DIRECTEUR ARTISTIQUE. Fort de votre soutien, récompensé
par de nombreux prix et composé d’un groupe renouvelé
de musiciens passionnés et virtuoses, nous regardons
avec optimisme et ambition l’aube de cette nouvelle
décennie en voulant vous offrir le meilleur des chefs-
d’œuvre des 17e et 18e siècles, poursuivant en cela
l’œuvre de notre directrice artistique fondatrice
Claire Guimond. Notre programmation vous présente
des nouveaux noms chez Arion, comme le violoniste
Julien Chauvin, le bassoniste Peter Whelan, les
complices de Café Zimmermann Pablo Valetti et Céline
Frisch ainsi que Franck-Emmanuel Comte et Heather
Newhouse dans un programme largement composé
d’œuvres de compositrices françaises du 18e siècle.
Nous ouvrirons également en grand cette saison
anniversaire avec nos complices du Studio de musique
ancienne de Montréal, dans un grand concert à la Maison
symphonique, une première pour notre orchestre !
Je vous propose une saison riche et variée, qui allie ce

ARION’S 2020-2021 SEASON WILL MARK OUR 40TH ANNIVERSARY
AS WELL AS MY FIRST SEASON AS ARTISTIC DIRECTOR.
Strengthened by your support, rewarded for our concerts
and recordings, and composed of a renewed body of
passionate and virtuosic musicians, we look upon this
new decade with optimism and ambition, aiming to offer
you the best music from the 17th and 18th centuries,
pursuing in doing so the work of Arion’s founding Artistic
Director, Claire Guimond. Our season’s programs
feature new guest artists such as violinist Julien
Chauvin, bassoonist Peter Whelan, Café Zimmermann’s
tandem Pablo Valetti and Céline Frisch, as well as
Franck-Emmanuel Comte and Heather Newhouse in
a program largely built on the works of French women
composers. We will also open this anniversary season
with our artistic partners of the Studio de musique
ancienne de Montréal in a grand concert at the Maison
symphonique, a first for Arion. I offer you a rich and
varied season, a fusion between what you have come
to know and enjoy from us and new ideas which will,
I am sure, reach your heart! Arion would not be complete
without you, dear audience, and we will strive to write
the next chapters of our history with the widest possible
audience at our side. I wish you a wonderful season in

ORCHESTRE BAROQUE Orchestra
FR Arion Orchestre Baroque, fondé en 1981 à Montréal,
fait figure de proue dans le monde de la musique ancienne
sur instruments d’époque au Québec et au Canada.
Depuis près de quarante ans, la clarté et la fraîcheur
des interprétations d’Arion, la finesse de ses lectures
d’œuvres baroques choisies et variées ont régulièrement
été saluées par la critique. Un souci constant du détail
a placé l’orchestre, mené par la vision artistique éclairée
de la fondatrice et flûtiste Claire Guimond, parmi les
meilleures formations de musique ancienne reconnues
en Amérique du Nord et à travers le monde. L’Orchestre
propose une prestigieuse série de concerts à Montréal
avec le concours de plus d’une vingtaine de musiciens et
la participation de chefs et solistes invités de renommée
internationale. Gagnant de plusieurs prix et bourses,
Arion se produit régulièrement en tournées conséquentes
au Québec, au Canada, aux États-Unis, au Mexique, en
Asie et en Europe. Arion compte une impressionnante
discographie de 33 titres en formation de chambre ou
d’orchestre distribuée par les réseaux internationaux et
sur le web.
EN Founded in 1981 in Montreal, Arion Baroque Orchestra is
now a cornerstone in the world of early music on period
instruments in Quebec and Canada. Over the last 40 years,
the clarity and freshness of Arion’s interpretations have
often been praised and the delicacy of its readings
of well-chosen and varied works has never wavered.
Constant attention to detail has earned the orchestra,
led by the enlightened artistic vision of flutist and
founder Claire Guimond, a place among the most
renowned early music ensembles in North America and
throughout the world. The Orchestra offers a prestigious
Montreal concert series featuring more than twenty
musicians and the participation of world-renowned
guest conductors. Arion has been awarded many prizes
and grants, and tours regularly in the United States,
Mexico, Europe and Japan, as well as Quebec and Canada.
Arion now boasts an impressive discography of 33 titles
internationally distributed.

FR Aux grandes occasions, les grands moyens ! Pour fêter de
belle façon les 40 ans d’Arion, avec la complicité renouvelée
du Studio de musique ancienne de Montréal, orchestre
et chœur se déploieront pour la première fois ensemble
dans la somptueuse acoustique de la Maison symphonique
de Montréal. Mené par le nouveau directeur artistique
d’Arion Orchestre Baroque, Mathieu Lussier, le concert
présentera des œuvres festives de grande beauté. En plus
du Psaume latin de Telemann Deus, judicium tuum, qui fit
en son temps un énorme tabac à Paris, l’on se délectera
des quatre Coronation Anthems et de la célèbre Musique
pour les feux d’artifice royaux de l’incontournable Handel.
EN Such an occasion commands an exceptional event! Arion is
delighted to celebrate the opening of its 40th anniversary
season with its first performance in the ideal setting of
Montreal’s Maison symphonique, partnering once again with
the beautiful voices of the Studio de musique ancienne de
Montréal. Led by Arion Baroque Orchestra’s new Artistic
Director, Mathieu Lussier, the concert will present a choice
pick of festive works. In addition to Telemann’s Latin Psalm
Deus, judicium tuum, which in its time won the hearts of
Parisian audiences, the hall will resound to the wonderful
strains of Handel’s four Coronation Anthems and celebrated
Music for the Royal Fireworks.

FR Quand Handel arrive à Dublin, en Irlande, à la fin 1741, il a
la chance de pouvoir compter sur des musiciens rattachés
à la « Irish State Musick », l’orchestre du château de Dublin.
Ce sont eux qui participeront à la création du Messie, et
c’est en les côtoyant que Handel a pu prendre le pouls du
riche milieu musical irlandais. Ce programme fera revivre
des musiques de ce creuset fertile, où traditions anglaises,
françaises et italiennes se rencontrent. À cette occasion,
Arion aura le bonheur de recevoir pour la première fois au
pays le talentueux bassoniste, claveciniste et chef irlandais
Peter Whelan, un musicien « aussi fringant qu’il se puisse
trouver dans le monde de la musique ancienne en Irlande ».

EN When Handel arrived in Dublin at the end of 1741, he was
able to count on the services of musicians belonging to
the “Irish State Musick,” as the orchestra of Dublin Castle
was known. They were the ones that took part in the premiere
performances of his Messiah, and it was in their company
that Handel was able to gauge Ireland’s rich musical life.
Our program will bring to life works from this melting pot
of English, French, and Italian musical traditions. For the
occasion, Arion is pleased to welcome for the first time
in Canada the talented Irish bassoonist, harpsichordist,
and conductor Peter Whelan, “as exciting a live wire as
Ireland has produced in the world of period performance”

FR Sous la direction de Julien Chauvin — l’un des violonistes
les plus en vue de la scène baroque actuelle, fondateur de
l’orchestre parisien Le Concert de la Loge —, Arion vous
propose un menu musical qui lorgne du côté de l’époque
prérévolutionnaire. Dans les quelques décennies précédant
le grand bouleversement, des partitions de Haydn circulent
abondamment à Paris, dont des concertos et des symphonies
qui orneront de leurs trouvailles de nombreux concerts.
En même temps, des compositeurs français comme Guénin
et Rigel établissent leur réputation en parallèle à l’illustre
Autrichien, en offrant au public parisien des œuvres qui
leur valent la faveur de cet auditoire exigeant. Nous sommes
heureux d’accueillir, en tandem avec le chef violoniste,
la soliste invitée Mélisande McNabney, étoile montante
du clavecin et du piano-forte sur la scène canadienne.
EN Conducted by Julien Chauvin, one of today’s most sought-
after baroque violinists and founder of the Parisian orchestra
Le Concert de la Loge, Arion presents fascinating works from
the years preceding the French Revolution. During those
few decades, Haydn’s scores circulated widely in Paris,
including concertos and symphonies which enthused the
city’s concertgoers. Meanwhile, French composers such
as Guénin and Rigel established their own well-deserved
reputation, writing works that garnered praise from
demanding Parisian audiences. Sharing the solos with
our guest conductor-violinist, we are happy to welcome
the Canadian rising-star harpsichordist and fortepianist

FR La musique de Bach et de ses fils inspire et rassemble
autant les amateurs de musique que les interprètes.
Lorsque Jean-Sébastien dirigeait au Café Zimmermann de
Leipzig son désormais célèbre Collegium musicum, il avait
à présenter à un public avisé mais avide de nouveautés une
quantité d’œuvres impressionnante. Pour ce faire, il puisait
non seulement dans sa propre production, mais aussi dans
celle de ses talentueux fils, qui malgré l’ascendant du père ont
pu s’exprimer avec une voix qui leur était propre. Venez vous
détendre comme si vous y étiez, en écoutant des concertos
et symphonies de la famille Bach interprétés et dirigés par
les codirecteurs de l’ensemble français Café Zimmermann,
la claveciniste Céline Frisch et le violoniste Pablo Valetti.
EN The music of Bach and his sons inspires and connects both
performers and music lovers. When Johann Sebastian led his
Collegium musicum at Leipzig’s Zimmermann Coffeehouse,
he felt the need to present a great variety of works to satisfy
the exacting tastes of the patrons for new and entertaining
musical fare. To meet the challenge, he not only chose among
his own works, but put to good use those of his sons whose
individual creative voices were offered to stand out. So come

FR Ce rendez-vous consacré à la musique baroque française
présentera pour la première fois au Canada le travail effectué
par le claveciniste et chef français Franck-Emmanuel Comte
et la soprano canadienne Heather Newhouse, portant sur les
œuvres écrites par des femmes compositrices au 18e siècle.
Peu d’entre elles ont pu en leur temps jouir d’une réputation
à la mesure de celle d’Élisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre
sous l’Ancien Régime. Mais dans un anonymat que recouvre
souvent un pseudonyme, à l’époque des musiques glorieuses
d’un Rameau, ces femmes ont laissé des pages dignes
d’admiration. Il est grand temps de les redécouvrir !
EN Devoted to music of the French Baroque, this program presents
for the first time in Canada the investigations by the French
harpsichordist and conductor Franck-Emmanuel Comte
and the Canadian soprano Heather Newhouse of works by
18th-century women composers. Very few in their own time
were as celebrated as Élisabeth-Claude Jacquet de La Guerre
under the Ancien Régime. Yet often concealed by pseudonyms,
these women managed in the heyday of Rameau’s glorious
music to leave behind works well worth our admiration.
