Wat een mooie TTO-nieuwsbrief en wat wordt er veel
gedaan, beleefd, ondernomen en geleerd!
Bij het schrijven van deze inleiding ken ik de inhoud van deze TTO-
nieuwsbrief nog niet. Toch durf ik met een gerust hart bovenstaande
titel te noteren, want het hele Elde College bruist van de energie en
het tweetalige vwo in het bijzonder.
Natuurlijk was ook dit schooljaar weer erg lastig door de heropleving
van het coronavirus. De corona-maatregelen waren (zijn) nodig, maar
tevens ook bijzonder storend en verstorend, beperkend en
belemmerend, ontzettend vervelend en ontmoedigend. Maar
desondanks hebben de beperkingen ook nieuwe dingen mogelijk
gemaakt. En opnieuw werd duidelijk hoe inventief en ondernemend
onze docenten zijn en hoe enthousiast de meeste leerlingen er in
meegaan.
Want wat doe je bijvoorbeeld als je niet naar het buitenland kunt gaan? Dan haal je het buitenland
gewoon binnen. En dat hebben we dit jaar volop en met succes gedaan. De vorige TTO-
nieuwsberichten stonden er vol van en dat zal in deze nieuwsberichten niet anders zijn.
Het is ontzettend mooi en boeiend om te lezen wat we allemaal doen, maar het is ook heel belangrijk
om nog eens te herhalen waarom we het doen:
Het TTO richt zich op meer dan het hoogst haalbare diploma dat bij de leerling past en is meer dan
de som van kennis en kunde. Onze TTO-missie is dat de leerling zich ontwikkelt tot een kritisch
denkende wereldburger met een onderzoekende houding, een eigen mening en een open en brede
blik. Een wereldburger die beschikt over die kennis en vaardigheden die essentieel zijn om als
zelfstandige burger te kunnen leven in een wereld van tegenstellingen, waarin mensen steeds meer
met elkaar te maken hebben. Een wereldburger die weet dat hij medeverantwoordelijk is voor de
toekomst en dat problemen samen en in samenhang opgelost moeten worden. Een wereldburger die
de taal van de ander spreekt en daarnaast de Engels taal beheerst op (near) native niveau.
Om dit te realiseren bieden wij onze leerlingen een internationale leerroute met als einddoelen het
hoogst mogelijke niveau taalvaardigheid in het Engels, pre-academische vaardigheden (IB:
International Baccalaureat) en interculturele competenties in een leeromgeving met internationale
en interculturele contacten.
Mocht u nu, na het lezen van onze mooie TTO-missie, denken dat papier geduldig is en mooie
woorden nog niet persé goede daden hoeven te zijn; ik ben ervan overtuigd dat de inhoud van deze

nieuwsbrief, waarvan de redactie gedeeltelijk in handen is van een aantal TTO-leerlingen, bewijst dat
wij heel veel ondernemen om onze missie ook daadwerkelijk te realiseren.
Ik ben trots op alles wat we doen en gedaan hebben. Trots op onze tvwo slagingscijfers die altijd
100% zijn, zowel voor het tvwo als het IB. Trots op onze ideeën en idealen, op onze doelen en
projecten, op onze inzet en daadkracht, op onze docenten, onderwijsondersteuners, leerlingen en
ouders.
Ik ben trots en blij dat ik jarenlang teamleider mocht zijn van deze geweldige afdeling. Mijn werk op
het Elde College stopt per 1 augustus, leeftijd! (om het woord pensioen niet te hoeven gebruiken),
maar het realiseren van onze missie gaat door met anderen omdat we geloven in wat we zeggen en
doen.
Ook al heb ik als teamleider (sinds 2 jaar alleen teamleider bovenbouw) niet zo heel veel persoonlijke
contacten gehad met ouders en leerlingen, toch wil ik graag alle ouders en leerlingen heel hartelijk
danken voor de fijne samenwerking en het vertrouwen in het Elde College en in mij. Ik wens iedereen
heel veel geluk en een mooie toekomst.
Het was me een genoegen !

Cambridge Advanced English (CAE) examen juni 2021 - tvwo 3
Afgelopen juni was het zover: de leerlingen van V3BT en V3CT mochten op voor hun CAE. Verdeeld
over twee dagen hebben ze in het Aristo zalencentrum in Eindhoven de vier onderdelen van het
examen gemaakt. De zaterdag was veruit het langst, met de onderdelen writing, reading and use of
English en listening, die in totaal goed waren voor ruim 3,5 uur geconcentreerd schrijven, lezen en
luisteren. Het speaking exam was al eerder die week afgenomen en duurde slechts twintig minuten,
hoewel deze kortere duur niet zorgde voor minder spanning. Twee weken voor het examen hebben
de leerlingen kunnen oefenen tijdens een proefexamen in het Spectrum. Die dag zag er precies uit
zoals hun examendag zodat ze goed wisten wat ze konden verwachten. Met hulp van mevrouw
Linders zijn ook alle proefexamens nagekeken en wisten de leerlingen heel goed hoe ver ze waren in
hun voorbereiding. Leerlingen zijn blij dat het erop zit, maar moeten nog wel even in spanning hun
uitslag afwachten. Dit duurt meestal zo’n zes weken.

Two-day cultural and sports event - tvwo 2
Instead of going on a trip to the united kingdom, the students of tvwo 2 had an eventful cultural
sports day on the 17th and 18th of June. On these days there were different workshops on schedule.
On the first day there was a design workshop where we learned all about design and especially how
to design shoes. At the end of the presentation we had to design our own shoes in groups. You had
to make 3 different shoes that were all linked to a theme and famous person.
On this same day we also had a sports activity, the highland games. This is a Scottish ‘sports event’
from a long time ago to prove their clans worth and to determine which clan was strongest. There
are a lot of different elements in this game. These elements are all about testing your strength. You
had activities like tug of war, or throwing a heavy pole as far as you could. This was a lot of fun, but it
was really hard and at the end of the day we were all drained, so to give us a boost we had fish and
chips. The fish and chips were delicious and definitely gave us a boost.
The next day we started with a workshop lacrosse. Lacrosse is typical Canadian and is like hockey but
the ball is in the air instead of on the ground. This was a very fun activity to do. At the end of the
workshop we also did a little game, which was of course the most fun.
After that we cycled to Boxtel and to give us some energy we had a hotdog. Then we went canoeing
on the Dommel. This was a more relaxed activity but still a lot of fun. Some of us fell into the water
and some of us stayed dry. These two days were a lot of fun and were definitely a good substitute for
the trips to the UK.

Day of politics - tvwo2
In year 2 there were workshops organized for the ‘Day of politics’. We began with
an introduction from the king’s commissionaire. Afterwards, we had different workshops given by
staff members of ProDemos. ProDemos is the ‘House for democracy and the rule of law’.
The first workshop we had our own township, and we had to decide on what things we would spend
our money and which we would spend less or no money on. You would argument with each other
why you would want to spend money on this and why you wouldn’t. Then we would vote again and
what got the most votes was the one we would choose. At the end we would see how much money
we had spent, and if we went over our budget or that we stayed within budget limits.
The second workshop we talked and argued about fundamental rights. We also argued about if
corona had effect on these rights or not. Then at the end of the day we had the chance to ask
questions to members of the parliament from the province of North-Brabant. They were both from
different political parties. Normally on this day we would go to the provincial house in Den Bosch, but
of course with corona we couldn’t go. This day was a good alternative for what
we would normally do and it was very educational and fun!

Exchange Denmark / the Netherlands - tvwo 2
Hej hvordan går det? Hvordan kan du håndtere miljøet mere bæredygtigt i dit land? Hey how are
you and how do you deal with the environment in a more eco friendly way in your country?
This was one of the questions that was discussed during the online exchange between our students
from tvwo 2 and their peers from the Thyregod Skole in Give, Denmark. In May and June the
students learned more about each other’s culture. This was not entirely new to them since they
already were in contact in year 1 when they exchanged e-mails.
They also talked about the Sustainable Development Goals created by the United Nations and looked
into the topics of water and life below water in more detail. One of the assignments was to take
pictures of situations from their daily life where they realized that they could choose between a non-
sustainable solution and a sustainable solution. Underneath the results of one of the groups.
After the project, the students indicated that it was quite a challenge to work together, especially
from a technical and organizational point of view. But once those obstacles had been overcome, it
was also informative and entertaining to get to know the Danes a little better. Although an online
exchange is always second best to a physical exchange.

Digitale uitwisseling Giuseppe Luosi (Italië) - tvwo 4
In juni werd de uitwisseling met onze partnerschool in Mirandola
afgerond. De leerlingen van tvwo-4 werkten vanaf november aan
verschillende opdrachten samen met Italiaanse leeftijdsgenoten.
Voor het vak CKV ontwierpen ze een poster of logo voor een van
de duurzame ontwikkelingsdoelen (SDG’s) van de VN.
Bij Maatschappijwetenschappen maakten ze een radio of video
commercial en voor het vak Global Perspectives was hun opdracht
om samen met de Italianen een les voor te bereiden over een van
de SDG’s en die les ook daadwerkelijk te geven aan medeleerlingen
van het tweetalig vwo.
Bij de afsluitende bijeenkomst werd teruggeblikt op alle
actitviteiten waarbij een Italiaans flesje fris en koekjes werden
geserveerd. Ondanks dat er over en weer ‘Saluti’ klonk, bleek de
Crodino geen succes en zal het drinken van dit drankje niet iets zijn
dat de leerlingen meenemen naar de toekomst.

Met de leerlingen van tvwo-2 ging zij het gesprek aan over
hoe sommige mensen vooroordelen hebben. Ze vertelde
onder andere dat verschillende collega’s verbaasd waren
over het feit dat zij altijd stipt op tijd op afspraken arriveert.
Want, zo was de aanname, Zuid-Amerikanen komen toch
altijd minstens een half uur te laat?
Regina gaf niet alleen voorbeelden, ze ging ook in op de
vraag waarom het belangrijk is om je te realiseren dat men
soms in hokjes denkt. Dit kan immers impact hebben op
werkomstandigheden maar kan ook meespelen tijdens een
stage of studie en zelfs op vakantie. Een ‘gewaarschuwde’
leerling telt voor twee!

Internationale stage - tvwo 4
Hester Buesseler - Author at Gynzy
From April 26th to May 7th, Gynzy was two employees richer. Vrinda and
Suzanne joined the US Gynzy team (here in the Netherlands) and impressed
Team US with their hard work and language skills. Vrinda and Suzanne had
three tasks to complete during their internship.
First and most importantly, they worked on cataloging the Dutch math
exercises that Gynzy-NL currently has, and translating those to English.
Secondly, they each independently translated a math lesson, which will soon
be available to the public in the Gynzy Library! Finally they were both asked to come up with a
personal project to complete during their internship. Suzanne teamed up with Nick and created posts
that we will use in our social media campaigns. Vrinda decided to tackle lesson-building, and is
currently still finishing up the lesson, which we hope to publish in the next few weeks.
Both Vrinda and Suzanne did a great job, especially considering that an online internship was new to
all of us. They participated in daily meetings, shared what was going well and where their difficulties
were, and quickly adapted to the work given to them. We were glad to have great interns and were
pleased with the work they completed.
Interview International Internship
Vrinda and Suzanne did an internship at a company called Gynzy for two weeks. Gynzy is an
international organization with a branch in Den Bosch and New York that develops digital learning
resources for students and teachers. Vrinda and Suzanne had two main tasks: Task 1: Design
Catalogue Math Exercises, Task 2: Create Lesson translation On top of that, they worked on a
personal project.
Question 1: How did you come on the idea to do your internship?
Vrinda: So, we got an email from miss Gimbrère, and she send it to all our classmates. And basically,
what she said was: here this company, and they are looking for 2 interns. And because we didn’t
have the opportunity to do an international internship, in 4th or 5th year, she purposed for the class
to do this. And basically 3 or 4 people, they signed up for this and then we had to make a
motivational letter. Eventually we worked on the internship and then we had to apply for the
internship and then have a conversation with our internship leader Hester. And that is basically how
we got internship.
Question 2: Do you also want to do something with education in your further education?
Suzanne: Not really, but 1 of the things the internship offered me, was doing something with social
media. And that is probably something I want to do in the future. So that helps with this as well.
Vrinda: We both had to make our personal project next to the internship and I did something with
the LGBTQ+ community, because for pride, because I think it is important for kids to learn about the
community.

Question 3: Could you miss your two weeks school during your internship or not, how did you plan it?
Suzanne: we were not allowed to miss two weeks, so we had to do one week in the break as well, so
we decided to take the week before the may break and then take one week of our may break to work
on the internship but it was fine to miss school I personally worked hard to finish the homework in
advance so we didn’t have to do anything extra afterwards but it was pretty fine and considering we
had to take one week of our may break we missed almost no classes and we were quite lucky ‘cause
the week before the may break there were only three days of school that we had to miss.
Question 4: What did you have to do for your personal project?
Vrinda: As I said before I made a class on LGBTQ community I basically had to tell in children’s
language what the community represents, who’s in the community, what the community does for
these people and the kind of struggles with homophobia and transphobia this community faces. And
I’ve put in one class that will publish soon on her website.
Suzanne: And I did it about some posts for social media to engage with more teachers and some
students so there will be more teachers using Gynzy in the future.
Question 5: What was the most difficult during your two tasks?
Suzanne: I wouldn’t say they were difficult, but there was one that was a little bit more boring than
the other. For one of the tasks we had to translate presentations for lessons, which was a lot of fun
to do because you could come up with some names, and it was quite fun to mess around with those
presentations. However we had to do another task which was to fill in a table with exercises that
they will translate in the future, and that was quite boring because you had to organize them all the
time, and it was quite a lot of work to do.
Vrinda: In the beginning it was not really difficult, it was rather more confusing, because it was so
many things you had to copy and paste and put it in the right order, but eventually you do get the
system and how you should put it in the excel page.
Question 6: Can you give us some more information about Gynzy?
Vrinda: So Gynzy is a Dutch company, then it expanded to the US, I know they teach us how to pay
for a license, in order to access the classes, and eventually during lockdown they decided to make
these classes free, so education is more accessible for schools that cannot afford these classes
Suzanne: besides that they also provide laptop services and such to classrooms, so they can have
specialized laptop’s and Ipad’s to work with Gynzy, to improve education, especially for kids that are
struggling more than others
Vrinda: And they offer you math and English and other subjects you have difficulties with at school,
but they also have these special programs for American kids called social emotional learning and
that’s where they learn how to deal with problems at home or when you’re in discussion with your
classmate and he gets upset, what do you do then, how do you deal with emotions and such and
that’s also what made me interested in Gynzy.
Question 7: Did you also get feedback from your tasks?
Suzanne: Yes we did, we also went into a meeting every single day, around 4 o’clock to discuss what
we’ve been doing that day with the team, which is the international part of it. Because we were talk
to the New York team in America. And we would receive personal feedback as well throughout the
day via a chat. So we were always up-to-date if how we were doing. Or what we could improve.

Dit jaar zijn de eerste contacten gelegd
tussen het Elde College en The
International School of Vietnam (ISV) in
Hanoi. Tvwo-3 heeft in een project
samengewerkt en in juni hebben de
leerlingen van tvwo-4 een meet & greet
gehad met een aantal leeftijdsgenoten van
ISV.
Tijdens deze kennismaking kwamen
onderwerpen als het Vietnamese eten en
de toeristische highlights aan bod. Er werd
ook gesproken over wat ‘zwaardere’ thema’s zoals corruptie. Een van de leerlingen bleek een Zuid-
Koreaanse achtergrond te hebben. Zodoende werden de verschillende onderwerpen vanuit drie
landen perspectief belicht.
The Best of Term
The best of term is one student of every class. Every trimester of a
school year the teachers have student discussions of every class.
In the meetings they talk about the students and how they did in
that trimester and then they decide who did their best. You can be
the best of term by doing your best, hand everything in in time and
pay attention in the lessons. When you become the best of term
you get a certificate and a coupon for the school cafeteria in the A
building. They also show you why they chose you.

What did we have to do?
We had a nice midday at school, in that midday we were doing a presentation about our portfolio.
We did that presentation in groups of 3 or more people. During the presentation we had to tell
something about what we've made and what we've put in our portfolio. First showed our own
portfolio, so what is in it and what we've made. And then we had to tell something about an activity
or event we liked and learned a lot from.
How was it to make, listen and watch the presentations?
It was really interesting to see what other people liked and did this year. But some people's
concentration was a bit off because they had to listen to all the presentation and most students
wanted to go home because they had had a long day of school at the end.
What is a portfolio?
A portfolio is something in its learning in which we have to put our documents we are proud of and
documents the teachers wanted us to put in. Like for geography we had to make an earthquake
presentation and we put it in. And a poem for English. We make this to know what we are proud of
and so we can look at it after we have finished year 1. It gives us an insight in what we have learned.
Besides, we have something to show others when we apply for a job maybe or in the future a
university.

Bij mensenrechten en de schending daarvan denken we toch al snel aan bijvoorbeeld Rusland
(Navalny) of China. Maar ook in landen als Australië en Portugal worden mensenrechten niet altijd
goed nageleefd. Daarover ging de workshop die de leerlingen van tweetalig vwo-4 kregen van een
medewerker van Amnesty International op 20 mei.
Ze verdiepten zich tijdens de workshop in een zelfgekozen land en zochten uit hoe het daar met de
mensenrechten is gesteld. Vervolgens werden de uitkomsten van hun onderzoek weergegeven op
posters die ze aan het einde van de workshop aan elkaar presenteerden.

Op vrijdag 25 juni hadden de leerlingen van 1 tto
een politieke dag. In de ochtend kwamen er 2
raadsleden van Meierijstad op bezoek, Mirjam
van Esch en Sikko Oegema. De leerlingen hadden
vragen bedacht en konden zoveel vragen als ze
maar wilden.
Een paar vragen:
Hoe ben je raadslid geworden?
Waar staat jouw partij voor?
Wat doe je als raadslid
Wat vinden jullie belangrijk?
Daarna hadden de leerlingen 2 online workshops. De
eerste workshop ging over grondrechten. Wat zijn
grondrechten en wat houdt het in. Dat gingen ze
onderzoeken door een soort van kahoot. Er kwam een
stelling en dan moest je kiezen of het in de grondrechten
staat of niet. Toen kwam er een opdracht dat over de
coronatijd ging. De leerlingen moesten zeggen of dat een
grondrecht beperkt was door corona of niet.
De 2e online workshop ging over belastingen. De
leerlingen moesten kijken waar geld aan besteed
moesten worden in een dorp. Daarna gingen ze kijken of
het uitgebreid moest of simpel. Bijv. Afval op de grond
moet dat alleen in het centrum aangepakt worden of
overal in het dorp? Uiteindelijk kon je zien hoeveel je
had besteed en wat misschien verbetert moest worden.

Day 1
This year the first year students of tto had a camp instead of a trip to Canterbury. We went to a
scouting club in Boxtel. That morning we had an English breakfast. We played many games, did
several activities and played a lot of soccer. In the evening two students made pancakes for dinner.
And some of the other students did the dishes. After the dinner we
made a camp fire. When we were sitting around the camp fire… a
story teller came! He told a story about a blacksmith about a bone
bridge in Wales… When it was dark we went to the forest and
played Stratego. After we played the game we sat around the camp
fire and chilled. Later that night we checked if we had harvest mites.
Many students did! Then operation ’take the harvest mite began’!
Then the students went to bed to be ready for the next day.
Day 2
Most of the students woke up really early and played soccer again. After breakfast the girls started
with packing their stuff and the boys had morning exercises with Mr. Verhagen. Then the other way
around. When everyone was done with packing and the girls were back, we went to the Langspier. At
the Langspier we did all kinds of games. For example: trail and assembling a draft. When we were
done, we went swimming.
The End
Eventually it was time to go and it was time to eat chips. Then it was the end of the camp and the
children were picked up by parents.
Points
At the end of the camp we gained points by pointing out
that the teachers spoke English and by the games we did,
you could also lose point by speaking Dutch. We all
started with 100 points.
