3Message of the UEFA President On behalf of UEFA, it is my great pleasure to welcome you to Barcelona for the 6th UEFA-CAF Meridian Cup which, this year, is taking place in the year that the African Football Confedera- tion, the CAF, celebrates its golden jubilee. It also marks the tenth anniversary of the Meridian Project. It is a unique competition. More than any other, it symbolises solidarity and the embracing of other cultures. It is the cup of exchange and sharing, the cup of youth and hope. The Meridian Cup is a bridge between two continents united by a love of football but divided, unfortunately, by differing resources. UEFA currently has the means to pursue its ambitions, means that I believe, however, that it should share. As a game, and as the simplest and most beautiful game in the world, football has a social responsibility which it cannot ignore. Thanks to the tremendous welcome of the Spanish football association, the Catalan football association, FC Barcelona and the city of Barcelona and their first-class organisation of this event, Europe and Africa will have the opportunity to spend a few days getting to know each other better through a common love of football. In the time it takes to play two 90-minute matches, the simplicity of the game will push back borders, erase differences and break down barriers. And at the end of it all, there will be just one winner, to everyone's delight: football! Michel Platini UEFA President 4

Au nom de l’UEFA, j’ai le grand plaisir de vous souhaiter la bienvenue à Barcelone pour la 6ème
édition de la Coupe Méridien UEFA-CAF. Cette coupe, qui s’inscrit cette année dans le cadre du
cinquantenaire de la Confédération Africaine de Football et qui marque le 10ème anniversaire du
Projet Méridien, n’est pas une compétition comme une autre.
Elle symbolise plus que toute autre la solidarité et l’ouverture au monde. C’est la coupe de
l’échange et du partage. La coupe de la jeunesse et de l’espoir.
La Coupe Méridien représente un pont entre deux continents profondément épris de football
mais aux ressources malheureusement différentes. Si l’UEFA dispose aujourd’hui des moyens de
ses ambitions, je suis persuadé qu’il est de son devoir de les partager. Car si le football est un jeu,
le plus simple et le plus beau de tous les jeux, son succès lui confère une responsabilité sociale
dont il ne peut se détourner.
Aussi, grâce au formidable accueil et à la parfaite organisation de la Fédération Espagnole de
Football, de la Fédération Catalane de Football, du FC Barcelone et de la ville de Barcelone,
l’Europe et l’Afrique vont donc, l’espace de quelques jours, apprendre à mieux se connaitre grâce
à leur passion commune pour le ballon rond. Le temps de deux fois 90 minutes, la vérité simple
du terrain va repousser les frontières, effacer les différences, faire tomber bien des barrières.
Et au final il n’y aura qu’un seul vainqueur pour la plus grande joie de tous: le football!

5Grusswort des UEFA-Präsidenten Ich freue mich sehr, Sie alle im Namen der UEFA im wunderschönen Barcelona zur sechsten Ausgabe des UEFA/CAF-Meridian-Pokals willkommen zu heissen. Die diesjährige Ausgabe, die mit dem 50-jährigen Bestehen der Afrikanischen Fussballkonföderation zusammenfällt und selber im Zeichen des zehnten Geburtstags des Meridian-Projekts steht, ist kein Wettbewerb wie jeder andere. Mehr als jeder andere Wettbewerb symbolisiert der Meridian-Pokal Solidarität und Weltoffenheit. Er ist der Pokal des Austauschs und des Teilens. Er ist der Pokal der Jugend und der Hoffnung. Der Meridian-Pokal symbolisiert eine Brücke zwischen zwei Erdteilen, die den Fussball lieben, leider aber nicht über dieselben Ressourcen verfügen. Die UEFA verfügt heute über die Mittel, die für das Erreichen der von ihr angestrebten Ziele nötig sind. Ich bin der Überzeugung, dass es ihre Pflicht ist, diese Ressourcen zu teilen. Der Fussball ist zwar ein Spiel, das einfachste und schönste aller Spiele, doch sein Erfolg bringt eine gewisse soziale Verantwortung mit sich, der er sich nicht entziehen darf. Dank der wunderbaren Gastfreundschaft und der perfekten Organisation des Spanischen und Katalanischen Fussballverbandes sowie des FC Barcelona und der Stadt Barcelona werden Europa und Afrika in den nächsten Tagen also ihre Leidenschaft für das runde Leder teilen und sich näher kennen lernen. Während zweimal 90 Minuten wird das Geschehen auf dem Spielfeld Grenzen verwischen, Differenzen ausradieren und Hindernisse überwinden. Message of the CAF President
On behalf of CAF, it gives me great pleasure to welcome you all to the beautiful city of
Barcelona, It was exactly ten years ago, in 1997, that our two great football confederations,
UEFA and CAF, concluded a historic cooperation agreement which can be described beyond any
doubt as beneficial and particularly fruitful. Apart from that, 2007 will be marked by the 50th
anniversary of the African confederation, and this means that CAF will have dedicated one fifth
of its existence so far to this partnership project which is so important for the continent of Africa.
This project has already created significant improvements in Africa for numerous aspects of
football and has strengthened the links between our two confederations.
Thus, the partnership programme involving European and African associations with UEFA
expertise has so far benefited more than 80% of our member associations. Technical courses
for referees and youth coaches, development workshops for football administrators and also
significant aid in terms of equipment and infrastructure have been organised successfully to date.
In order to make our collaboration even more effective, it was decided recently to make slight
alterations to the content of the project. This will take the form of the direct participation of
African referee and coach instructors in UEFA conferences, aid distributed throughout the
continent of Africa, and a new format for the Meridian Cup.
Indeed, this event which we are attending with great pride and interest will be devoted to
developing the champions of tomorrow. This will be done through the matches, which for the
first time will take the form of a double confrontation between the best Under-18 players from
Africa and Europe, and through the parallel conference which involves the national youth
coaches of all 107 associations.
It is therefore with the utmost confidence that we are continuing this collaboration, in the
certainty that the adjustments made will have an even greater impact on the future. This is
because the UEFA/CAF Meridian Project, in addition to what it has already achieved, also enables
both our continents to bring their people closer together and to join forces in the fight against
racism.

Il y a exactement dix ans, en 1997, nos deux confédérations, l’UEFA et la CAF, concluaient un accord de coopération historique qui peut incontestablement être qualifié de bénéfique et fructueux. De plus, 2007 sera également marquée par la célébration du 50e anniversaire de la Confédération africaine de football. En d’autres termes, la CAF a consacré le cinquième de son existence à ce projet de partenariat qui est si important pour le continent africain. Ce projet a déjà apporté des améliorations significatives à l’Afrique dans de nombreux domaines et renforcé les liens entre nos deux confédérations. Ainsi, le programme de partenariat entre associations européennes et africaines, avec l’expertise de l’UEFA, a bénéficié jusqu’ici à plus de 80% de nos associations membres. Des cours de formation pour arbitres et entraîneurs juniors et des ateliers de formation pour administrateurs de football ont été organisés avec succès et une aide importante a été fournie en termes d’équipement et d’infrastructure. Afin de rendre notre coopération encore plus efficace, il a été décidé récemment de procéder à de légères modifications au contenu du projet. Ces modifications se traduiront par une participation directe d’arbitres et d’instructeurs d’entraîneurs africains aux conférences de l’UEFA, par une aide répartie sur tout le continent et par une nouvelle formule pour la Coupe Méridien. En effet, l’événement auquel nous assistons avec fierté et intérêt a pour but de promouvoir les champions de demain. Cette promotion se fera d’une part par les matches, qui pour la première fois prendront la forme d’une double confrontation entre les meilleurs joueurs M18 d’Afrique et d’Europe, et, d’autre part, par une conférence qui se tiendra en marge de ces matches et à laquelle participeront des entraîneurs nationaux juniors des 107 associations d’Europe et d’Afrique. C’est donc avec un sentiment de confiance en l’avenir que nous poursuivons cette coopération en étant convaincus que les ajustements effectués auront même un plus grand impact sur le futur. En plus de ce qui a été accompli, le projet Méridien UEFA/CAF permet à nos deux continents de rapprocher leurs peuples et d’unir leurs forces pour combattre le racisme. Ich freue mich sehr, Sie alle im Namen der CAF im wunderschönen Barcelona willkommen
zu heissen. Vor genau zehn Jahren sind unsere beiden grossartigen Konföderationen eine
historische Kooperationsvereinbarung eingegangen, die zweifelsohne als nützlich und äusserst
erfolgreich bezeichnet werden darf. Das Jahr 2007 ist für die CAF allein deshalb ein besonderes
Jahr, weil die afrikanische Konföderation ihr 50-jähriges Jubiläum feiert – die für den
afrikanischen Kontinent so wichtige Partnerschaft mit der UEFA hat also während eines Fünftels
der Geschichte der CAF Bestand gehabt. Dank des Projekts konnten bereits in zahlreichen
Bereichen des afrikanischen Fussballs bedeutende Forschritte erzielt werden und die
Beziehungen zwischen unseren beiden Organisationen haben sich vertieft.
Vom Partnerschaftsprogramm zwischen europäischen und afrikanischen Verbänden sowie der
Wissensvermittlung der UEFA konnten bisher über 80 % unserer Mitgliedsverbände profitieren.
Technische Kurse für Schiedsrichter und Juniorentrainer, Workshops für Fussball-Administratoren
sowie bedeutende Unterstützung in Form von Ausrüstung und Infrastruktur haben sich bis heute
bewährt. Um unsere Zusammenarbeit sogar noch erfolgreicher zu gestalten, wurde das
Meridian-Projekt vor kurzem leicht abgeändert: Afrikanische Schiedsrichter- und Trainerausbilder
werden nunmehr direkt an UEFA-Seminaren teilnehmen, die Hilfeleistungen werden auf den
gesamten afrikanischen Kontinent ausgeweitet und der Meridian-Pokal wird nach einem neuen
Spielmodus ausgetragen.
Die Veranstaltung, an der wir mit grossem Stolz und Interesse teilnehmen, dient der Ausbildung
der Stars von morgen. Dies wird zum einen auf dem Spielfeld, wo erstmals zwei Begegnungen
zwischen den besten U18-Spielern Afrikas und Europas ausgetragen werden, zum anderen im
Rahmen der Meridian-Konferenz geschehen, bei der die Junioren-Nationaltrainer sämtlicher 107
Verbände vertreten sein werden.
Wir setzen unsere Zusammenarbeit somit voller Zuversicht fort und sind überzeugt, dass sich
die vorgenommenen Anpassungen in Zukunft auszahlen werden. Neben seinen bisherigen
Errungenschaften bietet das UEFA/CAF-Meridian-Projekt unseren beiden Kontinenten nämlich
die Gelegenheit, näher zusammenzurücken und sich im Kampf gegen Rassismus zu verbünden.

9Message of the Spanish FA President Spain will host the latest edition of the Meridian Cup, a competition that has been held every other year since 1997. As President of the Royal Spanish Football Federation, I am delighted that Barcelona has been selected as the venue for this prestigious event. The tournament offers the enticing prospect of witnessing some of the best young footballers from Europe and Africa in action. Many of these young players will very soon be competing at the highest levels of our game. The Meridian Cup in Barcelona will not only maintain the competitive spirit inherent in all football tournaments but will also promote the values of unity, solidarity, respect and friendship that result from working together as a team and which will be experienced here by young players from different countries. In addition to this spirit between the players, there will also be an opportunity for coaches from Africa and Europe to participate in a conference where they can share their experiences and ideas. I would like to offer my sincere thanks to UEFA and CAF for granting Barcelona the privilege of hosting this wonderful football event. Of course I must also express my gratitude to the authorities – the Generalitat de Catalunya and the Barcelona City Council – for their cooperation, time and enthusiasm in making the new Meridian Cup a reality. I must also thank the Catalan Football Federation and FC Barcelona for their involvement in the project from the start, making their facilities available and working enthusiastically to ensure that the Meridian Cup 2007 is a success. L’Espagne accueillera l’édition 2007 de la Coupe Méridien, une compétition qui se déroule tous
les deux ans depuis 1997. En tant que président de la Fédération espagnole de football, je suis
heureux que la ville de Barcelone ait été désignée pour accueillir ce prestigieux événement.
Le tournoi nous permettra de voir à l’?uvre certains des meilleurs jeunes footballeurs d’Europe et
d’Afrique. Plusieurs de ces jeunes talents évolueront bientôt au plus haut niveau.
La Coupe Méridien à Barcelone ne maintiendra pas seulement l’esprit d’équipe inhérent à
tous les tournois de football mais sera également l’occasion de promouvoir les valeurs d’unité,
de solidarité, de respect et d’amitié qui résultent du travail en équipe et qui seront mises en
pratique ici par de jeunes joueurs de différents pays. Outre cet esprit que l’on veut encourager
entre les joueurs, le tournoi sera également une opportunité pour les entraîneurs africains et
européens de participer à une conférence où ils pourront échanger leurs expériences et leurs
idées.
J’aimerais ici exprimer mes sincères remerciements à l’UEFA et à la CAF pour avoir donné à
Barcelone le privilège d’accueillir ce magnifique événement de football. J’exprime également
ma gratitude aux autorités – la Généralité de Catalogne et le Conseil municipal de Barcelone –
pour avoir fait de la nouvelle Coupe Méridien une réalité grâce à leur coopération, au temps
consacré et à leur enthousiasme. J’aimerais enfin remercier la Fédération catalane de football et
le FC Barcelone pour leur engagement, depuis le début, dans le projet, en mettant à disposition
leurs installations et en contribuant avec enthousiasme à faire de la Coupe Méridien une
réussite.

11Grusswort des Präsidenten des Spanischen Fussballverbandes Spanien wird die jüngste Ausgabe des Meridian-Pokals ausrichten, eines Wettbewerbs, der seit 1997 alle zwei Jahre stattfindet. Als Präsident des Spanischen Fussballverbands freue ich mich sehr darüber, dass Barcelona als Austragungsort für diese prestigeträchtige Veranstaltung gewählt wurde. Die beiden Spiele bieten die verlockende Aussicht, einige der besten jungen Fussballer Europas und Afrikas in Aktion zu sehen. Viele dieser Talente werden unser Spiel sehr bald auf höchster Ebene praktizieren. Der Meridian-Pokal in Barcelona wird allerdings nicht nur im Zeichen des mit allen Fussballverans- taltungen einhergehenden Wettkampfgeistes stehen, sondern auch Werte wie Einheit, Solidarität, Respekt und Freundschaft vermitteln – Werte, die entstehen, wenn man als Team zusammenarbeitet, was hier für viele junge Spieler aus diversen Ländern der Fall sein wird. Neben ihnen werden auch Trainer aus Afrika und Europa zusammenkommen und die Gelegenheit erhalten, an einer Konferenz teilzunehmen, bei der sie Erfahrungen und Ideen austauschen können. Ich möchte mich bei der UEFA und der CAF herzlich bedanken, dass sie Barcelona als Austragungsort dieser wunderbaren Veranstaltung gewählt haben. Mein Dank geht auch an die Behörden – die Generalitat de Catalunya und die Stadtregierung von Barcelona. Dank ihrer Kooperation, ihrer Verfügbarkeit und ihrem Enthusiasmus ist der Meridian-Pokal zustande gekommen. Schliesslich möchte ich auch dem Katalanischen Fussballverband und dem FC Barce- lona danken, die sich von Beginn an am Projekt beteiligten, ihre Einrichtungen zur Verfügung stellten und mit Enthusiasmus darauf hinarbeiteten, den Meridian-Pokal 2007 zu einem Erfolg zu machen.
