli occhi di un altro. A distanza di tempo, a distanza di diverse migliaia di chilometri. Mi piace questo scambio binario, che nessuno di noi però avrà modo di conoscere prima, una scommessa alla cieca che punta sulla posta del pensiero, del racconto, della narrazione. Narrare il doppio, il non-binario; narrare il confine aperto e la sua permeabilità; narrare l’impossibilità che hanno le singole aspirazioni nazionalistiche di opporsi all’evoluzione e al movimento delle cose e delle masse- una partita persa in partenza poiché la vita con le sue priorità premerà sempre contro la convenzione che ci siamo data come inevitabile e assoluta- sarà la scommessa di questi nove artisti. Lasciamo che loro, come fecero gli angeli in altri tempi, siano narratori di tutto questo, dando voce a quel rumore senza posa chiamata storia. Da Catania a Fribourg, e viceversa. Marcella Barone terra-terre Il progetto terra-terre, voluto e coordinato da Valeria Caflisch, è accolto con grande entusiasmo da noi artisti siciliani. L’idea di potere conoscere un luogo nuovo e tutto ciò che può contenere, evocare e raccontare, contiene in sè enormi possibilità di confronto e riflessione. Dall’altra parte ci attendono 4 artisti friburghesi con i quali si stabiliranno delle relazioni, delle connessioni o con i quali si potranno anche manifestare degli attriti o dei momenti di tensione e incomprensione di cui al momento siamo all’oscuro e che assieme al vissuto e alla storia del luogo ci serviranno da materiale per l’elaborazione di un progetto di lavoro che si intreccerà e si confronterà con il loro. Credo che per l’artista contemporaneo non ci possa essere nulla di più interessante che avere la possibilità di esercitare la propria sensibilità e la propria capacità intuitiva stabilendo nuove relazioni e ampliando sempre di più la propria esperienza umana in relazione col mondo.
