THE GOLF-ÉTUDES PROGRAM To make a dream come true... INFORMATION 2021-2022 SCHOOL YEAR A program managed, accredited and sanctioned by the Québec Golf Federation
2021-2022 Sport-études program WHO ARE THE SPORT-ÉTUDES PROGRAMS FOR? The objective of any Sport-études program is for student-athletes to achieve the best possible balance between their athletic and academic goals. Academic success takes precedence over the achievement of athletic goals. This fundamental principle serves as a premise for the admission of any athlete to each partner school of a recognized program. The learning pace in such a program is faster than in regular programs. Athletes accepted into a Sport-études program generally demonstrate a higher sense of autonomy and dedication while being highly committed to the pursuit of excellence, both in their academic and athletic performances. WHY CHOOSE A RECOGNIZED SPORT-ÉTUDES PROGRAM? There are many initiatives in the sports sector in Québec. Concentration programs are one of them but they cannot use the name Sport-études in their communications as the content of these programs does not meet the requirements of the Ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur (MEES) for a recognized Sport-études program. There are many MEES rules for the recognition of a Sport-études program. These are few: • The high school (host school) must supervise a minimum of 25 student-athletes identified by their relevant sports federations. • The school must organize closed groups of students for each grade level in which it has identified student-athlete. • The host school must ensure that the offered adapted program complies with the current pedagogical regime. It must free up at least 25% of the time that is normally scheduled in the subject grid for students at the same grade level and allow a daily period of three consecutive hours between 7:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. for the sports structure to take over or a period of eight hours after the beginning of classes. • The Federation shall guarantee the conditions of sports supervision, either directly or through the supervision of its representative. • The sports supervision must include an average of 15 hours of training per week at a rate of three hours per school day during the school year. • The Federation or its representative is also responsible for ensuring that athletes are coached by coaches whose certification corresponds at a minimum to a Level 3 or "trained" status in the Competition-Development context of the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP), according to an acceptable athlete-coach ratio depending on the sport. Only recognized Sport-études programs are eligible for financial support from the Direction du sport et de l'activité physique (DSLAP) and only identified student-athletes are eligible for the board and transportation assistance measure of the Ministère de l'Éducation et de l'Enseignement supérieur (MEES). Training program The training goals are based on the annual training program and it is from there that weekly and daily themes take shape (technique, strategy, tactics, etc.). The main theme represents the cornerstone from which the various educational programs responding to the specific needs of the athletes will be developed. An educational drill is an exercise that presents a precise objective to be achieved according to defined parameters (conditions of achievement, success criteria, observation points, etc.). This method allows personalizing the training of each athlete. In order to monitor the progress made by athletes, a brief evaluation is regularly sent to parents during the school year. Optional parent-coach meetings may be organized. It is important to note that it is always possible to contact your child's coach. TRAINING - MONTHLY STRUCTURE September and October Outdoor training begins in early September and ends in late October or when it is too cold to go outside and the risk of injury is too great. These two months of training are very demanding for athletes at all levels. Every day, athletes leave their respective schools in the early afternoon to go to the golf club they are affiliated with as part of the Golf Québec Golf-études program. Coaches supervise all training sessions. Training during these months is aimed at correcting golf technique, ensuring the transfer of acquired knowledge to game situations and accumulating the necessary data to ensure the effectiveness of indoor training sessions. SCHOOL TOUR This Tour is unique in Canada and includes: Five 36-hole tournaments strategically located in the school calendar (registration fees paid by Golf Québec). Corrective interventions made to athletes by coaches during competitions. Individual and team results. In order to be part of the Golf-études program as well as to participate in the tournaments of the school tour, each student-athlete must possess a 2021 Golf Québec/Golf Canada membership. If you are not a member in a golf club, it is possible to obtain this membership online (Join Now). This Tour is exclusive to student-athletes registered in the Golf-études program. Page 8
In terms of competition, first tournaments on the School Tour The first two of the five tournaments on the School Tour for the 2021-2022 school year are scheduled in the fall. 2021-2022 School Tour - Tournaments 1 and 2 Dates: Information to come (planned for September and October 2021) Golf club: Information to come Includes: Two golf rounds, access to the driving range including practice balls as well as corrective interventions by the attending coaches Results: Individual and team Costs: Meals, transportation and accommodation (if required) at the athlete's expense Supervision: All coaches in the program Selection: All student-athletes registered in the program, without restriction November and December Indoor golf training When the weather conditions are no longer suitable, training takes place indoors. This training period starts towards the end of October (depending on the temperature) until mid-December 2021. Please note that transportation to the indoor training facility is the responsibility of each athlete. The training facility is, in most cases, located at or near the school. Fitness A golf player must have undeniable basic physical abilities: power, speed, coordination, aerobic endurance, flexibility, etc. The maintenance of a high golfing potential is based on physical abilities modulated by a perfect adaptation to the technique and psychological conditions of the game. This is why the athlete's physical preparation is so important, not to say essential. This training, lasting 12 to 15 consecutive weeks, is divided into two phases, one of four to five weeks, called general, and the other of eight to ten weeks, called specific. The general physical preparation phase begins in October, two to three times a week. Specialized staff working in fitness centres is able to draw up a list of appropriate exercises for this type of training. Athletes who have actively participated in the general fitness phase will benefit more from the specific fitness phase. Although athletes have access to training facilities at their school, it may be recommended that they also consider an annual membership in a fitness centre to increase their training frequency. This should be discussed with the coach. Page 9
January to April Resuming of indoor golf training Golf training resumes at the indoor training facility of each structure as soon as athletes return to class in January 2021 and will continue until the third week of April or until the weather permits to go back outside. Spring Training Camp, North Carolina, USA (March - voluntary participation) The objective of this training camp is to prepare the athlete for the tournament season. During a whole week, the student-athletes of the Golf Québec Golf-études program benefit from remarkable golf infrastructures. In order to maximize the performance and efficiency of the spring training camp for both athletes and coaches, venues are always selected according to specific criteria such as the quality and difficulty of the golf courses, the size and diversity of training structures (greens, bunkers, driving range, etc.) as well as the quantity and quality of range balls. The quality of accommodation and the proximity of restaurants and supermarkets are also taken into account. Information on this activity, including the cost, will be published by January 2022 at the latest. 2021-2022 School Tour – Tournament 3 The tournament is held during the spring training camp in Wilmington, North Carolina. Eligibility: Voluntary participation Dates: March 2022 (dates to be confirmed) Costs: At the athlete's expense Supervision: Approximately one coach for 10 athletes Page 10
Avril et mai Outdoor training resumes as soon as weather conditions allow doing so in Québec (usually by the third week of April). The structure of the training sessions is similar to that used in the fall. However, their content is focused on getting ready for the competitive season. More specifically, tactical, strategic and psychological concepts are prioritized. The last training session of the year is scheduled for June 3, 2022. Tournament planning Training sessions in April and May are also used to plan for the tournament season which begins in June. Coaches support the athletes in this planning process so that the athletes can benefit from a balanced tournament schedule, broken down with recovery periods that are necessary for the proper development of any athlete. It should be noted that the follow-up and coaching of student-athletes during the competitive season is not included in the fees of the Golf-études program. An agreement can be made with the coach to obtain private coaching, without any obligation on both sides. 2021-2022 School Tour – Tournaments 4 and 5 Dates: Information to come (planned for May and June 2022) Golf club: Information to come Duration: Two days Includes: Two golf rounds, access to the driving range including practice balls as well as corrective interventions by the attending coaches Results: Individual and team Costs: Meals, transportation and accommodation (if required) at the athlete's expense Supervision: All coaches in the program Selection: All student-athletes registered in the program, without restriction Page 11
