Iain Mackie,
Northern Alberta Institute of Technology
Iain is the Manager of Research Supports at the Northern Alberta Institute of Technology, a
leading polytechnic and the third largest post-secondary institute in Alberta. Iain has been
nominated at NAIT for his customer service in aiding research teams with their proposals and
reporting to varied funding bodies. Since Iain joined NAIT in 2012, faculty, research chairs and
research centres have generated 285 approved proposals for $52 million. Iain holds a PhD
in Chemistry from the University of Edinburgh and enjoyed post-doctoral work in the US and
Canada before jumping into Research Administration.
Iain est le Gestionnaire des Services à la recherche du Nothern Alberta Institute of
Technology, un chef de file et 3e plus important institut polytechnique postsecondaire en
Alberta. Iain a été recruté au NAIT pour offrir un service à la clientèle en aidant les équipes
de recherche avec leurs demandes de subvention et leurs rapports pour divers bailleurs
de fonds. Depuis que Iain s’est joint au NAIT en 2012, les facultés, chaires de recherche et
centres de recherche ont obtenu 285 subventions pour un montant de 52 millions de dollars.
Iain détient un PhD en chimie de l’Université d’Édimbourg et a effectué un stage post-
doctoral aux États-Unis et au Canada avant de faire le saut en administration de la recherche.

Galina Maliouta,
Ryerson University
Galina Maliouta is an Applied Research and Innovation Advisor, within the Applied Research
and Commercialization (ARC) team in the Office of the Vice-President, Research and
Innovation at Ryerson University. Galina supports industrially sponsored research, including
the review, negotiation and administration of research partnership funding agreements, the
administration of university related policies and procedures, and the administration and
ongoing oversight of research funding.
As part of her role, Galina is responsible for leading in the development and implementation
of new strategies and procedures to promote university-industry collaboration, encouraging
participation from Ryerson researchers and promoting government matching programs such
as those from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC)
Research Partnerships Programs (RPPs) across the University.
Prior to joining Ryerson University in 2004, Galina worked in post-secondary education
institutions, industry and start-ups. Her primary academic background is in chemistry,
followed by programming and IT. Galina brought to Ryerson unique expertise in education
and industry. At Ryerson, Galina continued building her academic resume. In fall 2017, Galina
successfully completed the joint ARMA CARA Certificate in Research Management, and
later in the year she successfully completed the Osgoode Certificate in Intellectual Property
Licensing.
Galina would like to express the deepest appreciation to her mentor, Dr. Vivian Chan, who
shepherded her throughout the whole ARMA CARA Certificate journey. Galina would like to
sincerely thank her advisor, Jennifer MacInnis, who is a walking encyclopedia of Research
Management and Intellectual Property Licensing. Galina is very grateful to Sarah Lampson
and Nina Papuca from CARA for their generous advice and support. Galina acknowledges Jo
Edwards and Louise Machin from ARMA for their invaluable advice and encouragement.

Galina Maliouta est Conseillère en Recherche appliquée et Innovation, au sein de l’équipe de
Recherche appliquée et Commercialisation (ARC) du Bureau du Vice-Président, Recherche
et Innovation de l’Université Ryerson. Galina appuie la recherche industrielle commanditée,
incluant la revue, la négociation et l’administration des ententes de financement de
partenariat de recherche, l’administration des politiques et procédures connexes de
l’Université, et l’administration et le suivi du financement de la recherche en cours.
Dans le cadre de ses fonctions, Galina est responsable de l’élaboration et de la mise en
œuvre de nouvelles stratégies et procédures visant à promouvoir la collaboration université-
industrie, en encourageant la participation des chercheurs de Ryerson et en faisant la
promotion des des programmes d’appariement gouvernementaux comme tels que les
Programmes de Partenariats de Recherche (PPR) du Conseil de recherches en sciences
naturelles et en génie du Canada (CRSNG) à travers l’Université.
Avant de se joindre à l’Université Ryerson en 2004, Galina a travaillé dans les établissements
d’enseignement postsecondaire, dans l’industrie et les start-up. Sa formation académique
initiale est en chimie, suivis d’une formation en programmation et TI. Galina a apporté à
Ryerson une expertise unique tant académique qu’industrielle. Au sein de Ryerson, Galina a
continué à bâtir son curriculum vitae académique. À l’automne 2017, Galina a complété avec
succès le Certificat conjoint ARMA-ACAAR en Gestion de la recherche et, plus tard dans
l’année, le Certificat Osgoode en Licence de Propriété intellectuelle.
Galina aimerait exprimer sa plus profonde gratitude à son mentor, le Dr Vivian Chan, qui
l’a guidé pendant tout le périple du Certificat ARMA-ACAAR. Galina tient à remercier
sincèrement sa conseillère, Jennifer MacInnis, qui est une encyclopédie ambulante de la
Gestion de la recherche et de la propriété intellectuelle. Galina est très reconnaissante à

Kyla Reid,
Carleton University
Kyla Reid is the Research Facilitator in the Faculty of Public Affairs at Carleton University,
where she has been since 2012. Prior to her position at Carleton, Kyla was the Social
Sciences and Humanities Research Facilitator at Lakehead University in her hometown of
Thunder Bay, Ontario. Kyla has been an active CARA member since 2011, having facilitated
webinars as well as participating on the Membership Engagement Committee and the CARA
SSHRC Working Group. She holds a PhD in philosophy from the University of Sydney in
Australia and a Masters of Arts in Political Science from the University of British Columbia.
Kyla Reid est une Facilitatrice de la recherche à la Faculté des affaires publiques de
l’Université Carleton, où elle travaille depuis 2012. Avant cela, Kyla était une facilitatrice de la
recherche en sciences sociales et humaines à l’Université Lakehead dans sa ville natale de

Kristina Arseneau,
Queen’s University
Kristina Arseneau graduated with a Ph.D. in Biology in 2014. Since completing her Ph.D.,
she has worked as a research projects advisor in University Research Services at Queen’s
University. In that capacity, she advises health sciences researchers about funding
opportunities, grant submissions, and provides project management support.
Kristina Arseneau a obtenu son doctorat en biologie en 2014. Depuis qu’elle a terminé
son doctorat, elle a travaillé à titre de Conseillère en projets de recherche aux Services
de la recherche universitaire de l’Université Queens. Dans ses fonctions, elle conseille les
chercheurs en sciences de la santé sur les opportunités de financement, la préparation de
demandes de subvention et procure du soutien à la gestion de projet.

Dalhousie University
Following the completion of her PhD in Pharmacology and Therapeutics from McGill
University, Shelley Brown began her career in research administration at the University
Health Network in Toronto, where she worked on institutional initiatives and research
communications. Following a move to Halifax, Shelley joined Dalhousie Research Services
where she currently works in the Institutional Strategic Initiatives team, managing the Canada
Research Chairs program and large-scale institutional funding programs.
Après avoir obtenu son doctorat en pharmacologie et thérapeutique de la McGill University,
Shelley Brown a entamé sa carrière en administration de la recherche à la University
Health Network, à Toronto, où elle travaillait sur des initiatives institutionnelles et sur les
communications relatives à la recherche. À la suite de son déménagement à Halifax, Shelley
s’est joint aux services de la recherche de Dalhousie. Travaillant au sein de l’équipe des

Athabasca University
Jill Calliou holds a Bachelor of Education degree from the University of Victoria. She has
been a Research Administrator at Athabasca University since 2000 and has held various
roles throughout her time there. Currently Jill wears many hats, including that of a pre-award
grant administrator where she provides assistance to Faculty, Professional Staff and Students
applying for research funding from sponsors external to AU. Jill is also the Research Events
Coordinator and assists researchers with hosting workshops, webinars and similar events
in which their research is showcased as well as workshops that are designed to assist
researchers in developing their grant applications. Finally, Jill is responsible for maintaining
and updating the AU Research Centre website and is currently developing skills in website
development.
Jill Calliou détient un baccalauréat en éducation de la University of Victoria. Elle est
administratrice de la recherche à Athabasca University (AU) depuis 2000 et a occupé
différents postes depuis son embauche. Actuellement, Jill porte plusieurs chapeaux, y
compris celui d’administratrice pré-octroi où elle offre de l’aide au corps professoral, au
personnel professionnel et aux étudiants qui préparent des demandes de financement
externe. Jill occupe aussi les fonctions de coordonnatrice des événements de recherche
et aide les chercheurs par l’organisation d’ateliers, de webinaires et d’autres activités qui
mettent en vedette leurs recherches, en plus d’ateliers conçus pour aider les chercheurs à
préparer leurs demandes de financement. Enfin, Jill est chargée du maintien et de la mise à
jour du site web du centre de recherche de AU et développe présentement ses compétences
en conception de sites web.

St. Thomas University
Danielle Connell is the Research Services Officer at St. Thomas University in Fredericton
NB. Her interests include innovations in ethics review, awareness of open data at small
institutions, personalized proposal support, facilitating community engagement, supporting
“risky” research, fostering international collaborations in cannabis research, and promoting
inter-institutional cooperation amongst Canadian higher education institutions. The CRA
program was an excellent learning experience for Danielle. It has opened many new doors for
her career and has helped her to expand her network of expert colleagues across the globe.
Danielle Connell est la conseillère des services de recherche de l’Université St-Thomas à
Fredericton, Nouveau-Brunswick. Elle s’intéresse aux innovations en matière d’éthique, à la
sensibilisation aux données ouvertes dans les petites institutions, au soutien personnalisé
pour les demandes de subvention, à l’engagement communautaire, au soutien de la
recherche à haut risque, à encourager les collaborations internationales pour la recherche
sur le cannabis et à promouvoir la coopération interinstitutionnelle entre les établissements
d’enseignement supérieur canadiens. Le certificat en administration de la recherche fut une
excellente expérience d’apprentissage pour Danielle. Il lui a ouvert de nombreuses portes
pour sa carrière et l’a aidée à élargir son réseau de collègues experts à travers le monde.

L’ASSOCIATION CANADIENNE DES ADMINISTRATRICES ET DES ADMINISTRATEURS DE RECHERCHEAnn-Marie Field,
Université du Québec à Montréal
Ann-Marie Field was recruited in 2013 as the first research facilitator at the Faculty of
communication at the Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM). She has been working
closely with researchers to capitalize on their great potential and increase research funding at
the Faculty. She focuses mostly on pre-award and research development activities for faculty
members, but she is also involved in strategic planning for the development of research at
the Faculty. Ann-Marie has a Ph.D. in Political Science from Carleton University (2005) and
has completed, in the fall of 2017, CARA’s Certificate in Research Administration awarded
by the ATHE (Awards for Training and Higher Education, UK). She is currently a member of
ADARUQ’s executive board (Quebec’s association of research administrators).
En 2013, la Faculté de communication de l’Université du Québec à Montréal (UQAM) a
choisi Ann-Marie Field pour être sa première conseillère au développement de la recherche.
Depuis, Ann-Marie travaille étroitement avec les chercheurs misant sur leurs talents tout
en augmentant le financement de la recherche à la Faculté. Elle se concentre surtout sur
le pré-octroi et le cheminement en recherche, mais contribue également à la planification
stratégique du développement de la recherche à la Faculté. Ann-Marie a un doctorat en
science politique de l’Université Carleton (2005) et a complété, à l’automne 2017, le certificat
en administration de la recherche octroyé par l’ACAR en partenariat avec l’ATHE (Awards
for Training and Higher Education, Angleterre). Elle est présentement officière à l’ADARUQ
(Association des administratrices et des administrateurs de recherche universitaire du
Québec).

L’ASSOCIATION CANADIENNE DES ADMINISTRATRICES ET DES ADMINISTRATEURS DE RECHERCHEJulie Frédette,
Bishop’s University
Julie Frédette holds a Ph.D. in Comparative Canadian Literature from the Université de
Sherbrooke. She has been a Research Officer at Bishop’s University since 2014. In this
role, Julie coordinates ethics committees for research with human participants, animals
and biohazards, provides assistances to students applying for graduate scholarship and is
in charge of research communications, promotion and knowledge mobilization. In this last
respect, Julie is now working towards a Certificate in Knowledge Mobilization offered online
by Guelph University. Finally, Julie has been a regular volunteer translator for CARA for the
past two years.
Julie Frédette détient un doctorat en Littérature canadienne comparée de l’Université de
Sherbrooke. Elle est Agente de recherche à l’Université Bishop’s depuis 2014. Elle coordonne
les comités d’éthique de la recherche avec participants humains, avec animaux et avec
matières présentant des risques biologiques. Elle appuie également les étudiants dans leurs
demandes de bourses de recherche de deuxième et troisième cycle, et est responsable
de la communication et de la promotion de la recherche à Bishop’s. Enfin, elle appuie les
professeurs qui veulent proposer des activités de mobilisation des connaissances. À cette
fin, elle travaille présentement sur un Certificat en mobilisation des connaissances offert par
l’Université Guelph. Elle est traductrice bénévole pour l’ACAAR depuis deux ans.

Holland Bloorview Kids Rehabilitation Hospital
• Started at Holland Bloorview (HB) in 2009 as an Accounts Payable Clerk
• General accountant in the Finance Department at HB in 2012 including research grant
accounting
• As Bloorview Research Institute continuously grow, they needed a full time research
accountant, so starting Apr 1, 2017 I officially became part of the Bloorview Research
Institute as their Research Accountant.
• Enrolled in the 1st cohorts of the CRA with full support of HB.
• Fait ses débuts à l’hôpital Holland Bloorview (HB) en 2009 en tant que commise aux
comptes-fournisseurs.
• Occupe le poste de comptable générale au service des finances de HB en 2012, y
compris celui de responsable des subventions de recherche en comptabilité.
• Étant donné sa croissance constante, l’Institut de recherche de Bloorview avait besoin
d’un comptable responsable de la recherche. C’est donc à partir du 1er avril 2017 que
j’intègre officiellement l’équipe de l’Institut de recherche de Bloorview en tant qu’agent
comptable en recherche.
• Inscrite dans la première cohorte de CRA avec tout le soutien de HB.

University of Lethbridge
Hector MacIntyre was raised in Olds, Alberta, and graduated from the University of Alberta
with BA and MA degrees in philosophy. He continued on this academic path at the University
of Ottawa, where he obtained a doctorate in philosophy. He is currently employed as a grants
facilitator for the SSHRC portfolio in the Office of Research & Innovation Services at the
University of Lethbridge. He has been a CARA member since 2014 when it still went by the
name “CAURA”.
Hector MacIntyre a grandi à Olds, en Alberta, et a obtenu un baccalauréat puis une
maîtrise en philosophie de l’Université de l’Alberta. Il a poursuivi sa formation universitaire
à l’Université d’Ottawa, où il a obtenu un doctorat en philosophie. Il est actuellement
facilitateur de recherche pour les subventions du CRSH au Bureau des services de recherche
et d’innovation de l’Université de Lethbridge. Il est membre de l’ACAAR depuis 2014 quand
l’association s’appelait encore “ACARU”.

NSCC
Lorie has been working at the Nova Scotia Community College for the past 9 years and has
been in the Applied Research office for the past 3 years, directly supporting the Associate
Vice President of Applied Research & Innovation as well as providing support to the
Director of Applied Research and the Director of Strategic Relationships. This multi-level role
has given her great insight and experience into the day-to- day operation of the Research
Financial office, including inventory control, contract proposals, various HR items and
financial management. Since completion of her Certificate in Research Administration, Lorie
plans to become more involved in the Applied Research and Innovation office by providing
coordination of various project work, strategic planning and industry liaison work.
Lorie travaille au Nova Scotia Community College depuis maintenant 9 ans et occupe un

Bureau du financement de la recherche, notamment des activités de contrôle d’inventaire, de
propositions de contrats et de divers enjeux touchant les ressources humaines and la gestion
financière. Ayant complété son Certificat en administration de la recherche, Lorie compte
maintenant s’impliquer davantage dans le milieu de la recherche appliquée et de l’innovation
en coordonnant divers aspects de gestion de projet, de planification stratégique et de liaison
avec le milieu industriel.

Karen E. Mosier is a Research Coordinator for the Department of Surgery in the College of
Medicine at the University of Saskatchewan. Karen has her BA in Psychology and MSc in
Pharmacy. Karen has over twelve years’ experience in research administration. Karen has
been a member with CARA since 2010. She regularly attends the CARA Annual conferences
and frequently volunteers as a session moderator. Karen recently completed her Certificate
in Research Administration through ARMA. She is currently mentoring other students within
the new CRA program offered through Mohawk College. She is also a member of the
CARA Member Engagement Committee. Karen also regularly writes articles for the CARA
Connection newsletter. In her spare time, Karen enjoys spending time with her partner
Dean at their weekend place working on the yard and gardening or watching movies. Karen
likes to keep active and enjoys walking, doing yoga and riding her recumbent bike. She
also likes baking, doing crafts and playing video games. Karen also enjoys spending time
with her lifelong friend Bertha and visiting her great nephew and her great nieces that she
affectionately calls her “great kids”.

de la recherche offert par ARMA. Elle est maintenant mentor pour les étudiants de la
nouvelle cohorte du CAR offert par Mohawk College. Elle siège également sur le Comité

d’information Connection de l’ACAAR. Dans ses temps libres, Karen aime passer du temps
avec son conjoint, Dean, à leur résidence secondaire, jardiner et écouter des films. Karen
aime être active et apprécie la marche, le yoga et le cyclisme. Elle aime aussi cuisiner,
faire de l’artisanat et jouer à des jeux vidéo. Enfin, Karen aime passer du temps avec son
amie de longue date, Bertha, et visiter ses arrières-petits neveux et nièces, qu’elle nomme
affectueusement ses « arrières-enfants ».

Anita Sharma is a Research Grants Development Officer at Thompson Rivers University,
Kamloops, BC. In her role, she conducts all aspects of research development, grant
facilitation and administration including research prospecting, pre- and post-award grant
support, institutional compliance review and approval of grant applications, and tracking the
growth of research. She has developed various resources for supporting these activities (e.g.,
Research Prospecting Guide, Pre-and Post-award Toolkits).
She recently completed a two-year Certification in Research Administration offered by CARA
in collaboration with the UK’s ARMA. She is also an active CARA volunteer and is leading SIG
(New Research Administrators). She holds a PhD degree in Biochemistry, has published 27
research articles in refereed journals and, has presented her work at many conferences.

Jenna Slobozian,
University of Calgary
Jenna Slobozian is currently the Research Facilitator in Cumming School of Medicine at
the University of Calgary. Her role contains a focus on grant development and navigational
support for researchers throughout the research life-cycle. Prior to joining Medicine Jenna
was the Senior Research Grants Officer in Research Services Office at the University of
Calgary. She also worked for the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Cancer
Society.
Jenna Slobozian est actuellement Responsable du développement de la recherche

Liz Vanderlinde is a Research Facilitator at the University of Regina in Regina, SK. Her
interests include proposal development, research project management, and the challenges
of research administration at small institutions. The CRA program provided Liz with a solid
overview of the research administration profession. It also provided opportunities to expand
her network of colleagues across Canada. Liz would like to thank her mentors, Florence
Dzierszinski and Deb Zornes for all of their help and support.

Meghan Van Gaal joined the University of Prince Edward Island in October 2015 as the
Research Project Manager with the Canada Excellence Research Chair (CERC) Aquatic
Epidemiology program. She started the Certificate in Research Administration in April 2016
and completed it in March 2018. Having completing the certificate, she plans to mentor
others who are completing the CARA Research Administration Certificate.
Meghan Van Gaal s’est jointe à l’Université de l’île-du-Prince-Édouard en octobre 2015
à titre de Gestionnaire de projet de recherche dans le cadre du programme de la Chaire
d’Excellence en Recherche du Canada (CERC) sur l’épidémiologie aquatique. En avril 2016,
elle a débuté son Certificat en administration de la recherche qu’elle finit en mars 2018. Ayant
obtenu son Certificat, elle envisage le mentorat d’autres personnes suivant le Certificat en
administration de la recherche de l’ACAAR.
