Architecture du moment... Un nouvel arrivage architectural empli de fraîcheur et de saveurs, source de bonheur et d’expériences visuelles et sensorielles, témoin de gestes écoresponsables. Plus de trente ans après la tenue de ses premiers Prix d’excellence en architecture, l’Ordre des architectes du Québec présente cette année quarante projets tous azimuts et trois architectes de cœur et d’action. Architecture of the moment... It comes as a new arrival, full of freshness and flavour. It is a source of happiness that provides visual and sensorial experiences. This is architecture that bears witness to eco-responsible actions. More than thirty years after the first Awards of Excellence in Architecture were handed out, the Ordre des architectes du Québec unveils this year’s forty projects, and three Architects who put their heart into action for the good of the community.

Perennial Architecture
Le nouveau Prix Pérennité Les Affaires souligne les qualités et la durabilité architecturales d'un bâtiment public érigé
au Québec il y a 25 ans et plus.
On entend ici par « architecture pérenne » un bâtiment dont le design initial a été respecté et qui, n'ayant généré
qu'un minimum raisonnable d'efforts pour son maintien et entretien, n'a fait l'objet d'aucune rénovation ou restauration
majeure. S'il y a lieu, il aura permis une réappropriation aisée des espaces pour l'intégration de fonctions évolutives
au sein du bâtiment.
Perennial Architecture
The new Les Affaires Perennial Award highlights the architectural qualities and durability of a public building erected
in Quebec 25 years ago and more.
Perennial architecture refers to a building that has not undergone major renovation or restoration, and that remains
faithful to its original design while generating a reasonably small amount of energy and effort for maintenance and upkeep.
Where applicable, a smooth reallocation of space may have occurred in order to integrate evolving functions within
the building.54

Exceptional architects of action
Le nouveau Prix Action récompense un(e) architecte pour son initiative, son implication exemplaire, un geste ou
une réalisation significative favorisant des pratiques architecturales souhaitables.
Ce prix n’est pas lié à un projet d'architecture dans le bâtiment, contrairement aux autres catégories. Il ne récompense
pas l'œuvre d'une carrière entière mais bien des actions ponctuelles et circonscrites qui profitent à une collectivité.
Exceptional architects of action
The new Architects in Action Award reward an architect for his or her initiative, exemplary involvement or
significant gesture while encouraging the desired architectural practices.
Unlike the other categories, this award is not tied in with an architectural project. It does not reward the work

Gary Michael Conrath a publié à compte d’auteur ce livre à édition limitée sur la carrière de l’important architecte
montréalais Norman Slater. Ce document témoin basé sur des archives, surtout photographiques, met en lumière la
naissance de l’architecture moderne à Montréal. Parmi les premiers professionnels et créateurs à faire preuve d’une
approche multidisciplinaire, Norman Slater a contribué à des projets comme la Place des Arts, l’hôtel Château Champlain,
le réseau du Métro de Montréal et la Maison Alcan. La structure du livre permet de saisir le sujet selon la chronologie
d’un projet d’architecture à partir de l’idée et du dessin jusqu’à la production.
Gary espère procéder à une publication à plus grande échelle de ce livre qui témoigne de la démarche créatrice de
Normand Slater qui introduit plusieurs architectes de renom des années 1950 et 1960.
A RCHITECT , MOVER AND AUTHOR OF LIVRE N ORMAN S LATER NOW AND BEYOND
Gary Michael Conrath authored and published this limited edition book on the career of major Montreal architect
Norman Slater. This testimonial, drawn from archival and photographic material, sheds light on the birth of modern
architecture in Montréal. As one of the first professionals and creators to demonstrate a multidisciplinary approach,
Norman Slater contributed to such projects as Place des Arts, the Château Champlain Hotel, the Montréal Métro system
and the Maison Alcan. The book is structured to allow the reader to follow a chronology of works of architecture from
the idea and design stages to production. Gary hopes for a larger publication run of his book, which serves as a testimony
to the creative work of Normand Slater and as an introduction to many well-known architects of the 1950s and ’60s.

Grâce à un partenariat entre la Ville de Montréal et le ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition fémi-
nine, Denis Lemieux a étroitement collaboré à l’élaboration et à la mise en œuvre du plan d’action municipal « Design de
ville | Ville de design » et au démarrage du bureau Design Montréal. Il a entre autres participé à l’élaboration du dossier de can-
didature de Montréal au titre de Ville créative en design auprès de l’UNESCO et au lancement de la première journée Portes
Ouvertes Design Montréal. En parallèle, il a poursuivi un travail colossal de veille internationale pour identifier les meilleures
pratiques en matière d’architecture et de design urbain. Cette recherche a donné lieu à la publication d’un ouvrage dont il
est l’auteur principal, Imaginer, réaliser la ville du 21e siècle – Cahiers des bonnes pratiques en design.
A RCHITECT , CONSULTANT IN SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT
Thanks to a partnership between the Ville de Montréal and the ministère de la Culture, des Communications et de la Condition
féminine, Denis Lemieux collaborated closely on the drafting and implementation of the city’s Ville de design/Design de ville
action plan and on the opening of Design Montréal. Among his other achievements, he took part in preparing Montréal’s
application for certification as a UNESCO City of Design, part of UNESCO’s Creative Cities Network, and in the launch of
the first Open House Design Montréal. At the same time, he undertook an enormous international monitoring task to identify
best practices in architecture and urban design. This research led to the publication of a work on which he was the lead author,
entitled Imaginer, réaliser la ville du 21e siècle – Cahiers des bonnes pratiques en design.

En partenariat avec l’Ordre des architectes du Québec et la Société d’habitation du Québec, l’organisation humanitaire
Architectes de l’urgence s’est implantée au Québec afin de contribuer aux actions du regroupement international en sol
canadien. C’est Bernard McNamara qui a mené à bien la mise sur pied de cette section canadienne. En plus de travailler
à la structure de l’organisation et à la recherche de partenaires, Bernard souhaitait que des activités humanitaires
soient entreprises rapidement. La première mission qu’il pilote, initiée en partie par l’Association des stagiaires en
architecture, vise à venir en aide à la population algonquine de Kitcisakik en Abitibi en améliorant ses conditions de
vie et l’environnement bâti. Deux nouvelles missions, l’une en Afrique de l’Ouest, l’autre en Haïti, viennent d’être
lancées pour AUC, à la suite des initiatives de Bernard.
A RCHITECT , PRÉSIDENT AND FOUNDING MEMBER OF E MERGENCY A RCHITECTS C ANADA
In partnership with the OAQ and the Société d’habitation du Québec, Emergency Architects opened a branch
in Québec (AUC) to contribute to the international humanitarian organization’s pool of emergency architects on
Canadian soil. Bernard McNamara was the major force behind AUC becoming a reality. As he worked on the
organization’s structure and searched for partners, he hoped that the Quebec branch could begin its humanitarian
work quickly. Its first mission, initiated in part by the Association des stagiaires en architecture du Québec, aimed at
helping the Algonquin First Nation in Kitcisakik in Abitibi to improve their living conditions and building environment.
On Bernard’s initiative, the AUC has launched two new missions, one in West Africa and the other in Haiti.

Youth & Architecture program
Le programme Architecture et jeunesse vise, depuis 2003, à éveiller et sensibiliser les jeunes du primaire (3e cycle) et du secondaire (III) à l’architecture
qui les entoure. La participation des enfants et adolescents aux activités d’apprentissage suggérées par l’OAQ aide à comprendre l’importance d’un
environnement bâti de qualité, adapté aux besoins des générations actuelles et futures. Le lien entre ce programme éducatif et celui des Prix d’excellence
tire profit d’une abondance de projets actuels, imagés et documentés, présentés aux jeunes comme de bons exemples d’architecture. Ils développent
ainsi une culture architecturale à travers des visites de lieux, des rencontres avec des architectes et divers ateliers interactifs. En famille, ils sont invités
à prendre part aux événements publics et culturels organisés dans le cadre des Prix d’excellence en architecture. Tout comme les experts, ils constituent
des jurys de sélection et déterminent un lauréat d’après des critères établis à la lumière de leurs expériences et de leur apprentissage. Les lauréats
du Prix Vision Architecture et jeunesse sont ainsi annoncés en juin, à tous les deux ans.
The Youth & Architecture program is organized in parallel with the Awards of Excellence in Architecture since 2003. Its aim is to raise awareness among
elementary school students (Cycle 3) and Secondary 3 students about the architecture that surrounds them. By participating in the various learning activities
suggested by the OAQ, young people learn the importance of quality built environment that is adapted to the needs of present and future generations. The
association between this educational program and the Awards of Excellence benefits from an abundance of current, imagined and documented projects, which
are presented as good examples of architecture. Young people can expand their knowledge by taking part, with their families, in the public and cultural events
planned for the Awards of Excellence programming. During the school year, they are introduced to architectural principles through various interactive workshops
while meeting with architects and visiting relevant sites. Like the juries of experts, the students choose winners from among the projects entered in the contest,
based on their knowledge and experiences. Results from these juries are revealed every second year, in June, through the Young People's Choice Award.
