W ending its way along the bottom of the wooded slopes, the river Aulne provides some
stunning views. From Trégarvan to Port-Launay and from Port-Launay to Lennon,
wander along the meanders of the Aulne Maritime and on to the canal section and discover
the amazing diversity of its landscapes!
Ever since its creation in the 19th century, the Nantes-Brest canal has boasted a long history of contributing to
Brittany’s economic development. The first stone of the first lock – no longer in existence – was laid between
Châteaulin and Port-Launay on 7 September 1811. The canal was opened to navigation in 1836. For almost a century,
it constituted a vital transportation route for the interior of Brittany, which particularly benefitted the slate industry
and agriculture. But this economic role was short-lived. Competition from road and rail transport ruined all hopes
of development based on the canal. The construction of the hydroelectric dam at Guerlédan in 1923 precipated the
decline in the western section of the canal. This peaceful stretch of water covering 5 départements (365 km),with
its 238 locks is nowadays used solely for pleasure boating activities, by yachtsmen and the traditional old barges
including the Notre-dame de Rumengol, as well as fishermen, joggers, hikers, cyclists and horseriders, thanks to the
towpaths (on either side) running alongside the entire canal.Set off to explore this magnificent historical heritage, and
as you avail yourselves of a rest at picnic areas along the way. You’ll be captivated by the charm of its gentle curves
and langourous banks!

U ltimate land of bike and hike, you will godown the Aulne river in a part of Finistere from
Chateaulin to Carhaix. You will have the choice between the surfacing or stabilized
towpath (90 km with very little difference in elevation on the part of Finistere) or take the
grassed opposite side to the towpath (80 km with very little difference in elevation).
The Nantes-Brest canal is a marvelous playground for walks and hiking. Hikers, horse riders and cyclists can practice
their passion safely, away from cars. They find lots of facilities to rest, to discover nature, and to have nice picnics with
tables fitted on the way.

The barge The Victor – Pont Ti Menn (Gouézec)
It is one of the last remains of barge transport on the canal. In 1932 this barge, loaded with 100 tons of slate, struck
the bridge at Pont Ti Menn and sank. For 70 years it suffered in the depths of the canal, stuck in the mud. In October
2003 a group “Save the Victor” decided to try and bring it back to life. After three weeks of labor, involving a lot of
elbow grease, the Victor was relieved of the 300 tons of mud and came back up to the surface. Today the group of
enthusiasts are still working on it.

north. Once you reach the top, the view is stunning. The highest point of the montagnes noires two of the seven sacred mountains
(black mountains), it provides a magnificent panoramic view over the Crozon peninsula, the bay of Armorique
of Douarnenez, the bay of Brest and the hills of the Monts d’Arrée.
At 480 million years old, this is one of the oldest and highest points in Brittany. The Menez-Hom was a
sacred hilltop where the cult of sun worshipping was celebrated, as can be seen from the mounds of stone.
The Menez-Hom also went on to become a strategic point as it was possible for a look-out to watch over the region and
keep an eye out for warnings from the island of Ouessant (Ushant). Whether the threat came from Normans, pirates or
the English, it would be alerted by a beacon and then in turn would light another one to pass on the signal of danger. The
Menez-Hom still bears the nickname “Yed”– meaning look-out relating to those times. Over the centuries, it has also
become a place for fairs and very famous pardons.
In 2007, the “site Natura 2000 – complexe du Menez-Hom-Argol” came into being. This site incorporates 5 communes:
Dinéault, Plomodiern, Saint-Nic, Trégarvan and Argol. The Natura 2000 site was set up to preserve the biodiversity of the
Menez-Hom, and in particular its heathland and peat-bog landscapes, as well as the Sphagnum pylaseii moss and the
Quimper snail, two species of community interest that are to be found on its slopes. In 2014, the site was designated as “natural
heritage” for its wildlife. This classification has enabled it to be protected without interfering too much with the sporting or
leisure activities such as hang-gliding, model-aircraft flying or paragliding that are so popular on the Menez-Hom.
The Menez-Hom is also the starting point for walks and beautiful rambles, especially narrated ones during the summer.£
With its unique flora and discrete fauna, this is also a vulnerable site, so please respect the environment as you walk!

During the summer, sheep graze these slopes - Landes de
Bretagne and Avranchines breeds, (which can be traced back
to crossbreeding with Suffolks!) They are both well adapted
to grazing on local heather and gorse, and by keeping the
land more open, and also contribute to the wellbeing of
the other local flora and fauna. They overwinter at the
sheep farm near Dinéault. In the context of the Natura 2000
program, grazing helps to maintain open habitats, promotes
biodiversity and prevents fires.

The megaliths, 5 000 years ago
Yes, there are plenty of megalithic treasures in Brittany.
In our territory, so keep your eyes open! Various traces
of history are visible like menhirs ( at the Tal Ar Grip
point-Plomodiern and at Pleyben), standing stones dating
back from the Iron age like at Ploéven, dolmens like
Menez-Lié (Saint-Nic) or tumuli (burial mounds) and the
remains of stone circles on the Menez-Hom.

The standing stone of Sainte-Barbe
The standing stone of Sainte-Barbe at Ploéven dates
from the Iron Age (450 BC). Undoubtedly used at the
end of various celtic ceremonial ceremonies, the stone
was‘christianised’ by having a cross carved on it in the 6th
century. Nowadays the custom is for young couples who
are looking to get married to throw a pebble on to the top
of the standing stone - if they are successful their wish
will come true…

coast from Mont Saint-Michel to the Golf of Morbihan,
over 1800 km. From Pentrez to Kervel, it offers you 16km
of wild coast and a stunning view on the sea. It’s an
all-season footpath but the best period is from the end of
April to mid-October when the days are longer and the
flora has burst into life! Walking along the GR34 is one of
the best ways to discover Brittany and breathe its crisp
    air. Live an unforgettable experience!
