Fabien Touchard, Philip Lawson, Morgan Jourdain...
Katarina Henryson (The Real Group)

                                                                                                  Geoffroy Heurard

                                                                                                                        7

Baryton-basse & direction musicale           Musique de Paris après un Master Lettres & Musique à la Sorbonne ;
actions culturelles.

PERSPECTIVES – five voices at the service of a single instrument, one we take pains in burnishing like a
violin maker planing his instrument, shaping it with the aid of all the infinite variety of colours that the
human voice has at its disposal. For the voice is not just an instrument, but the incomparable filter of
     human nature.
PERSPECTIVES – a word that expresses the readiness to open up, striking out on new paths, working
with the same degree of rigour on a piece of early music, a song, a contemporary first performance, or
a jazz number: so many different musical styles that have enabled each of us to grow, and to share our
     enthusiasm.
Like a sundial projecting shadows that shift throughout the day, the concert can be seen as a building that
is differently lit according to the time or angle it is viewed from, each time revealing a different aspect.
Through a moment’s attentive listening, going beyond time and space, putting the pieces in perspective,
letting different works encounter one another…
ENSEMBLE PERSPECTIVES is inviting us to imagine the concert in a different way, to further break down
musical barriers. Here is a building made of sounds, where the echoes of proportions, structures, arches
and lines are all interrelated, a programme that allows the ear of today to capture the timeless threads
connecting Purcell with Brahms, a traditional folk air with an art song or a contemporary work, to make
     their perspectives vibrate more freely.

THIS PROGRAMME IS EMBLEMATIC for the Ensemble, a random mix that reflects the Perspectives’ latest
passions, a crossroads between every kind of music, with the intention of establishing a dialogue between
styles. These links between classic and popular music have been forged through compositions and
arrangements created specially for the Ensemble by Alexander L’Estrange, Jonathan Rathbone, Alexander
Levine, Fabien Touchard, Philip Lawson, Morgan Jourdain and others.
THIS ALBUM marks the culmination of years of commissioning and liaison work with all these composers
of our time. It also marks our wish to portray something of their world in a ‘bespoke’ album. Our heartfelt
thanks go to them, for having offered us their music with so much artistry and generosity !
The sound of Ensemble Perspectives is the sum of each individual singer put into a pot that in turn is a group
with a personality of its own. To calibrate the artistic expression and “turn the knob” of this fine instrument is
pure joy. During the preparational residence weeks we have searched for authenticity in how to embrace the time
traveling and spectrum of styles offered in the repertoire, with music from Purcell to Paul Simon as well as pieces
and arrangements commissioned for the group. This recording gives an opportunity for the listener to be as free
of borders as the singers lending their voices and hearts to the music. Katarina Henryson (The Real Group)
PERSPECTIVES also warmly thanks Katarina Henryson for her benevolent presence, her energy, and her
infectious enthusiasm. She and Frank Jaffrès were a superb team in the recording cubicle, giving us fresh
perspectives. Our thanks also go to Victor Toussaint, whose keen perception enabled him to capture the
spirit of this album. And immense gratitude also to Renaud Brès, whose generosity and talent allowed us
to bring this wonderful adventure to completion.

                                                                                                                      11
ENSEMBLE PERSPECTIVES Ensemble Perspectives is a vocal a
FIVE VOICES AT THE SERVICE OF A SINGLE INSTRUMENT cappella quintet, and a group that is
unique in France. Since 2011, and under the artistic direction of Geoffroy Heurard, it has explored a vast
repertoire ranging from the Renaissance through the Classical period to new music, jazz, songs, pop, and
     other genres.
The Ensemble is united by its wish to reimagine the concert experience in a new area of perception, beyond
the stylistic divisions and well-trodden paths where music so often loses its Ariadne’s thread.
To that end, Perspectives focuses on developing its very own sound by creating programmes that com-
bine the rediscovery of forgotten works and composers with newly composed pieces tailor-made for the
Ensemble. Perspectives works with globally-renowned arrangers and composers of all aesthetic schools.
Hailed by both the specialist and the international press, the Ensemble’s first disc Songs of Experience was
released in September 2017 on the Alpha label (Outhere Music). In 2020, for the same label, Perspectives
     recorded its emblematic programme Playlist.
In France and elsewhere, the Ensemble is regularly invited to prestigious venues and festivals, including
the Musicales de Normandie, the Festival de Chambord, the Festival Radio France Occitanie Montpellier,
the Casino de Paris, the Musicales de Bagatelle, Flâneries Musicales de Reims, the Opéra-Comique, the
Basilica at Rocamadour, the Abbeys of Royaumont and Fontevraud, the Festival de Sully et du Loiret, Cité
de la Voix de Vezelay, the Amman Festival of Sacred Art, and Stiftsmusik Stuttgart.
The Ensemble’s quest for excellence is accompanied by its genuine desire to open up music to other
cultures, and to bring in audiences who have too often felt alienated from the arts.
Perspectives promotes access to the arts for all, liaising in multiple partnerships and projects with cultural
and social champions of the communities where the Ensemble appears (e.g. the disabled, schools, prisons)
     – all of which further enriches the Ensemble’s identity.

GEOFFROY HEURARD Geoffroy Heurard enrolled at the Conservatoire National Supérieur
Bass-baritone & music direction de Musique in Paris after taking a Masters in Literature and Music
at the Sorbonne University; he made a special study of French song and the German Lied, as well as
baroque repertoire with Emmanuelle Haïm. Having won a Lavoisier bursary, he spent three years further
improving his technique at the Universität für Musik und darstellende Kunst in Vienna, notably in the
Lied and Oratorio class of Charles Spencer. He also took part in masterclasses with Walter Berry, Craig
Rutenberg, Jean-Christophe Benoît, Russel Ryan, Pierre Mervant, Rachèle Yakar, David Pittman-Jennings,
Nicole Fallien, Yves Sotin, and the vocal group The King’s Singers.
He was selected to participate in the Fifth European Forum Lyrique at Arles; his on-stage roles include
Superintendent Budd in Britten’s Albert Herring, Ben in The Telephone by Menotti, and contemporary operas
as well. Passionately committed to the art of the song recital, he has performed Schubert’s Die Winterreise,
and the Dichterliebe and Liederkreis Op. 39 cycles by Schumann, as well as French song, in recitals at Tou-
louse (in the Halle aux Grains), and in Paris, Lyon, Ghent and Geneva, accompanied at the piano by Antoine
Palloc and Yann Molenat. Both as soloist and choir member he has sung with les Arts Florissants (directed
by William Christie), the Ensemble Correspondances (Sebastien Daucé), the Ensemble Pygmalion (Raphaël
Pichon), les Cris de Paris (Geoffroy Jourdain), Le Balcon (Maxime Pascal), Le Poème Harmonique (Vincent
Dumestre) and la Main Harmonique (Frédéric Bétous).
His discovery of vocal ‘a cappella’ music (particularly in small groups) during his years of training came
as a revelation to him. On winning a Banque Populaire Foundation Award in 2011, he formed Ensemble
Perspectives, a group of five singers, to explore all the treasures of the vocal a cappella repertoire. Having
himself an orphan disease he is sensitive to the problems of the disabled, engaging in many cultural
activities on their behalf.

Mournfully evermore, the wild wind sobs and raves.
A sadness and a sense of deep unrest
      Zu mir den Klang getragen.
Brood on the clouds and on the water’s breast.
      Von herbem Leid und Traurigkeit
But lo! The white seamew careering, float indolently by,
      Ist mir das Herz zerflossen.
And lo! A snowy sail appearing gleams fair against the sky,
      Die Blümelein mit Tränen rein
The sadness and the loneliness depart,
      Hab’ ich sie all’ begossen
And nature smiles with sympathy of heart.
      Der schöne Mond will untergahn,
                                                                                                                        15

 8. Whither Must I Wander (arr. Philip Lawson) 9. Oh, You Wide Steppe (arr. Alexander Levine)
 From Songs of Travel
Home no more home to me, whither must I wander?
Hunger my driver, I go where I must.
Cold blows the winter wind over hill and heather:
Thick drives the rain and my roof is in the dust.
Loved of wise men was the shade of my roof-tree,
The true word of welcome was spoken in the door–
Dear days of old with the faces in the firelight, Alexander LEVINE (*1955)
Kind folks of old, you come again no more. 10. Sicut Cervus
Home was home then, my dear, full of kindly faces, Sicut cervus desiderat ad fontes aquarum,
Home was home then, my dear, happy for the child. Ita desiderat anima mea ad te, Deus.
       Fire and the windows bright glittered on the moorland;
Song, tuneful song, built a palace in the wild. Sitivit anima mea ad Deum fortem vivum :
                                                                       Quando veniam
Now when day dawns on the brow of the moorland, Et apparebo ante faciem Dei ?
Lone stands the house, and the chimney-stone is cold.
Fuerunt mihi lacrimae maeae panes die ac nocte,
Lone let it stand, now the friends are all departed,
                                                                       Dum dicitur mihi quotidie :
The kind hearts, the true hearts, that loved the place
                                                                       Ubi est Deus tuus ?
       of old.
Spring shall come, come again, calling up the moorfowl,
Spring shall bring the sun and the rain, bring the bees
       and flowers;
Red shall the heather bloom over hill and valley,
Soft flow the stream through the even-flowing hours.
Fair the day shine as it shone on my childhood–
       Fair shine the day on the house with open door;
Birds come and cry there and twitter in the chimney–
But I go for ever and come again no more.

11. Fifty Ways to Leave your Lover (arr. Alexander L’Estrange) right
“The problem is all inside your head”, she said to me There must be fifty ways to leave your lover
“The answer is easy if you take it logically Fifty ways to leave your lover
I’d like to help you in your struggle to be free You just slip out the back, Jack
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover” Make a new plan, Stan
She said, “it’s really not my habit to intrude You don’t need to be coy, Roy
Furthermore, I hope my meaning won’t be lost or misconstrued Just get yourself free
But I’ll repeat myself at the risk of being crude Oh, you hop on the bus, Gus
There must be fifty ways to leave your lover You don’t need to discuss much
Fifty ways to leave your lover” Just drop off the key, Lee

Hop on the bus, Gus You just listen to me
You don’t need to discuss much Hop on the bus, Gus
Just drop off the key, Lee You don’t need to discuss much
And get yourself free Just drop off the key, Lee
Ooh, slip out the back, Jack And get yourself free

      And get yourself free
She said, “it grieves me so to see you in such pain
I wish there was something I could do to make you smile again”
I said, “I appreciate that and would you please explain
      About the fifty ways”
She said, “why don’t we both just sleep on it tonight?

All by yourself Il est bon, l’Enfant, il est sage, bien sage...
Don’t turn your head Il a pansé la plaie, étanché le sang...
Back over your shoulder Il est sage, si sage, si doux.
And only stop to rest yourself Il est bon, l’Enfant, il est sage, bien sage.
When the silver moon Il est si doux.

15. Alice (arr. Morgan Jourdain) Of Alice
It’s dreamy weather we’re on And so a secret kiss
You waved your crooked wand Brings madness with the bliss
Along an icy pond with a frozen moon And I will think of this
A murder of silhouette crows I saw When I’m dead in my grave
And the tears on my face Set me adrift and I’m lost over there
And the skates on the pond And I must be insane
They spell Alice To go skating on your name
I disappear in your name And by tracing it twice
But you must wait for me I fell through the ice
Somewhere across the sea Of Alice
      There’s a wreck of a ship
Your hair is like meadow grass on the tide
And the raindrops on my window
And the ice in my drink
Baby all I can think of is Alice
      Arithmetic arithmetock
Turn the hands back on the clock
How does the ocean rock the boat?
How did the razor find my throat?
The only strings that hold me here
Are tangled up around the pier
      And so a secret kiss
      Brings madness with the bliss
And I will think of this
When I’m dead in my grave
Set me adrift and I’m lost over there
      And I must be insane
To go skating on your name
