The magic valley/La vallée magique
Until the opening of the Lötschberg tunnel in 1913, the Lötschental was very difficult to
reach. A lot of originality remained unspoiled, since the Lötschental was only opened up to
tourism at a late stage. Big concrete and luxury hotel buildings still have no space here to-
day; instead, there are original houses with aphorisms on facades decorated with antique
notched patterns. The Lötschental is therefore a real jewel for guests seeking inspiration and
relaxation in nature. Cosy hotels, chalets, holiday apartments, mountain huts, mountain
cottages, group accommodation and camp sites - the variety of types of a commodati-
on is representative of the diversity of the primeval valley. Today, the Lötschental is well
developed for tourism - both in summer and winter. In winter, our guests can enjoy the
Lauchernalp ski area, which is extremely snow safe. In summer, the Lötschental is a great
starting point for wonderful hiking tours. Tourism in the Lötschental is divided into five
political communities: Steg-Hohtenn, Feden, Kippel, Wiler and Blatten. Each village has its
own character and charisma.
Jusqu‘à l‘ouverture du tunnel du Lötschberg en 1913, le Lötschental était très diffi-
cile à atteindre. Une grande partie des vestiges d‘origine de la vallée, qui n‘a été ou-
verte au tourisme qu‘à un stade tardif. Aujourd‘hui encore, il n‘y a pas de place pour
les loges en béton et les hôtels de luxe, mais des maisons originales avec des apho-
rismes sur les façades décorées de motifs dentelés antiques. Le Lötschental est
donc un véritable bijou pour les hôtes en quête d‘inspiration et de détente dans la
nature. Hôtels, chalets, appartements de vacances, refuges de montagne, chalets
de montagne, gîtes de montagne, hébergements de groupes et campings - la diver-
sité des types d‘hébergement est représentative de la diversité de la vallée vierge.
Aujourd‘hui, le Lötschental est bien développé pour le tourisme, été comme hiver. En hiver,
nos hôtes peuvent profiter du domaine skiable de Lauchernalp, qui est extrêmement en-
neigé. En été, le Lötschental est le point de départ de magnifiques randonnées. Le touris-
me dans le Lötschental est divisé en cinq communautés politiques: Steg-Hohtenn Ferden,
Kippel, Wiler et Blatten. Chaque village a son caractère et son charisme propres.

Ferden, 1‘375 m Ferden is the first village in the Lötschental and is therefore the gateway to the most unspoilt alpine valley. After Blatten it is the largest village in the Lötschental in terms of area. It is particularly worth visiting Ferden‘s old village centre, where some buildings date back to the 14th and 15th centuries and provide evidence of the architecture and construction methods of this era. Ferden est le premier village du Lötschental et constitue ainsi la porte d’accès à la vallée la plus authentique des Alpes. Du point de vue de la superficie, c’est le plus grand village du Lötschental après Blatten. Le coeur historique du village vaut vraiment la peine d’être visité. Les bâtiments remontent en partie aux 14ème et 15ème siècles et témoignent encore de l’architecture et de méthodes de construction de l‘époque. Kippel, 1‘376 m It is worth paying a visit to the old part of Kippel with its ornamental timber façades and St. Martin‘s Church, which dates back to the 16th century. As the unofficial cultural capital of the Lötschental, Kippel is especi- ally popular with all cultural enthusiasts. For visitors with an interest in history, a visit to the Lötschental Museum, which transports visitors into a world of alpine traditions and customs, is worthwhile. À Kippel, vous devez absolument visiter la partie ancienne du village avec ses belles façades en bois et son église Saint-Martin du 16ème siècle. Considérée inofficiellement comme la capitale culturelle du Löt- schental, Kippel est particulièrement appréciée par les amateurs de culture de tous genres. Si vous vous intéressez à l’histoire, ne manquez pas de visiter le Musée du Lötschental qui transporte ses visiteurs dans le monde des traditions et des coutumes alpines. Wiler, 1‘419 m Right at the very heart of the Lötschental lies Wiler, the perfect holiday destination for active holidayma- kers and families. Wiler is the starting point of the cable car to the Lauchernalp at a height of 1,970 m above sea level. The Lauchernalp offers a wonderful skiing and winter sports area ideal for hikers and ramblers of all levels. Niché dans le coeur du Lötschental, Wiler est l’endroit idéal pour les amateurs de vacances actives et pour les familles. Wiler est le point de départ du téléphérique qui grimpe jusqu’à 1970 m d’altitude sur la Lau- chernalp. Vous trouverez là une magnifique région qui fait le bonheur des skieurs et autres amateurs de sports d‘hiver de tous niveaux. 8
Blatten, 1‘540 m ü.M.
Blatten is the village furthest up the Lötschental. Timber houses tanned by the sun and covered by stone
slates, typical Valais granaries, unspoilt nature with diverse flora and fauna: the fact that the Lötschental is
a world unto itself can be seen and felt today at every turn. Nevertheless staying in Blatten doesn‘t mean
missing out on anything. The locals know how to juggle long-established traditions with modern tourism.
Blatten est le dernier village du Lötschental. Avec ses maisons en bois noircies par le soleil et recouvertes
de dalles en pierre, ses greniers valaisans typiques, sa nature intacte et l’incroyable diversité de sa faune
et de sa flore, il est bien la preuve irréfutable que le Lötschental est un monde bien à part. Ici on sait très
bien concilier les bonnes vieilles traditions et le tourisme moderne.
Steg - Hohtenn, 640 m ü.M.
The village of Steg lies at the southern end of the Lötschental valley, bordering the Lonza River to the
west. The village of Hohtenn is situated on a terrace at the eastern end of the Lötschental valley about
200 metres above the Rhone valley and offers a beautiful view of the Rhone valley. Visit the beauti-
ful villages and the indoor swimming pool in Steg, which is free of charge with the Lötschental Card.
Le village de Steg se trouve à l‘extrémité sud de la vallée du Lötschental, en bordure de la rivière Lonza à
l‘ouest. Le village de Hohtenn est situé sur une terrasse à l‘extrémité orientale de la vallée du Lötschental,
à environ 200 mètres au-dessus de la vallée du Rhône, et offre une belle vue sur la vallée du Rhône. Visitez
les beaux villages et la piscine couverte de Steg, qui est gratuite avec la Lötschental Card.

you are an occasional or advanced athlete, this course offers
something for you.

Tschäggättä
The remoteness of the Lötschental has given rise to a wealth of tales, legends
and myths. Wild figures that raced through the Lötschental‘s history and have
left their traces. It is they who were the origins of the Tschäggättä custom that
is still celebrated today. The masked carnival figures typical in the Lötschental,
the so-called Tschäggättä, appear in the period between the Catholic holiday
of Candlemass and Shrove Tuesday. Every evening these wild-looking figures
streak through the valley and hunt down and frighten anyone who is still out
on the streets.
Curious? Then experience this living tradition first-hand on February 24th 2022
at the traditional Tschäggättä procession or on February 26nd 2022 at the Löt-
schental carnival procession.
L’isolement de la vallée de Lötschen a donné naissance à un grand nombre de
contes, de légendes et de mythes. L’histoire du Lötschental fourmille de per-
sonnages sauvages qui ont laissé leurs empreintes. Ils sont à l’origine de la
coutume du Tschäggättä qui se célèbre encore aujourd’hui avec un amour tout
particulier pour les détails. Ces personnages carnavalesques masqués qui sont
caractéristiques du Lötschental, les «Tschäggättä», font leur apparition entre
la fête catholique de la Chandeleur et le mardi gras «Gigiszischtag». Tous les
soirs ces individus sauvages déferlent dans la vallée, effrayant tous ceux qui
ont encore l’audace de se trouver dans la rue à cette heure-là.
Nous avons éveillé votre curiosité? Alors, venez faire leur connaissance en as-
sistant, le 24 février 2022, au défilé traditionnel du Tschäggättä ou le 26 février
2022 au défilé de Carnaval.

More than 80 wooden masks offer an unbroken history of the development
of the basic traits of masking in the Lötschental since 1800 till to date. Ge-
nuine objects and films allow you to experience traditional costumes and
the historic uniforms of the „Soldiers of God“. On your tour you will also meet
religious art of old and ethnic art of today. You will witness the style of living,
alpine farming and tourism.
Le Musée du Lötschental est à la fois la mémoire et le centre culturel de la
vallée. Vous y découvrirez aussi bien des masques que des costumes tradi-
tionnels en passant par les uniformes des grenadiers. Vous aurez la surprise
de découvrir l’artisanat contemporain mais aussi la possibilité de vous im-

The „Blaue Stube“ is a world of discovery around the Carnival at Lötschental.
Using different themes, visitors immerge in an interactive world, which in-

Interested in history? Then pay a visit to the Blatten mill complex (incor-
porating a sawmill, a gristmill and a weaving mill) and the village oven. The
history of the building dates back to 1756.

Hiking around a unique mountain panorama
The Lötschental is one of the top hiking areas in the Valais with
200km marked hiking trails and the most beautiful valley en-
ding of the Alps. The Lötschental is a paradise for hikers of all
fitness levels. The fresh mountain air rounds up a hiking expe-
rience for body and mind.
Not only hikers are well catered in the Lötschental, mounta-
ineers and bikers as well find perfect surroundings. A special
leisure experience is the monster scooter downhill ride.
Randonnée dans un panorama unique
Le Lötschental est l‘un des meilleurs sites de randonnée du
Valais avec 200 km des sentiers balisés. Le Lötschental est un
paradis pour les randonneurs de tous les niveaux. L’air pur de
la montagne fait de la randonnée une expérience pour le corps
et l‘esprit.
Non seulement les randonneurs sont bien servis dans le Löt-
schental, mais aussi les randonneurs nordiques, les alpinistes
et les cyclistes. Une expérience spéciale est la descente en
monstre-trottinette.
Grenadiers
Ever heard of the Lötschental Grenadiers? Along with the
women in their bright-coloured Lötschental traditional
costumes they have been part of the solemn processions held
on Christian holidays since time immemorial. A piece of living
culture that is still celebrated today with love and a sense of
honour and one that the locals are happy to share with visitors

Grenadiers du Bon Dieu
Qui ne connaît pas les Grenadiers de Dieu du Lötschental? De
mémoire d’homme, ils font partie - même que les femmes avec
leurs magnifiques costumes traditionnels du Lötschental - des
processions qui ont lieu lors des grandes fêtes religieuses.
Une part de notre héritage culturel que nous célébrons avec
beaucoup d’amour et de respect et que nous sommes heureux
