Une autobiographie tragique du corps

ANECKXANDER est un solo épuré. Une nuque à rallonge, un surnom qui lui colle à la peau, quelques
objets choisis avec soin et trois variations d’un morceau de piano d’Arvo Pärt. Drôle ou tragique ?
Alexander/Aneckxander réécrit l’autobiographie de son propre corps en l'identifiant
alternativement comme sujet, objet ou matière. Le résultat est un autoportrait cru dans lequel le
corps à la fois se dénude et tente d’échapper au regard de ceux qui le regardent.

BIO

Alexander Vantournhout (Roulers, 1989) a étudié la danse contemporaine à P.A.R.T.S.
(Performing Arts Research and Training Studios, Bruxelles) et la roue simple à l’ESAC (École
Supérieure des Arts du Cirque, Bruxelles). Il a travaillé en tant qu’acteur avec Rolf Alme,
fondateur du Norwegian Theatre Academy, Fredrickstadt (NO). Tout en donnant la priorité à son
travail artistique, Alexander enseigne à l’ESAC et l’ACAPA (Academy for Circus and Performance
Art, Tilburg, NL). Il est l’auteur de deux solos : Caprices (2014), un solo chorégraphique d’une
heure en hommage à la musique de Salvatore Sciarrino, et Don’t run away, John (2012) une
performance avec Niko Hafkenscheid (musicien Meg Stuart, Kopergietery, … ). Depuis 2014,
Alexander improvise en compagnie de Harald Austbo (Heimat, Skagen). Leur collaboration la
plus récente s’appelle WAK (2014).
Bauke Lievens (Gand, 1985) collabore en tant que dramaturge avec diverses compagnies de
cirque, théâtre et danse. Elle a travaillé notamment avec Un loup pour l’homme (FR), les ballets
C de la B/ Kaori Ito (BE) et le jeune collectif de théâtre gantois Tibaldus en andere hoeren. Elle a
étudié les sciences du spectacle à l’Université de Gand, puis la philosophie de l’art contemporain
à l’Université Autonome de Barcelone (ES). Bauke est enseignante et chercheuse au sein de la
formation en théâtre de KASK School of Arts (Gent, BE). Elle y effectue un projet de recherche
sur les méthodes de recherche artistique utilisées dans les créations de cirque contemporain.
Elle fait depuis peu également partie de la rédaction de Etcetera.
Alexander Vantournhout et Bauke Lievens se sont rencontrés en 2011. Après un certain
temps d’accoutumance qui a été nécessaire pour découvrir et comprendre leurs fortes opinions
réciproques, ils ont décidé en 2014 de se lancer dans une première collaboration. Ainsi,
ANECKXANDER est en quelque sorte un faux solo. Le spectacle est le résultat d’un intense
dialogue avec Alexander sur et Bauke devant la scène. En présentant une courte version de
travail de ANECKXANDER, ils ont été choisis en 2014 comme lauréats de CircusNext,
prestigieuse plateforme européenne pour jeunes talents circassiens.

Een tragische autobiografie van het lichaam

ANECKXANDER is een solo in minimale setting voor één acrobatisch lichaam, een handvol
zorgvuldig gekozen objecten en drie variaties op stukje pianomuziek van Arvo Pärt. Balancerend
op de fijne grens tussen tragedie en komisch effect, herschrijft Alexander/Aneckxander de
autobiografie van zijn eigen lichaam: van subject over object, tot materie. Wat ontstaat is een rauw
zelfportret waarin het lichaam zich tegelijk blootstelt en tracht te ontsnappen aan de blik van hen
die kijken.

Alexander Vantournhout (Roeselare, 1989) studeerde enkel rad aan ESAC (Ecole Supérieure
des Arts du Cirque, Brussel) en hedendaagse dans aan P.A.R.T.S. (Performing Arts and Research
Studios, Brussel). Als acteur werkte hij bij Rolf Alme (NO), oprichter van de Norwegian Theater
Academy, Fredrickstadt (NO). Naast de focus op zijn eigen werk, is Alexander tevens verbonden
als docent aan ESAC en ACAPA (Academy for Circus and Performance Art, Tilburg, NL).
Alexander creëerde een aantal solo’s: Caprices (2014), een avondvullende choreografische solo
en hommage aan de muziek van Salvatore Sciarrino en eerder Don’t run away, John (2012) een
performance met Niko Hafkenscheid (muzikant Meg Stuart, Kopergietery, … ). Sinds 2014
improviseert Alexander samen met Harald Austbo (Heimat, Skagen). Hun meest recente
samenwerking heet WAK (2014).
Bauke Lievens (Gent, 1985) werkt als dramaturge voor diverse circus-, dans- en
theatergezelschappen. In het verleden werkte ze o.a. met Cie Un loup pour l’homme (FR), les
ballets C de la B/Kaori Ito (BE) en het jonge Gentse theatercollectief Tibaldus en andere
hoeren. Ze studeerde Theaterwetenschappen aan de Ugent en Filosofie van de hedendaagse
kunst aan de Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (ES). Bauke is als docent en onderzoeker
verbonden aan de Drama-opleiding van KASK School of Arts (Gent). Momenteel werkt ze,
eveneens aan KASK School of Arts, aan een vierjarig onderzoeksproject over de methodes voor
artistiek onderzoek in de creatie van hedendaagse circusvoorstellingen. Sinds kort maakt Bauke
deel uit van de vernieuwde redactie van Etcetera.

Alexander Vantournhout en Bauke Lievens ontmoetten elkaar in 2011. Na een aanvankelijke
schrik voor elkaars bijzonder stellige meningen, besloten ze in 2014 om zich te wagen aan een
eerste samenwerking. ANECKXANDER is in die zin een faux solo. De voorstelling is het resultaat
van een intense dialoog, waarin Alexander op en Bauke voor de scène staat. Met de korte work-
in-progress versie van ANECKXANDER werden ze in 2014 laureaat van Circus Next, een
prestigieus Europees platform voor jong circustalent.

A tragic autobiography of the body

ANECKXANDER is a solo in a minimal setting for one acrobatic body, a handful of carefully selected
objects and three variations on a piece of piano music by Arvo Pärt. Balancing on the fine line
between tragedy and comedy, Alexander/Aneckxander rewrites the autobiography of his own body:
from subject to object to matter. The result is a raw self-portrait in which the body both exposes
itself to and tries to escape from the prying eyes of those looking at it.

Alexander Vantournhout (Roeselare, 1989) studied contemporary dance at P.A.R.T.S.
(Performing Arts and Research Studios, Brussels) and single wheel at ESAC (Ecole Supérieure
des Arts du Cirque, Brussels). He has worked with Rolf Alme (NO), founder of the Norwegian
Theater Academy, Fredrickstadt (NO), as an actor and, in addition to focusing on his own work,
Alexander also lectures at ESAC and ACAPA (Academy for Circus and Performance Art, Tilburg,
NL). He has created a number of solos including Caprices (2014), an evening filled with a
choreographic solo and homage to the music of Salvatore Sciarrino, and Don’t run away, John
(2012), a performance with Niko Hafkenscheid (musician Meg Stuart, Kopergietery, … ). In 2014
Alexander joined forces with Harald Austbo (Heimat, Skagen) to further develop his interest in
improvisation. Their most recent collaboration is called WAK (2014).
Bauke Lievens (Ghent, 1985) works as a dramaturge for various circus, dance and theatre
companies. In the past she has worked with Cie Un loup pour l’homme (FR), Kaori Ito/les ballets
C de la B (JAP/BE) and the young Ghent theatre collective Tibaldus en andere hoeren, among
others. She studied Theatre Sciences at UGent and Philosophy of Contemporary Art at the
Universitat Autonoma de Barcelona (ES). Bauke is a lecturer and researcher with the Drama
department of KASK School of Arts (Ghent). She is currently working on a four-year research
project at KASK School of Arts investigating the methods for artistic research into the creation of
contemporary circus performances. Bauke recently joined the new editorial board of Etcetera.

Alexander Vantournhout and Bauke Lievens met in 2011. After initially being horrified by
each other’s very strongly held opinions, they finally took the plunge and worked together in
2014. ANECKXANDER is therefore a faux solo. The performance is the result of an intense
dialogue in which Alexander is on stage and Bauke is in the wings. With the short work-in-
progress version of ANECKXANDER they were chosen as a 2014 laureate by Circus Next, a
prestigious European platform for talented young circus artists.
