Hola Mi Amol
La photographe franco-dominicaine Karla Hiraldo Voleau
a grandi avec un avertissement constant : « Ne sors ja-
mais avec un Dominicain ! » Pour « Hola Mi Amol », son
travail de diplôme en Master Photographie à l’ECAL/Ecole
cantonale d’art de Lausanne, Hiraldo Voleau retourne en
République dominicaine. Elle y porte son regard sur les
nombreux hommes qu’elle croise, travaillant pour la plu-
part dans le tourisme. Sensuel, non mis en scène, parfois
érotique, le livre est ponctué d’autoportraits vulnérables
et de rencontres intimes. Accompagné de courts textes,
« Hola Mi Amol », le premier livre co-publié par l’ECAL
et SPBH Editions, se déploie dans une histoire à la fois
féroce, drôle et compatissante. Sans sa mère, sa tante
ou sa grand-mère (toutes tombées amoureuses, mariées
ou ayant eu un enfant là-bas), Hiraldo Voleau se libère
des interdits pour explorer amour, sexualité et amitié.
Inévitablement, son projet performatif porte une trace
de la solitude et des disparités souvent brutales de notre
époque. La curiosité d’Hiraldo Voleau pour l’érotisme,
la virilité, les identités culturelles et raciales et le statut
du regard féminin vibre à travers les pages de ce premier
album déroutant.

French-Dominican photographer Karla Hiraldo Voleau
grew up with a constant warning: “Never date a Domi-
nican! ” In “Hola Mi Amol”, her diploma work in Master
Photography at ECAL/University of Art and Design
Lausanne, Hiraldo Voleau goes back to the Dominican
Republic. She looks at the many men she meets, mostly
men working the in tourism trade. Sensual, unstaged,
sometimes erotic, the book is punctuated by vulnerable
self-portraits and intimate encounters. Accompanied
by short texts, “Hola Mi Amol”, the first book co-published
by ECAL and SPBH Editions, unfolds into a story that
is fierce, funny and compassionate. Without her mother,
aunt or grandmother (all of whom had fallen in love,
married or had a child there), Hiraldo Voleau freed her-
self from the prohibitions to explore love, sexuality and
friendship. Inevitably, her performative project bears
a trace of loneliness, of the often brutal disparities of
our times. Hiraldo Voleau's curiosity about eroticism,
virility, cultural and racial identities and the status of
the female gaze vibrates through through the pages
of this sly and stunning debut.

Karla Hiraldo Voleau, née en République dominicaine en 1992, vit et travaille à Lausanne.
Elle est diplômée de l’ECAL avec un Master en Photographie, obtenu en 2018. Son tra-
vail a été présenté aux Rencontres d’Arles 2017, à Plat(t)form Winterthur 2019, ainsi
qu’au sein du festival MAP 2016. Elle fait partie de la Promotion pour la Relève de
la Photographie Pro Helvetia 2018, et est lauréate du 3ème prix VFG Jeunes Talents pour
la Photographie Suisse 2018. Son livre ‘Hola Mi Amol’ fait partie de la sélection des
Unseen Dummy Awards 2018, et est actuellement publié par les éditions Self Publish
Be Happy et l’ECAL.

Karla Hiraldo Voleau, born in the Dominican Republic in 1992, lives and works in
Lausanne. She graduated from ECAL with a Master in Photography in 2018. Her work
has been presented at the Rencontres d’Arles 2017, at Plat(t)form Winterthur 2019,
as well as at the MAP festival in 2016. She is part of the Pro Helvetia 2018 Promotion
