Here we are! We are thrilled to welcome you all Nous y voilà ! Nous sommes ravies de vous
to the second conference of the research group accueillir au deuxième colloque du groupe de
EducLang of the Faculty of Education (University recherche EducLang de la Faculté d'éducation

Teachers as knowledge generators: Whole-school approaches to revitalizing
language education

Although Canada enjoys a strong international reputation as a leader in language education,
largely as a result of French immersion initiatives that began in the 1960s, second language
teaching outcomes over the past 50 years have consistently fallen short of expectations and
policy goals. The unfortunate reality is that most Canadian schools still do very little to support
the multilingual potential of the many students who come to school speaking languages other
than English or French. Fortunately, despite systematic constraints, stakeholder efforts to
optimize the language learning experience of Canadian students continue. Drawing on current
Canadian examples of pedagogical practice, this presentation will explore ways in which
educators can generate evidence-based policies and instructional practices that have the potential
to more effectively promote students’ bilingual and multilingual abilities than is currently the
case. A starting point for all stakeholders (not just language teachers) is to ask:
· What instructional practices will motivate students to invest (and expand) their
identities in learning the target language?
· What kinds of policy and instruction will enable students to rapidly reach a threshold
of proficiency where they can do meaningful (i.e. identity-affirming) things with the
language and with their emerging multilingual repertoires?
To address these questions, I will argue that a whole-school approach is required, as well as
several key paradigm shifts, including that teachers be seen as knowledge-generators rather than
simply transmitters of curriculum, and that researchers consider the consequential validity of

Bilingualism for all: examining the evidence on at-risk learners

Abstract: There are multiple benefits to bilingualism: the ability to communicate with people in
multiple languages, enhanced job opportunities in the global market place, and cognitive
advantages, among others. Thus, it is important that all children have the opportunity to become
bilingual. However, parents of children with developmental disorders or background
characteristics that might put them at-risk for academic difficulty are often discouraged from
raising or educating their children bilingually. Research evidence for these concerns is examined
in this talk. I begin by examining research evidence on dual language development of children
with typical and atypical development from birth to 5 years of age. I then discuss research that
has examined the language, cognitive and academic development of at-risk learners who are in
dual language school programs. There will be a focus on students at risk for reading or language
impairment because these are significant sources of difficulty in school.
Résumé : Le bilinguisme présente plusieurs avantages: entre autres, la capacité de communiquer
avec des personnes dans plusieurs langues, de meilleures possibilités d’emploi sur le marché
mondial ainsi que des avantages cognitifs. Il est donc important que tous les enfants aient la
possibilité de devenir bilingues. Cependant, les parents d'enfants présentant des troubles du
développement ou des caractéristiques susceptibles de les exposer à des difficultés scolaires sont
souvent découragés d'élever ou d'éduquer leurs enfants de manière bilingue. Les données de la
recherche portant sur ces préoccupations sont analysées dans cette présentation. Je commence en
analysant les données probantes issues de la recherche sur le développement bilingue du langage
chez les enfants présentant un développement typique et atypique de la naissance à 5 ans. Je
discute ensuite des recherches ayant porté sur le développement linguistique, cognitif et scolaire
des apprenants à risque qui sont inscrits à des programmes scolaires bilingues. L'accent sera mis
sur les élèves à risque de troubles du langage ou de lecture, qui constituent des sources

Résumé : L’évolution de nos sociétés a mis au premier plan la nature sociale et dynamique de la relation que
les individus entretiennent avec les langues et les cultures au cours de leurs trajectoires de vie. La médiation est
une notion clé pour comprendre les phénomènes qui impliquent des formes de contact entre les individus et les
contextes sociaux dans lesquels ils/elles se trouvent à interagir. Cette notion permet d’investiguer aussi bien la
transmission que la (co)construction du sens mais aussi de la manière dont ces deux processus se déclinent dans
la pratique de la langue dans la salle de classe et ailleurs. En didactiques des langues, la médiation ouvre la voie
à une perspective innovante, complexe et actionnelle. Avec une trentaine de nouvelles échelles de descripteurs
de la médiation, la nouvelle édition du Cadre européen commun de référence pour les langues (CECR)
représente un outil clé dans ce processus d’innovation, comme elle favorise une nouvelle attitude plurilingue et

plurilingue en tant qu’outil de médiation pour explorer la nature de cette attitude, ses implications ainsi que son
potentiel quant au rôle que les langues et leur apprentissage peuvent jouer dans la construction des profils
plurilingues des apprenants et en dernière ligne dans le maintien de la biodiversité culturelle de nos sociétés.
Abstract: The evolution of our societies has foregrounded the social and dynamic nature of individuals’
relationship with languages and cultures throughout their life trajectories. Mediation is a key notion to
understand those phenomena which imply some form of contact between individuals and the social milieu they
are called to interact with. This notion opens the door to an in-depth examination of both transmission and
(co)construction of meaning but also of the way these two processes are carried out in language practice inside
and outside of the classroom. In language teaching, mediation opens to an innovative perspective, which is
dynamic and action-oriented. With some thirty new scales of descriptors for mediation, the new edition of the
Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR) represents a key tool in this innovation
process, as it fosters a new dynamic and plurilingual attitude towards languages and their use. In this
presentation, I will employ my own plurilingual repertoire as a mediational tool to explore the nature of such an
attitude, its implications, and its potential when it comes to the role that languages and language learning can
play in the construction of learners’ plurilingual profiles and eventually in the protection of our societies’
cultural biodiversity.

of Ottawa’s Faculty of Education and the Centre for Research on Educational and Community
Services (CRECS), is a provincial multi-stakeholder bilingual knowledge mobilization network
that brings equity innovators together in order to stimulate activities and support product
development that can be used to break down current systemic barriers to children and youth from
marginalized groups.
RSEKN is committed to developing systemic, sustainable, and transformative equity networks,
processes, and structures to mobilize research and community knowledge and practices with
K-12 schooling stakeholders.
RSEKN will connect teacher candidates, teachers, administrators, researchers, and community
groups who share a commitment to removing barriers to equity and inclusion for marginalized
and racialized children and youth. The RSEKN will extend existing local, regional and
provincial networks to address its priority outcomes.
