Editor's note: James Steele may be one of our newsletter's oldest subcribers.
WWII: It was during that time that Smythe was able
to assemble an interesting group of men and form
the 30th Battery of the 7th Toronto Regiment. They
became known as the Sportsman's Battery.
The battery became part of the Royal Canadian Artillery
and was set for active duty on September 5th, 1941
thanks to Smythe's sheer determination and the help
from a few officers with previous experience.Read the article here.

RETIREMENTS
RETRAITESThe RCA has a tradition of allowing retiring Gunners to fire a
last round when feasible. Most are done on field exercises or
at a salute but rarely if ever on operations. LCol Sylvain
Gagné managed to do it and fire his last round on an active
CAF operations with the Gunners deployed on Op PALACI.
He was able to meet with Gunners conducting avalanche
control in Rogers Pass BC where he fired a High Explosive
round to trigger a planned avalanche to keep the routes clear
through the mountains. Throughout his career he has had a
number of accomplishments.
