Mel Braun Le baryton Mel Braun est un interprète polyvalent. Passant facilement de l’oratorio au récital ou à l’opéra, il est toujours prêt à nouer de nouvelles collaborations. En tant qu’enseignant, M. Braun dirige le programme vocal à la Faculté de musique Marcel A. Desautels de l’Université de Manitoba, programme reconnu pour son approche collaborative et holistique à la formation des chanteurs. Il a vu un grand nombre de ses étudiants poursuivre de remarquables carrières à titre d’interprètes et d’enseignants. En qualité de directeur musical, M. Braun travaille avec les ensembles d’opéra de l’Université du Manitoba et collabore avec le chœur Camerata Nova de Winnipeg, qui se consacre à l’exploration de nouvelles approches à la musique chorale. On fait souvent appel à ses talents de membre de jury et d’animateur de cliniques de musique chorale. Il aime également enseigner à de nombreux jeunes chanteurs rock qui forment la scène musicale indépendante naissante de Winnipeg. On le retrouve toujours là où les jeunes chanteurs ont besoin de mentorat. À titre de récitaliste, il est reconnu pour son approche créative à l’interprétation des lieder, qu’il s’agisse de chanter sur scène le Liederkreis de Schumann en collaboration avec les danseurs de la troupe Q Dance de Winnipeg, de monter l’Italienisches Liederbuch de Wolf ou de suivre le parcours de Schubert avec ses amis alors qu’il composait sa dernière œuvre, Die Winterreise. Le duo qu’il forme régulièrement avec la pianiste Laura Loewen est au cœur d’un grand nombre de ces collaborations. Il détient une maîtrise en musique de l’Université de Toronto et un diplôme en musique sacrée du Canadian Mennonite Bible College. Patricia Kern, Douglas Bodle, Greta Kraus, Mary Morrison, Martin Isepp, Keith Turnbull, John Boyden, John Martens, Dorothy Lawson et George Wiebe figurent parmi les nombreux professeurs dont la grande générosité lui inspire beaucoup de reconnaissance. Dr Laura Loewen Saluée comme une artiste « exceptionnelle » (Winnipeg Free Press), « dévouée au plus haut point » (Vancouver Sun), « une virtuose », aux « doigts qui, ne sachant pas ce qui est possible d’exécuter sur un clavier, jouent ce qui ne l’est pas » (Halifax Chronicle Herald), la pianiste accompagnatrice de Winnipeg Laura Loewen a participé à des concerts partout en Amérique du Nord, en Europe et en Asie. Animée par le désir de partager sa passion pour la musique d’ensemble et le coaching, Mme Loewen est professeure d’accompagnement au piano et de chant à la Faculté de musique Marcel A. Desautels de l’Université du Manitoba. Elle est également membre du corps enseignant du programme de formation en chant d’opéra NUOVA, à Edmonton, en Alberta, du Contemporary Opera Lab à Winnipeg, au Manitoba, et de VISI (Vancouver International Song Institute). Dr Loewen a donné de nombreux concerts avec des chanteurs, des instrumentistes et des ensembles de musique de chambre. En outre, elle s’est produite en concert avec des artistes comme Charles Castleman, Tracy Dahl, Wendy Nielsen, Jasper Wood, Eugene Rousseau et William Bennett et joue régulièrement avec le baryton Mel Braun et le ténor Robert MacLaren, dont elle est la partenaire de récital. Dr Loewen et le saxophoniste Allen Harrington jouent ensemble en duo depuis sept ans. Outre ces études, elle a étudié l’accompagnement vocal pendant deux étés à la Music Academy of the West avec Warren Jones, et elle a collaboré avec Martin Katz et Graham Johnson à l’événement SongFest de 1998. Leonard Enns Leonard Enns est membre du département de musique du Conrad Grebel University College de l’Université de Waterloo, en Ontario. Il est compositeur associé du Centre de musique canadienne et membre de la Ligue canadienne de compositeurs. Parmi les nombreux enregistrements de ses œuvres vocales et instrumentales, le CD NorthWord (sous le label Centredisques du Centre de musique canadienne), enregistré par les Elora Festival Singers, est entièrement consacré à sa musique chorale. Ses projets de composition actuels comprennent des
œuvres pour le Vassar College, de Poughkeepsie dans l’État de New York, pour le chœur Golden Gate Men’s Chorus,
de San Francisco, et pour l’ensemble Camerata Nova, de Winnipeg.
En outre, Enns travaille régulièrement comme chef d’orchestre et est titulaire de diplômes d’études supérieures
dans ce domaine sous la direction de Margaret Hillis, à la Northwestern University. En plus de former des chefs
d’orchestre et de diriger des chorales à l’Université de Waterloo, il est directeur et fondateur de la DaCapo Chamber
Choir primée à l’échelle nationale. Il occupe parfois les fonctions de chef d’orchestre invité et de praticien et a
récemment été membre du jury au Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod de 2012, au pays de Galles, où il
retournera en 2013.
Larry Warkentin
Larry Warkentin est professeur émérite à Fresno Pacific University. Il y a enseigné l’interprétation au piano et
la composition musicale pendant quarante ans, avant de prendre sa retraite en 2002. Il a également rédigé des
critiques de musique classique pour le journal Fresno Bee de 1988 à 1995. Depuis sa retraite, il a donné des récitals
et des cours de théorie et de composition musicale à California State University, à Fresno.
Les compositions de M. Warkentin ont été interprétées par l’orchestre Fresno Philharmonic, le Festival Art Quartet
of Canada ainsi que par de nombreux solistes et chœurs partout en Amérique du Nord. Il a reçu le premier prix pour
ses Academic Variations for piano lors de la compétition de la MTA (Music Teachers Association) de l’État de la
Californie. En juin 2004, sa composition intitulée Chungking, May 5, 1939 pour baryton, piano et effets de piano
a été jouée en première à Waterloo, en Ontario, au Canada, par Mel Braun et Laura Loewen. En collaboration avec
Harold Haak, dans le rôle d’auteur-narrateur, sa composition pour piano Mubox Bugs, l’accompagnement musical
d’une histoire pour enfants, a été jouée en première et enregistrée sur disque compact en 2004.
M. Warkentin détient un doctorat de la University of Southern California. Depuis une décennie, il reçoit
annuellement un prix de l’American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) pour son travail en
musique classique.
Mel Braun
Baritone Mel Braun is a versatile performer, equally at home in oratorio, recital, and opera, always open to
new collaborations. As a teacher, Mel heads up the Vocal Program at the Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music,
a program renowned for its collaborative and wholistic approach to training singers. He has seen many of his
students go on to significant careers as performers and teachers. As a music director, Mel looks after the operatic
ensembles at the Univerity of Manitoba, as well as working with Winnipeg’s Camerata Nova, a choir devoted to
exploring new approaches to choral music making. He is much in demand as an Adjudicator and choral clinician,
and also enjoys teaching many of the young rock singers that make up Winnipeg’s burgeoning Indie Music scene.
You’ll find him wherever young singers need mentoring. As a recitalist, he is renowned for his creative approach
to Song, whether it’s singing Schumann’s Liederkreis while on stage with the dancers of Winnipeg’s Q Dance,
staging Wolf’s Italienisches Liederbuch, or tracing the life of Schubert among his friends as he completed his final
work, Die Winterreise. His ongoing duo partnership with pianist Laura Loewen is at the centre of many of these
collaborations.
He holds a Master of Music degree from the University of Toronto and a Church Music degree from the Canadian
Mennonite Bible College. Patricia Kern, Douglas Bodle, Greta Kraus, Mary Morrison, Martin Isepp, Keith Turnbull,
John Boyden, John Martens, Dorothy Lawson, and George Wiebe are some of the many teachers to whom he is
grateful to for their generous guidance.
Dr. Laura Loewen
Hailed as “exceptional” (Winnipeg Free Press), “fiercely committed” (Vancouver Sun), “virtuosic”, with “fingers
that have no idea of what is possible on a keyboard, so they just go ahead and play what isn’t” (Halifax ChronicleHerald), Winnipeg collaborative pianist Laura Loewen has appeared in concerts throughout North America and in Europe and Asia. Dedicated to sharing her passion for ensemble playing and coaching, she is a professor of Collaborative Piano and the Vocal Coach at the University of Manitoba’s Marcel A. Desautels Faculty of Music. She is on the faculties of the NUOVA opera training program in Edmonton, Alberta, the Contemporary Opera Lab in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and VISI (Vancouver International Song Institute). Dr. Loewen has performed extensively with singers, instrumentalists and chamber ensembles. She has appeared in concert with artists such as Charles Castleman, Tracy Dahl, Wendy Nielsen, Jasper Wood, Eugene Rousseau, and William Bennett, and is a regular recital partner of baritone Mel Braun and tenor Robert MacLaren. Loewen and duo partner, saxophonist Allen Harrington, have been performing together for the last seven years. Praised for their combination of virtuosity, musicality, and ensemble, the Harrington/Loewen duo has performed throughout North America and in Europe and Asia. Ms. Loewen holds a Doctorate of Musical Arts degree in Accompanying / Coaching from the University of Minnesota, where she was a fellowship student of Margo Garrett and Karl Paulnack. In addition to her studies there, she spent two summers at the Music Academy of the West studying vocal accompanying with Warren Jones, and worked with Martin Katz and Graham Johnson at SongFest ’98. Leonard Enns Leonard Enns is on the faculty of the Music Department at Conrad Grebel University College, University of Waterloo, Ontario, Canada. He is an Associate Composer of the Canadian Music Centre, and a member of the Canadian League of Composers. Among numerous recordings that include his vocal and instrumental works, the Canadian Music Centre Centrediscs CD, NorthWord, recorded by the Elora Festival Singers, is dedicated solely to his choral music. Current composition projects include works for Vassar College, Poughkeepsie NY, for the Golden Gate Men’s Chorus, San Francisco, and for Camerata Nova in Winnipeg. Enns is also active as conductor, having completed advanced degrees in conducting under the late Margaret Hillis at Northwestern University. In addition to teaching conducting and directing choral ensembles at University of Waterloo, he is the founding director of the national award-winning DaCapo Chamber Choir. He is active as guest conductor and clinician, recently serving on the adjudication panel at the 2012 Llangollen International Musical Eisteddfod in Wales, to which he returns again in 2013. Dr. Larry Warkentin Larry Warkentin is professor emeritus at Fresno Pacific University where he taught piano performance and music composition for forty years before his retirement in 2002. He also wrote classical music reviews for the Fresno Bee from 1988-1995. Since retirement he has performed in recitals and has also taught courses in music theory and composition at California State University, Fresno. Warkentin’s compositions have been performed by the Fresno Philharmonic, the Festival Art Quartet of Canada and by numerous soloists and choirs throughout North America. His “Academic Variations for piano” was awarded First Prize in the California State MTA competition. In June, 2004 his composition “Chungking, May 5, 1939” for baritone, piano and piano effects was premiered in Waterloo, Ontario, Canada by Mel Braun and Laura Loewen. In collaboration with Harold Haak as author-narrator his piano composition “Mubox Bugs,” a children’s story with music, was premiered and recorded on CD in 2004. Dr. Warkentin holds a DMA degree from the University of Southern California. Each year for the past decade he has received an award from ASCAP (American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers) for his work in classical music.
