MONOQUINI, © MÉLANIE GRIBINSKI Le cinéaste indépendant avait animé plusieurs films pour Frank Zappa. Toute son œuvre
évoque un morphing sans fin produisant un effet hallucinogène. Bruce Bickford avait été
membre du jury au Festival d’Annecy en 2000.
Né en 1947 à Seattle, Bickford est marqué enfant par le Peter Pan de Disney. Mais c'est
un film de Harryhausen qui déclenche sa vocation. À dix-sept ans, il filme les premières
mésaventures de ses personnages. Après l'armée, Tree et Last Battle on Flat Earth lui
apportent un début de notoriété.
Puis il a une nouvelle révélation. Envoûté par 200 Motels, consacré à Frank Zappa, il s'envole
vers la Californie. L'icône du rock flashe sur le style de l'animateur ; s'ensuivent six ans et
demi d'une fructueuse quoique orageuse collaboration. Grâce à Baby Snakes, notamment,

LEISURE CLASS PRODUCTIONS Bickford connaît le succès. Il n'en retrouve pas moins, dès le début des années 1980, sa vie
discrète à Seattle.

GUILLAUMOND Ses films emblématiques, réalisés en pâte à modeler, sont sans doute Prometheus’ Garden
CITIA et CAS'L'. Si cette technique fait la réputation de Bickford, il exploite aussi le papier découpé,
le cellulo et surtout le tracé, comme dans The Comic that Frenches Your Mind ou Attila. Ses
tiroirs débordaient en outre de projets de romans graphiques et de scénarios.
Les mondes de Bickford sont cauchemardesques. Les scènes de violence se succèdent, des

personnages miniatures ou des visages surgissent et se métamorphosent inlassablement en
PROGRAMME monstres. L'auteur est un éternel intranquille – une enfance sous le maccarthysme et une
blessure au Vietnam expliquent sans doute bien des choses.

take off for California. There the rock icon fell head over heels for the animator’s style, and he and Bickford embarked on six and
a half years of a stormy but productive work relationship. Success crowned Bickford’s movies, especially thanks to Baby Snakes.
Nonetheless, in the early 80s he decided to return to a more low-key life in Seattle.
His most emblematic films – made with modelling clay – are Prometheus’ Garden and CAS'L'. Although this technique built
Bickford’s reputation, he also worked with paper cut-outs, cels and especially outline drawing, exemplified in The Comic that
Frenches Your Mind and Attila. Plus, his desk drawers were brimming with projects for graphic novels and scenarios.
Bickford’s worlds are nightmare worlds. Scenes of violence follow one after the other, while miniature characters and faces loom
onto the screen, turning ceaselessly into monstrosities. He was an eternally tormented author, given his childhood spent under
McCarthy and his Vietnam wounds.
Working lone wolf-style, wearing surgical loupes, he was a stickler for detail (the smaller the better) and lived and breathed to
create. He succumbed to a heart attack at age 72.

Roger Mainwood (1953-2018)
ROGER MAINWOOD
La carrière de Roger Mainwood est intimement liée à l’adaptation cinématographique
de l’univers du célèbre auteur et illustrateur Raymond Briggs.
On se souviendra de la présentation à Annecy, en 2017, de son long métrage Ethel &
Ernest, évocation sensible de la vie des parents de Raymond Briggs, de leur première
rencontre au cours de la décennie 1920 jusqu’à leur décès une cinquantaine d’années
plus tard. C’était la première réalisation de Mainwood pour le cinéma, lui qui avait dirigé
des épisodes de quelques séries, dont Stressed Eric (2000) et The World of Peter Rabbit
and Friends (1994).
Auparavant, Mainwood s’était familiarisé avec l’univers de Briggs en collaborant à titre

Étudiant au Royal College of Art, il quitte l’école pour se joindre à l’équipe du studio Halas
& Batchelor, où il est d’abord animateur pour le long vidéoclip que John Halas réalise sur
la pièce Autobahn du groupe allemand Kraftwerk. On le retrouve ensuite animateur pour
Métal Hurlant de Gerald Potterton, puis ce sera The Snowman…
Roger Mainwood est décédé d’un cancer le 20 septembre 2018. Il venait d’avoir 65 ans.

We fondly recall the 2017 Annecy presentation of his feature film Ethel and Ernest, a tender
account of the lives of Raymond Briggs’ parents, from their first encounter in the 1920s until
their deaths fifty years on. This was Mainwood’s directing debut for cinema, he who had
directed episodes of a number of series, among which Stressed Eric (2000) and The World of
PROGRAMME Peter Rabbit and Friends (1994).

Børge Ring (1921-2018)

On retient de cet artisan disparu en décembre 2018 son humanisme, son empathie, son
affection pour les récits familiaux, une animation virtuose et un sens du mouvement
souple, agile et fluide.
Né en 1921 à Ribe, au Danemark, le jeune Børge étudie d’abord la contrebasse et la guitare. Il
découvre le cinéma en voyant sa sœur accompagner des films muets au piano. Les cartoons
de Mickey et de Félix piquent alors sa curiosité. Au début des années 1940, il est musicien de
jazz, une activité qu’il pratiquera toute sa vie.
L’animation, quant à elle, sera sa passion. Avec deux collègues, il ouvre à Copenhague peu

auquel se joint notamment Kaj Pindal. Vers 1960, il est embauché par le studio Marten
Toonder à Amsterdam, où il continue à se perfectionner. Il signe des bandes dessinées
MARCO DE BLOIS dans les années 1970 et 1980 tout en collaborant à des productions telles que It’s the Great
Programmateur- Pumpkin, Charlie Brown ; Astérix et Cléopâtre ; Heavy Metal ; et La Ballade des Dalton.

Relatively late in life he turned toward directing, and his first film Oh My Darling (1978) hit the screens when he was 57. He finished
Anna & Bella (1985) at age 64 and Run of the Mill (1999) at 78. He also performed the music for each of his movies. The first two
films were tremendous hits: Oh My Darling was nominated for an Oscar while Anna & Bella allowed him to carry off that golden
statuette. His movie Run of the Mill won the UNICEF prize at the Annecy festival.

Rosto (1969-2019)
ROSTO
Rosto c’était d’abord un nom, qui claquait comme ses films ; un visage, un look, une
voix, une présence qui, par son talent, sa générosité et sa disponibilité, aura marqué
profondément le milieu de l’animation.
Rosto, scénariste, réalisateur, animateur, directeur artistique et producteur de ses œuvres,
mais aussi auteur-compositeur et interprète, fut l’un des pionniers de l’hybridation des
techniques, de la websérie animée, des projets 360° mix-trans-machin médias, sans qu’il ne
l’ait jamais prémédité ou verbalisé tant ces étiquettes seraient réductrices et vulgaires pour
décrire un univers si foisonnant, cohérent et personnel.

À l’ère du tout-numérique, ses films faisaient partie des rares où l’on se demandait encore
comment ils étaient fabriqués. Des œuvres visionnaires et inclassables, des expériences
sensorielles et sonores uniques, qui ne laissaient personne indifférent.

rocker, un ange déguisé en punk à la classe sans pareille qui aura marqué chaque personne
PROGRAMME qu’il aura croisée.

Nous devions commencer cette année la création d’une performance audiovisuelle live
Rosto avec des hologrammes, poursuivre l’écriture d’un spin-off du Monstre de Nix, mais surtout
Pays-Bas, France, lancer la production de son premier long métrage, enfin prêt à démarrer après des années

verbalized such, because those labels would have been too simplistic and vulgar for describing a landscape that was so luxuriant,

coherent and personal.
In the age of all-digital, his films were among the uncommon few where viewers still wondered how on earth they’d been made.
Visionary and unclassifiable works, unique sensorial and acoustic experiences that left no one indifferent.
His last opus, Reruns, (finished well before he learned of the disease which would strike him down) is highly symptomatic: an
existential philosophical farce combined with a "documentary on his dreams" mingling his childhood memories with nightmarish
visions of his own demise, mixing green-screen live footage, archives, Super 8, 2D-3D animation, puppetry and motion capture… a
totally-original and complex cocktail…
But not only was he a genius of images, a composer of talent and a world leader in animation, he was most especially a rare soul, a
heart of gold sheathed in a black leather jacket, an angel disguised as a punk of infinite class – someone who would have impacted
every person he ever met.
This year we were to begin crafting a live audiovisual performance with holograms, continue writing a spin-off of Monster of Nix,
but most especially launch the production of his first feature film, finally ready to start after years of drafts and research, and which
promised to be an immense visual, aural and emotional slap. Fate had decided otherwise.

Jon Schnepp (1967-2018)
JON SCHNEPP
John Schnepp a eu plusieurs casquettes dans le domaine de l'animation. Apprécié de tous,
ANTONIO il était aussi doué d'une grande fantaisie verbale.

Titmouse
Jon Schnepp était un producteur, réalisateur, comédien voix, éditeur, auteur, dessinateur,
animateur et directeur photo américain.
Schnepp était connu pour le documentaire The Death of "Superman Lives": What Happened?,
qu'il a écrit et réalisé. Il a aussi réalisé des épisodes de Metalocalypse, The Venture Bros.
et une séquence de The ABC's of Death. Il était également connu pour son travail avec le
site web et la chaîne YouTube Collider, où il apparaissait régulièrement comme l'un des
chroniqueurs sur les sections Collider Movie Talk, Collider Nightmares, et comme le
présentateur principal de la série Collider Heroes.
Mais il était encore plus célèbre pour être un homme apprécié de tous, avec un étrange et
merveilleux charisme et de nombreuses trouvailles verbales, comme : "SKRIMLOR, Chibbetz !,
GnAAAAAAAAAAAA Aga Aga Aga" ou "AKRILEX FENZU giiiiiii" et même "ZOAST Nadex !"... sans
oublier son chef-d'oeuvre : "ELAH" !

Jon Schnepp was an American producer, director, voice actor, editor, writer, cartoonist, animator,
and cinematographer.
Schnepp was known for the documentary film The Death of "Superman Lives": What
Happened? which he directed and wrote. He also directed episodes of Metalocalypse, The
Venture Bros. and a segment of The ABC's of Death. He was also known for his work with
Collider, appearing regularly as a panellist on the site's Collider Movie Talk, Collider Nightmares,
and Collider Heroes series, the latter of which he hosted.

But he was most famous for being a beloved man with a strange and wonderful charisma and
Metalocalypse inventing many words like: "SKRIMLOR, Chibbetz!, GnAAAAAAAAAAAA Aga Aga Aga" or
"The Curse
of Dethklok" "AKRILEX FENZU giiiiiii" and even "ZOAST Nadex!", and his masterpiece: "ELAH"!

Marek Serafiński (1954-2017)
MAREK SERAFIŃSKI
Réalisateur, producteur et amateur d’absurde, Marek Serafiński présidait la section
Cinéma d’animation de la Polish Filmmakers Association.
Marek Serafiński était diplômé de la faculté des arts graphiques de l’Académie des beaux-
arts de Varsovie, où il s’était spécialisé dans le cinéma animé. Il était également diplômé,
dans cette discipline, de l’École nationale de cinéma de Łódź. Depuis 2002, Marek Serafiński
présidait la section Cinéma d’animation de la Polish Filmmakers Association.
Il réalisait lui-même les scénarios, la planification visuelle et l’animation de ses films. Il
aimait aborder des sujets sociopolitiques, tout en donnant à ses films une forme surréaliste
et grotesque. L’humour absurde y côtoyait la tragédie et l’horreur.
ROK, THE SERAFINSKI FILM STUDIO
Son univers, oscillant entre rêve et réalité, de même que certaines caractéristiques
spécifiques de ses animations résultaient de sa technique de réalisation : unique en son

BOSEK- genre, celle-ci combinait photographie et gravure. Il partait d’un ensemble de photos
SERAFIŃSKA d’acteurs, les travaillait graphiquement, puis enregistrait le mouvement qu’il recréait ainsi
lui-même.
Il créa le Studio Serafiński en 2004 où, il produisit les courts métrages animés de nombreux
artistes, ainsi qu’Agatha, une série d’animation pour les enfants. La filmographie de Marek
Serafiński inclut notamment : Concrete (1986), primé à Cracovie ; The Concert (1987),

recompensé à Huesca ; La Course (1990), Grand Prix à Leipzig et prix spécial à Annecy. Marek
est décédé durant la production de son dernier film Idol (2018), qui fut achevé par Grzegorz
Koncewicz.

The atmosphere bordering on the edges of reality and dream, as well as certain specific animated

film characteristics resulted from his unique directing technique, which combined photography with engravings. The starting point
was a set of photographs of actors. The author then processed them graphically and created his own score of movement.
He established his own Serafiński Studio in 2004 and as producer was responsible for a number of short animated films by various
artists as well as Agatha, an animated series for children. Marek Serafiński’s filmography includes, among others: Concrete (1986),
winner for animation in Krakow; The Concert (1987), award winner in Huesca; La Course (1990), Grand Prix in Leipzig and Special
Award in Annecy. Since Marek passed away during the production, his last film Idol (2018) was finished by Grzegorz Koncewicz.

Will Vinton (1947-2018)
WILL VINTON
Avec la mort de Will Vinton, survenue en octobre 2018, c’est une figure légendaire de la
stop-motion qui disparaît.
Né en Oregon en 1947, diplômé de Berkeley, Will Vinton s’initie à l’animation de pâte à
modeler en collaborant avec Bob Gardiner au début de la décennie 1970. Tandis que Gardiner
se consacre à l’animation et à la sculpture des personnages, Vinton fait montre d’une grande
habileté technique, manipulant la caméra et réglant les éclairages. Les deux hommes
terminent Closed Mondays en 1974, grâce auquel ils remportent un Oscar l’année suivante.
Bien installé à Portland, en Oregon, Vinton fonde ensuite son propre studio, où il réalise
notamment Rip Van Winkle (1978), The Creation (1981), The Great Cognito (1982) ainsi que
THE GREAT COGNITO, WILL VINTON le long métrage Les Aventures de Mark Twain (1985), véritable tour de force technique. Le

En 2002, Vinton perd le contrôle financier de son studio, qui fermera bientôt ses portes pour
laisser la place à Laika, studio fondé en 2005. Son dernier passage à Annecy remonte à 2011,

Born in Oregon, 1947, and graduated from U.C. Berkeley, Will Vinton began to experiment on
modeling-clay animation with Bob Gardiner in the early 1970s. While Gardiner focused more on
animation and character sculpting, Vinton proved himself to be a technical ace, manning the
camera and adjusting the lighting. The two men finished Closed Mondays in 1974, and went on to
win an Oscar for it the following year.
PROGRAMME Comfortably settled in Portland, Oregon, Vinton then founded his own studio where, among
others, he directed Rip Van Winkle (1978), The Creation (1981), The Great Cognito (1982) as well
The Great Cognito as the feature film The Adventures of Mark Twain (1985), an amazing technical feat. The term

"claymation", designating animation made with clay figures, was soon to become his trademark.

In 2002, Vinton lost the financial control of his studio, soon to close down to make way for Laika, a studio founded in 2005. His last
visit to the Annecy Festival dates back to 2011, when he was a member of the graduation film jury.
