"As we say in The Royal Regiment – Good Shooting! I much enjoyed and was greatly informed by my reading of the latest issue of The Canadian Gunner News. There is a great deal happening across the Regiment on all five lines of operation: Force Development & Employment; Leadership Succession; Nurturing the Regimental Family; Connecting with Canadians and Celebrating Our Heritage and this issue illuminated examples from each. I am especially pleased by the Gunner News’s perhaps incidental, but none the less valuable utility in linking networks i.e. bringing together, for instance, readers of Barrage, the Vancouver Artillery Association News and the Bytown Gunners WOs’ and Sgts’ Association News. I am sure this will lead to cross-fertilization of ideas and joint efforts in support of our common cause. https://outlook.live.com/owa/?path=/mail/inbox/rp 2/29

The challenge for the rest of us is to get the readership numbers up, especially amongst serving members." Jim Selbie Brigadier-General (Ret’d) | Brigadier-général (ret) J.J. Selbie, OMM, CD Colonel Commandant | Colonel commandant The Royal Regiment of Canadian Artillery | Le Régiment royal de l’Artillerie canadienne "Merci pour une publication très intéressante et bien montée." Major Pierre Marceau "One of the things that I would like to see is an Events Calendar. 2 RCHA is to have a Change of Command this year; when is it? For people to be able to react to calendar events they need to be listed a minimum of 60 days before the event. Master Warrant Officer / Adjudant Maître (Bruno) Plamondon Battery Sergeant Major 127 Bty, 4th Artillery Regiment (General Support) Royal Canadian Artillery "Hi Catherine, I thought it’s a great idea. A number of military journals which I read have similar fora, the US Naval Institute Proceedings Journal calls theirs, “Nobody Asked me, but...” We could have a similar section, with an artillery type title: The Gun Pit, Harassing Fire, Counter-Battery, etc." P.J. 5/31/2018 Mail - cdnig19@hotmail.com Watch/Visionnez 38 ATG Participates in Ex AFRICAN LION 18 by Captain Jon Cober, Operations Officer Exercise AFRICAN LION is an annual exercise run by African Command (AFRICOM) to allow US partner nations an opportunity to train and operate in a multi- national, joint, combined environment. This year it took place in the month of April in the city of Agadir, Morocco. Eleven partner nations participated including the UK, France, Spain, the USA, Morocco, Tunisia and many other nations including Canada. The UK had the lead in the exercise as they brought the majority of their staff from 4th Brigade HQ. 4th Bde, also known as the “Black Rats,” is famous for being the lead unit chasing down the Desert Fox in the North African Campaign, so this task was a little like a homecoming for them. The Canadian Contingent for Ex AFRICAN LION 18 consisted mainly of 3rd Canadian Division members as well as a member from the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps School (RCACS) in Gagetown. 5/31/2018 Mail - cdnig19@hotmail.com Over the course of the past 7 months, artillery Officer Cadets from the Royal Military College of Canada have participated in exercises alongside local reserve units such as 7th field, 30th field, 56th field and 11th field as a means to expose junior OCdts to the guns, augment the reserve units, and maintain skillsets amongst the qualified gunners. “The reservists on the exercise were open to sharing their experience and involving us in their operations. Having had minimal exposure to the trade, the artillery weekend exercise was the perfect introduction. It was an extremely informative and exciting weekend that I would highly recommend to any cadet regardless of their MOSID. The positive energy of the leadership on the exercise was contagious and despite the cold weather, everyone walked away from the exercise excited about a future in the artillery.
