From the Editor’s Desk
A
s we enter what might normally be a slower pace of the year, you would not know it by the amount of news and
activity taking place at the CFAA. If one had any question about the challenges and dynamism present in our
industry, this issue certainly puts it to rest.
On a negative note, some allegedly fraudulent representations of fire safety expertise recently came to light in the City of
Toronto, resulting in several criminal charges and fines. There are a couple of references in this issue, from our Executive
Director and the Ontario Chapter president, that elaborate on some of the details, but suffice to say, the individuals
involved were not or never were affiliated with our organization, and we continue to strengthen our professional
accountability with ongoing training and certification. The incident may have more to say about the oversight of public
officials in their contracting processes.
However, the good news is more overwhelming. As reported in this issue, the recent inaugural Founder’s Cup Golf
tournament was a great success as was the AGM immediately following the next day. We welcome our new president,
Stephen Ames, and his introductory message in this issue. Get ready for next year as these events promise to be even
bigger and better.
Adding to the good news is the recent affiliation established between the Applied Science Technologists and Technicians
of British Columbia (ASTTBC) and the CFAA to formally recognize the CFAA Technician Program in the province. This
is just one of the initiatives taken in the provinces that is strengthening the professional recognition of our technicians
and is a tribute to the great work being done across the country.
Finally, we have a fascinating article from contributor, Jeffry Tondang, who provides us with some insight into the
challenges presented to fire safety by the imminent legalization of cannabis in Canada. This is a clear example of the
ongoing challenges and change present in our industry.

ême si cette période de l’année devrait normalement être plus calme, c’est tout le contraire pour la
quantité de nouvelles et d’activités qui ont lieu au sein de l’ACAI. Si vous avez des questions concernant
les défis et le dynamisme présents dans notre industrie, ce numéro est tout désigné pour vous.
D’un côté plutôt négatif, des représentations présumées frauduleuses concernant une expertise de sécurité
incendie ont fait surface dans la ville de Toronto, entraînant des accusations criminelles et des amendes. Le
directeur administratif et le président de la section locale de l’Ontario offrent quelques précisions à ce sujet dans
ce numéro. Néanmoins, il importe de souligner que les personnes impliquées ne sont pas et n’ont jamais été
affiliées à notre organisation, et nous continuons de renforcer notre responsabilité professionnelle grâce à la for-
mation continue et à la certification. L’incident en dit peut-être plus long sur la surveillance des agents publics
en ce qui concerne leurs processus de conclusion de contrats.
Cependant, il y a beaucoup plus de bonnes nouvelles. Comme en fait foi l’article dans le présent numéro, le
récent tournoi de golf des fondateurs a connu un grand succès, tout comme l’AGA qui a eu lieu le lendemain.
Nous accueillons notre nouveau président, qui nous présente son premier message dans ce numéro. Préparez-
vous pour l’année à venir, car ces activités seront d’une plus grande envergure.

have signed in principle an agreement with the CEGEP
of Montreal to formally instruct the CFAA program
and to assist us with translation and delivery of the pro-
gram throughout the entire province using the CEGEP
network. I anticipate the final agreement being signed
by the time you all read this edition. This is an exciting
and required step for the province of Quebec to formally
recognize and require the CFAA Technician program in
the province. Many thanks to Chapter President Daniel
Guerin and his team for their work on this for us.
In late 2018 and into 2019 we will begin the work to ex-
pand the availability of the CFAA program and courses
throughout the Maritimes. We want to assist technicians
in that location with continuing education, but also mak-
ing it easier for those wishing to pursue a career in the
industry with access to the necessary courses.
On June 19th at the AGM, the Board formally recognized
the change of our Technicians Committee to become the
Technician Advisory Committee. This will be chaired by
