Comprendre les types d’enseignement français
Le français est la deuxième langue étrangère la plus étudiée dans le système éducatif américain, après
l’espagnol. Il existe plusieurs méthodes d'enseignement du français, qui varient fortement en fonction
de l'objectif recherché et du niveau des élèves par classe.
DUAL LANGUAGE
Ce terme générique désigne tous les programmes
visant à rendre les élèves bilingues et bi-lettrés.
Quelle que soit la classe, 50% (ou plus) des ma-
tières y sont enseignées en français.
ONE-WAY FRENCH IMMERSION
Ces programmes d’immersion en langue étrangère
s’adressent aux élèves américains anglophones
sans connaissance préalable du français. Ils ac-
ceuillent aussi les élèves francophones, bien que
ceux-ci ne représentent souvent qu'une minorité
dans les classes.
TWO-WAY FRENCH IMMERSION
Largement répandus en Louisiane, ces programmes
mêlent des Américains anglophones et des franco-
phones en proportions presque égales (aucun des
deux groupes ne doit représenter plus des deux-
tiers de la classe).
PARTIAL IMMERSION
L’immersion en langue française peut être totale ou
partielle. Dans les programmes de partial immer-
sion, la part de langue française est très forte dans
les premiers niveaux (90% des enseignements). Elle
décroît progressivement pour n’atteindre plus que
50% en fin de premier degré. Dans le cas d’une
immersion totale, les cours sont intégralement en
français.

IN THE KNOW
Understanding the types of French language instruction
French is the second most studied foreign language in the American education system, just behind Spanish.
There are several different types of French language instruction, all of which vary in important ways, from
the programs' educational goals to the linguistic make-up of the students.
DUAL LANGUAGE
This generic term refers to all programs whose
goals are bilingualism and biliteracy. Regard-
less of the grade, 50% or more of all classes are
taught in French.
ONE-WAY FRENCH IMMERSION
These foreign-language immersion programs are
the most popular and widest available, mainly
aimed at native English-speaking students with no
background in French. They also serve French na-
tive speakers, although they usually represent a
small proportion of the class body.
TWO-WAY FRENCH IMMERSION
These programs are widely available in Louisi-
ana, and enroll an almost equal proportion of na-
tive English speakers and Francophones. Neither
group can make up more than two thirds of the
program.
PARTIAL IMMERSION
French-language immersion can be total or par-
tial. In partial immersion programs, the vast ma-
jority of classes are taught in French for the first
grades (up to 90%). This percentage decreases
gradually until it reaches 50%, generally around
third grade. In total immersion programs, all class-
