7The Past Tense (with avoir)
To say that something happened or has happened you need the
same past tense in French. It is made up of 3 parts

To form past participles of regular Common irregular past
verbs participles

ER verbs - knock off the ER and add é

IR verbs - knock off the IR and add I

Some verbs take être instead of avoir in the past tense (so part 2 is
different) this list must be learnt.

To say it was and there was the rules are different to what
you have learnt (there’s another past tense called the
imperfect tense that you will learn next year).

To say that something is going to happen or will happen in French
you need the future tense which also has three parts.

Instructions
• Look at the photo during the preparation period.
• Make any notes you wish to.
• Your teacher will then ask you questions about the photo and
about topics related to travel and tourism.
Your teacher will ask you the following three questions and then
two more questions which you have not prepared.
