HISTORY
AND HERITAGE
One of North Brittany’s first seaside
resort and a departure point for
the Newfoundland fishing fleet,
Saint-Quay-Portrieux has a unique
terrestrial and marine history, and
architectural heritage.

+
L’ÎLE DE LA COMTESSE Countess’s island
The perfect playground for budding Robinson Crusoes. Nestled between Pointe du Sémaphore and Saint-Quay Port d’Armor, the tiny Île de la
Comtesse, all ruins and greenery, is a haven of peace and quiet. The island’s name probably dates from the 13th century, and several countesses
owned the small island in turns.
ǁ Accessible every days at low tide.
+ LA POINTE DU SÉMAPHORE
Semaphore Point
The Semaphore of Saint-Quay-Portrieux was built on a promontory
100 metres above sea-level. It keeps watch over the maritime traffic
of Saint-Brieuc Bay.
At the foot of the semaphore, on the footpath (GR 34), there is
a panoramic view from the Bréhat archipelago to Cap Fréhel. An
orientation table enables you to locate all the main landmarks along
the coastline and across the bay.
+ LA CHAPELLE NOTRE-DAME DE LA
GARDE
The Notre-Dame de la Garde Chapel
Built in 1828, this chapel is unique because it was constructed as
a rotunda. The chapel is dedicated to Notre Dame de la Garde,
worshipped by the sailors returning from the long sea voyages
to fish off the coast of Newfoundland and Iceland, and by their
families.
+ LA FONTAINE SAINT-QUAY
Saint-Quay Fountain
A small pyramidal granite monument stands over Fontaine Saint
Quay. The water from this spring has always been regarded
as miraculous and having special injury-healing properties.
The story of its construction is engraved on one side of the
monument.
P. 22 • SAINT-QUAY-PORTRIEUX • Holiday Guide+ LA PISCINE D’EAU
DE MER
Saltwater tide pool
Probably the most famous view of
Saint-Quay-Portrieux. It dates back
to 1929, when Saint-Quay-Portrieux
became a resort. It took only 4 months
to build it, quite a technical feat in
the 30’s. There was a double diving
board, but it was removed after several
accidents.
+ LE MOULIN
SAINT-MICHEL
Saint Michel windmill
It overlooks the town and has a
wonderful panoramic view of the
entire of Saint-Brieuc Bay. There used
to be a small chapel dedicated to the
archangel Michael where the windmill
stands today. The windmill has been
completely restored.
+ LE CHATEAU DE CALAN
Calan’s Castle
A piece of Moorish architecture on
Breton soil. The Count of Calan,
diplomat in the Middle-East, built it in
1880. The second owner finished its
construction after 1900, keeping the
Moorish style which was fancy during
the universal exhibition. Today, the villa
is a private house.

FLAVOURS
Saint-Quay-Portrieux is home to a fleet of
scallop fishing boats. Here, you’ll learn all
about the scallop, or “Coquille Saint-Jacques”
as it’s known here, from hatching to eating.
SAINT-QUAY-PORTRIEUX • Holiday Guide • P. 33Scallop capital
THE GREAT SCALLOP, OR PECTEN MAXIMUS
It lives mainly in sandy areas. The eggs are laid in the summer, then the larvae drift in the sea
before finding a place to attach themselves and grow. Once they have reached a millimetre
in size, they detach themselves from their base and live freely on the sandy bottom. They are
particularly vulnerable to a wide range of predators. However, they grow quickly and are soon
able to escape when attacked. The minimum commercial size is 10 cm (10.2 cm in the case of
those fished in Saint-Brieuc Bay); scallops can reach this size after 2 or 3 years.
An astounding fact about this species of shellfish is that it contains roe, or ‘coral’ in the
summer. From November to April, the period during which they are fished, they are known as
a ‘coquilles blanches’ (white scallops that do not contain coral).
SCALLOP FISHING
From October to April, fishermen fish scallops 2 or 3 times a week, during a very short time:
only 45 minutes! This is highly watched over in order to protect the scallop stock. When it
begins, no time to rest: the fishermen put the scallop dredgers into the sea (large metallic
nets which scrape the sand to collect shells), then pull it out, sort the shells, throw the small
ones (under 10,2 cm) back to the sea. And so on. When the 45 minutes are over, fishermen
return to the port quickly to land their catch before it goes to auction. You can watch the
boats landing but purchase is not open to the public.
