Pendant cette saison de l’Avent vous avez peut-être remarqué que notre environnement et notre attention sont captivés par les cadeaux.
Ils prennent non seulement beaucoup de place dans les vitrines des magasins de la 5ème Avenue mais aussi peut-être dans votre esprit si,
comme moi, vous cherchez quoi offrir pour Noël. On peut se réjouir ou se désoler de ce consumérisme facile, mais qu’en serait-il si, comme
le Christ nous y invite en ce moment, nous prenions le temps d’y déchiffrer les “signes des temps” ? Qu’en serait-il si nous prenions le temps
d’apprécier la valeur de ces cadeaux, ceux que nous nous apprêtons à offrir ou bien à recevoir ?
Depuis que je suis rentré en France en juin, j’ai pris la mesure incommensurable de tout ce que le Bon Dieu m’a offert parmi vous. Je suis parti
avec peu de bagages (j’ai même laissé mes vêtements d’hiver dans la cave de l’église !) mais j’ai emporté avec moi l’essentiel : tous les pré-
sents sans poids et sans prix que vous m’avez donnés. En plus de quelques petits souvenirs, j’ai ramené avec moi en France une manière de
vivre en église dans l’unité et la diversité, d’écouter avec attention les mouvements de l’Esprit et de prier ensemble et les uns pour les autres.
Parmi vous le Christ Jésus m’a donné d’être quelqu’un d’autre et cela m’a plus d’une fois fait me sentir étranger dans mon propre pays. Parmi
vous il m’a doté de nouveaux dons et m’a aussi remis en route pour les partager. Au cours de ces derniers mois mon expérience à St. Esprit a
nourri tous mes échanges amicaux, familiaux, ecclésiaux, des plus au moins informels. Partout où l’on me demandait d’où je venais ou ce que
je faisais je finissais par parler de vous ! J’ai parlé de vous dans les bars et les cafés ainsi qu’à l’Eglise protestante de Rennes où j’ai été invité à
prêcher. Vous étiez avec moi à l’Eglise épiscopale de Nice, à celle de Dinard, à la Mission épiscopale francophone à Paris, sur les ondes de la
radio Fréquence Protestante, dans les monastères où j’allais en retraite... Beaucoup de personnes sont surprises et piquées de curiosité
quand je leur dis être anglican. Elles sont encore plus surprises quand je leur parle de notre église : une église anglicane, francophone,
internationale… à New York ! Dieu aime faire des surprises !
J’espère, si Dieu le permet, pouvoir vous rendre visite à New York prochainement. Ce voyage me permettra de vous revoir avant que le Diocèse
de New York ne m’envoie à Rome en tant que missionnaire YASC (Young Adult Service Corps) à partir de janvier. J’aurai pour une durée de six
mois la joie et l’honneur de servir l’Eglise épiscopale et la Communion anglicane dans la Città eterna. Mon temps se partagera entre l’église
Saint Paul-dans-les-Murs, paroisse épiscopalienne qui dispose d’un centre d’accueil de migrants et le Centre anglican qui a vocation, sous la
houlette de l’Archevêque Ian Ernest, de représenter la Communion anglicane auprès du Saint-Siège.
Cette nouvelle mission m’enthousiasme et je suis très honoré de pouvoir continuer à travailler à mon humble niveau à la communion entre
les Églises, non seulement entre notre Diocèse de New York et les églises épiscopales et anglicanes du continent européen, mais aussi entre
la Communion anglicane et l’Eglise catholique romaine. Après avoir été étranger parmi les étrangers dans notre petite église francophone
j’aurai aussi à cœur de me mettre au service de celles et ceux qui, comme ceux qui ont fondé notre église et l’ont fait grandir, ont dû fuir leur
pays pour une vie meilleure.
Quand je regarde l’année qui s’est écoulée et celle qui s’annonce, je suis heureux de voir que tous les petits cadeaux que Dieu nous fait, si nous
les recevons et les donnons à notre tour, nous lient tous ensemble par-delà les kilomètres et les siècles. Tous ces dons, quelle que soit leur
valeur marchande, tissent l’Eglise. Ces petites ou grandes attentions, ces pensées, ces prières, sont des instruments visibles de notre
communion. Ils font sans cesse renaître entre nos mains et entre nos cœurs ce cadeau merveilleux de Dieu : « un fils nous [sera] donné. » (Ésaïe
9:6)

During this Advent season you may have noticed that our surroundings and our attention are
captivated by gifts. They not only take up a lot of room in 5th Avenue store windows but also
maybe in your mind if, like me, you’re looking for presents to give for Christmas. We can rejoice
or grieve over this easy consumerism, but what if, as Christ invites us right now, we took the
time to decipher the “signs of the times”? What if we took the time to appreciate the value of
these gifts, the ones we are about to give or receive?
Since returning to France in June, I have reflected on the immeasurable measure of all that
God has offered me while I was with you. I left with little luggage (I even left my winter clothes
in the cellar of the church!) But I took the essentials with me: all the light-weight and priceless
gifts you have given me. In addition to a few small memories, I brought with me to France a
way of living in a church in unity and diversity, of listening attentively to the movements of the
Spirit and of praying together and for each other. Among you, Christ Jesus enabled me to be
someone else and more than once this made me feel like a stranger in my own country.
Among you, he endowed me with new gifts and also set me back on the road to share them.
During these last months, my experience at St. Esprit has nourished all my friendly, familial,
ecclesial, and more or less informal exchanges. Everywhere I went, when I was asked where I
was from or what I was doing, I ended up talking about you! I have spoken about you in bars
and cafes as well as at the Protestant Church of Rennes where I have been invited to preach.
You were with me at the Episcopal Church in Nice, at Dinard’s, at the French-speaking Episcopal
Mission in Paris, on the waves of Fréquence Protestante radio, in the monasteries in which I
went on a retreat... A lot of people are surprised and piqued with curiosity when I tell them I am
Anglican. They are even more surprised when I tell them about our church: an Anglican, French-
speaking, international church… in New York! God loves to surprise!
I hope, God permitting, that I can visit you in New York soon. This trip will allow me to see
you again before the Diocese of New York sends me to Rome as a YASC (Young Adult Service
Corps) missionary starting in January. For a period of six months, I will have the joy and the
honor of serving the Episcopal Church and the Anglican Communion in Città eterna. My time
will be divided between the Church of Saint Paul-dans-les-Murs, an Episcopal parish which
has a receiving center for migrants, and the Anglican Center which, under the leadership of
Archbishop Ian Ernest, is to represent the Anglican Communion to the Holy See.
This new mission inspires me and I am very honored to be able to continue to work at my
humble level for communion between the various Churches, not only between our Diocese
of New York and the Episcopal and Anglican churches of the European continent, but also
between the Anglican Communion and the Roman Catholic Church. After having been
a stranger among strangers in our small French-speaking church, I will also be keen to put
myself at the service of those who, like those who founded our church and made it grow, had
to flee their country for a better life.
When I look at the year that has passed and the year ahead, I am happy to see that all the little gifts that God gives us, if we receive them and
give them in turn, bind us all together through beyond the kilometers and the centuries. All of these gifts, regardless of their market value,
weave the Church together. These small or large attentions, these thoughts, these prayers, are visible instruments of our communion. They are
constantly giving birth in our hands and in our hearts to this marvelous gift from God: “a son [will be] given to us. “(Isaiah 9: 6)
