Ce 15 mars à Bruxelles, près de 50 organisations agricoles, environnementales et de solidarité
internationale se mobilisent contre le Forum pour le futur de l’agriculture (FFA) organisé par
l’industrie chimique et agroalimentaire. Le monde paysan et ses alliés dénoncent la tenue d’un
événement de greenwashing visant à renforcer l’influence de l’industrie chimique et
agroalimentaire dans la conception de politiques publiques.

Des actions symboliques et visuelles, des prises de paroles et la tenue d’un marché paysan
illustreront les impasses de l’agrobusiness et mettront en valeur ses alternatives. Cette mobilisation
aura lieu à quelques mètres du centre de conférence The Square, où Syngenta, multinationale de
l’industrie chimique et ELO, lobby des européen propriétaires terriens, organisent le Forum pour le
futur de l’agriculture (FFA). Cette année, ces derniers invitent le Vice-Président de la Commission
européenne en charge du Green Deal, Frans Timmermans, et la Commissaire à la santé et à la
sécurité alimentaire, Stella Kyriakides. Les organisateurs de l’action entendent leur rappeler que la
société civile attend de leur part une politique juste et ambitieuse pour une transition agroécologique
des systèmes alimentaires. Récemment, 1,2 millions de citoyennes et citoyens européens ont signé
la pétition “Sauvons les abeilles et les agriculteurs!”1, demandant une réduction de 80 % des
pesticides de synthèse d'ici 2030, une élimination progressive des pesticides de synthèse en Europe
d'ici 2035, et un soutien fort aux agriculteurs dans leur transition vers l'agroécologie.

Depuis l’adoption de la stratégie “de la ferme à la fourchette” de l’UE en mai 2020, l’industrie des
pesticides et le grand lobby agricole ont organisé une campagne de lobbying massive pour la mettre
à mal. Syngenta, ainsi que les autres grands producteurs de pesticides (BASF, Bayer et Corteva), et
leur groupe de pression CropLife Europe, s'opposent à tout objectif contraignant de réduction des
pesticides qui soit un tant soit peu ambitieux. Leurs actions pourraient conduire les agriculteurs à
rester enfermés dans un système agricole dépassé. De leur côté, les organisations de la société civile
attendent de pied ferme une proposition pour la réduction des pesticides que la Commission doit
finaliser dans les prochains jours.

En se mobilisant contre cet événement, les organisations présentes souhaitent aussi valoriser des
pistes alternatives pour le futur du système alimentaire. Manuel Eggen, de Fian Belgique, explique:
“Afin de garantir une alimentation de qualité accessible pour toutes et tous, des conditions de vie
dignes aux agriculteurs et agricultrices du Nord comme du Sud, et des pratiques agricoles qui
prennent soin de la nature, nous défendons l’agroécologie, l’agriculture paysanne et la souveraineté
alimentaire, qui sont en rupture avec les modèles et solutions défendues par l'agro-industrie”. Selon
Astrid Ayral du syndicat agricole FUGEA: “un forum organisé par des multinationales et qui ne donne
pas une place centrale aux agriculteurs et agricultrices n’a aucune légitimité pour parler de l’avenir de
l’agriculture”.

Op dinsdag 15 maart voeren een 50-tal boerenorganisaties, milieuverenigingen en organisaties
uit de Internationale Solidariteitsbeweging actie in Brussel tegen het Forum For the Future of
Agriculture (FFA), dat er georganiseerd wordt door de chemische en agro-voedingsindustrie.
Boeren en hun bondgenoten hekelen dit "greenwashing"-evenement, waarmee de chemische
en agro-voedingsindustrie het overheidsbeleid tracht te beïnvloeden.

Net naast het conferentiecentrum The Square, waar de FFA plaatsvindt, strijken actievoerders neer
om er symbolische en visueel aantrekkelijke acties te voeren, toespraken te houden en u te
verwelkomen op een heuse boerenmarkt. Deze acties visualiseren de doodlopende wegen van de
agro-industrie en zetten mogelijke alternatieven in de kijker. De organisatoren van deze mobilisatie
willen de politieke leiders die zijn uitgenodigd voor de FFA, waaronder de vicevoorzitter van de
Europese Commissie belast met de Green Deal, Frans Timmermans, en de commissaris voor
Gezondheid en Voedselveiligheid, Stella Kyriakides, eraan herinneren dat het maatschappelijk
middenveld van hen een rechtvaardig en ambitieus beleid verwacht dat inzet op een agro-ecologische
transitie van onze voedselsystemen. Onlangs hebben 1,2 miljoen Europese burgers de petitie "Red
bijen en boeren" ondertekend, waarin zij vragen om synthetische pesticiden in Europa geleidelijk af te
schaffen tegen 2035, maatregelen te nemen om de biodiversiteit te herstellen en boeren stevig te
ondersteunen in hun transitie naar agro-ecologie.

Sinds de lancering van de Europese Farm to Fork (F2F)-strategie in mei 2020 hebben de
pesticidenindustrie en de agro-industrie een massale lobby-campagne gevoerd om de F2F-strategie
te ondermijnen. Syngenta, samen met de andere grote pesticidenproducenten BASF, Bayer en

Corteva, en hun lobbygroep CropLife Europe, verzetten zich tegen elke bindende doelstelling voor de
vermindering van pesticiden die ook maar enige ambitie heeft. Hun acties kunnen ertoe leiden dat
boeren opgesloten blijven in een gebroken landbouwsysteem dat duidelijk niet toekomstbestendig is.
Maatschappelijke organisaties kijken reikhalzend uit naar een voorstel voor pesticidenreductie dat de
Commissie naar verwachting in de komende dagen zal afronden.

Door hiertegen in actie te komen, willen de organisaties ook alternatieve wegen voor de toekomst van
het voedselsysteem promoten. Manuel Eggen, van FIAN Belgium, legt uit: "Om kwaliteitsvoeding voor
iedereen, menswaardige levensomstandigheden voor de boeren in het Noorden en in het Zuiden, en
landbouwpraktijken die zorg dragen voor de natuur te garanderen, verdedigen wij agro-ecologie,
boerenlandbouw en voedselsoevereiniteit. Deze staan diametraal tegenover de modellen en
oplossingen die de agro-industrie verdedigt.” Volgens Astrid Ayral van de landbouwvakbond FUGEA
"heeft een forum dat door multinationals wordt georganiseerd en waarin de boeren geen centrale
plaats krijgen, geen legitimiteit om over de toekomst van de landbouw te spreken."

This 15th of March in Brussels, about 50 agricultural, environmental and international solidarity
organizations are mobilizing against the Forum for the Future of Agriculture (FFA) organized by the
chemical and agri-food industry. Farmers and their allies denounce the holding of a greenwashing
event aimed at strengthening the influence of the chemical and agri-food industry on public policies.

Next to The Square conference center, where the FFA is taking place, activists will organise symbolic
and visual actions, speeches and a farmers' market. Those actions will illustrate the dead ends of
agribusiness and highlight possible alternatives. The organizers of this mobilization intend to remind
the political leaders invited to the FFA, including the Vice-President of the European Commission in
charge of the Green Deal, Frans Timmermans, and the Commissioner for Health and Food Safety,
Stella Kyriakides, that civil society expects from them a fair and ambitious policy for an
agro-ecological transition of food systems. Recently, 1.2 million European citizens signed the petition
"Save the bees and the farmers", in which they ask for an 80% reduction of synthetic pesticides by
2030, a gradual elimination of synthetic pesticides in Europe by 2035, and a strong support to farmers
in their transition towards agroecology.

Since the EU Farm to Fork Strategy was launched in May 2020, the pesticide industry and big farming
lobby have staged a massive lobby campaign to undermine it. Syngenta, along with the other big
pesticide producers BASF, Bayer and Corteva, and its lobby group CropLife Europe, oppose any
binding pesticide reduction target that has any ambition. Their actions could lead farmers to stay
locked in a broken farming system that is clearly not future-proof. Civil society organizations are
eagerly awaiting a proposal for pesticide reduction that the Commission is expected to finalize in the
coming days.

By mobilizing against this event, the organizations also wish to promote alternative paths for the future
of the food system. Manuel Eggen, from FIAN Belgium, explains: "In order to guarantee quality food
for all, dignified living conditions for farmers in the North and in the South, and agricultural practices
that take care of nature, we defend agroecology, peasant agriculture and food sovereignty, which are
at odds with the models and solutions defended by agribusiness. According to Astrid Ayral of the
agricultural union FUGEA: "a forum organized by multinationals and which does not give a central
place to farmers has no legitimacy to talk about the future of agriculture."
