by Anna Lee C.Iijimash (USA), September 2018 Cornas Arènes Sauvages 2011 Score: 94 + Editor’s Choice - “While ripe black-cherry and plum flavors are lavish here, striking acidity and a firm mineral backbone lend grace to this full-bodied red. Perfumed with notes of violet, smoke and truffle, it’s a complex, composed wine that should improve through 2030 and hold further.” Hermitage Red Grand Classique 2014 Score: 93 + Editor’s Choice - “Hints of charcuterie and dried fennel lend savory complexity to pristine black-plum and cherry flavors on the medium-bodied and supple palate. It’s edged by firm but dusty tannins and a peppery freshness. Approachable but very elegant now, it should improve through 2016 and hold further.” Septembre 2018

Elle ne manque pas de concentration avec des tanins solides mais fins. Highly Recommended Cave de Tain, Epsilon, Hermitage Red, 93pts A benchmark Hermitage: the deep, herbal Szechuan pepper and sandalwood tones that mingle with lush blackberry fruit show this really is ‘the iron fist in the velvet glove’. A concentrated, almost explosive example with a mineral seam running into the finish. Drink 2022-2033 Cave de Tain, Grand Classique, Hermitage Red, 92pts Cassis coalesces with liquorice and aniseed on the nose and flows onto a plush cherry fruit palate. Youthful with an uncompromisingly tannic structure, piercing acidity and a finely etched savoury undertow. This will need time to come alive. Drink 2023-2033 Février 2018
Northern Rhône : The Blockbuster 2015s and Elegant 2016s – January 24, 2018 2015 Cave de Tain Hermitage Epsilon rouge Rating 98 « The Top cuvée from this superb co-op, the 2015 Hermitage Epsilon comes from equal parts Méal and l’Hermite. It offers a sensational perfume of blackberry liqueur, cassis, burning embers, pen ink and graphite. Enormously concentrated, rich and powerful, with building tannin, it has a bloody, salty quality on the finish and could come from nowhere else than these magical slopes. It’s more approachable than the 2010 was at this age, yet needs to be forgotten for 7-8 years. » 2015 Cave de Tain Hermitage Gambert de Loche rouge Rating 95 2015 Cave de Tain Hermitage Grand Classique rouge Rating 91 2015 Cave de Tain Cornas Arènes sauvages rouge Rating 92 2015 Cave de Tain Crozes-Hermitage Les Hauts du Fief rouge Rating 93+ 2015 Cave de Tain Crozes-Hermitage LA Terroirs d’Exception rouge Rating 93 2015 Cave de Tain Crozes-Hermitage Nord Terroirs d’Exception rouge Rating 92 2015 Cave de Tain Crozes-Hermitage BM Terroirs d’Exception rouge Rating 90+ 2015 Cave de Tain Saint-Joseph Esprit de Granit rouge Rating 92 2015 Cave de Tain Saint-Joseph Grand Classique rouge Rating 89 Janvier 2018

Matt Walls, December 2017 : St-Péray, Fleur de Roc 2016 “Very fresh and breezy on the nose, with a whiff of blossom and a touch of almond. It’s rounded in mouthfeel, showing good weight and balanced acidity alongside sappy.“ 93/100 Jefford on Monday : Value in the Langhe – July 10, 2017 “I love to buy good wine, but I’m not rich. The top wines of outperforming co-operatives offer some of the best value in today’s wine world. In particular, when you find a great co-operative in a classic region, then you can call on an unrivalled source of affordable, dependable wine from proven terroir, as the wines of Cave de Tain in Tain l’Hermitage will know.” Jefford on Monday : Value from a great vintage – March 20, 2017 Tasting notes for Crozes-Hermitage 2015, arguing that the appellation offers some of the best value in this highly Rhône vintage : Cave de Tain, Grand Classique Crozes-Hermitage white 2015 : The Cave de Tain produces almost half of the entire appellation of Crozes-Hermitage, so it’s a cause of celebration that it does so adeptly and proficiently. This pure Marsanne is made in a lighter, fresher style than many of its peers – but, in the Cave de Tain’s hands, that restraint works well: a gust of blossom on the nose, and tingling white summer fruits on the palate with a lemony core. Sappy, fresh and poised, without a trace of bitterness. 90 Terroir from the Cave de Tain “The outstanding co-operative Cave de Tain produces around half of Crozes-Hermitage, and it has growers in every sector of the appellation. It now produces a series of five different sub-regional cuvées (three Terroirs d’Exception and two Sélections Parcellaires) in order to showcase the appellation’s internal terroir differences. The 2015 versions are not yet bottled, but here are notes and provisional scores on these fascinating wines. Their enigmatic names reflect the fact that village names are outlawed on Crozes-Hermitage labels.
Jefford on Monday : Value from a great vintage – March 20, 2017 TERROIRS D’EXCEPTION SELECTIONS PARCELLAIRES Nord Les Hauts du Fief 2015 This wine comes from the granite slopes of the northern part of the appellation This wine in 2015 is a blend of fruit from the La Négociale vineyards in Chassis around Gervans. Its oak is evident at this stage, but it’s balanced with a bright, pebble soils with other components from Larnage and Gervans … so you’d expect a balanced palate. And it is: full-fleshed and lush yet with neatly seamed singing core of vivid, almost crunchy blackcurrant fruit: fresh and zesty. [89] fruit. Classic smoky blackcurrant scents, too. [92] LA The name here indicated the kaolin-soiled slopes of Larnage. There’s less overt oak La Beaume 2015 here, but lots of pungent fruit — pippy raspberry as well as the darker There is a Hermitage site of this name, but the source here is a single hillside in blackcurrants. It’s also fresh and pungent in style, with a Valrhona hint to the suave Chanos-Curson. It basked in the 2015 sunshine, evidently: there are fleshy, spicy scents and dense, rich, chewy flavours with almost brambly fruit, as if the tannins. [91] wine were glancing down to Bandol. Fine tannins, too, and typical Crozes generosity. [93] BM This is from Beaumont-Monteux, the vines growing on the flatland pebbles tossed about by the Isère in the past. It’s not as tight-sewn a wine as Nord is; instead you can revel in the classic Chassis generosity of fruit, and its softly smoky richness. [91] Mars 2017
Issue May, 2017 Saint-Péray White Grand Classique 2015 Score: 91 + Editor’s Choice - “A fine value for a northern Rhône of this quality, this bottling from the Tain cooperative is full bodied and ripe, but with enough acidity for balance. John Livingstone-Learmonth MW reports 2015 2015 *** SAINT PERAY FLEUR DE ROC pale yellow, green tints. Apricot, peach airs start the bouquet, which comes with notions of dried fruits, a little salt and aniseed. The palate bears a pear-peach flavour, with some white plum skin, and grip from that, as it closes, quietly. OK, but not arresting: it is light, and closes neutrally. 13.5°. To 2020 2015 ** (* ) SAINT PERAY GRAND CLASSIQUE pale yellow. There is a soft air of pear, a note of licorice, aniseed. It’s a clearly defined nose. The palate gives a low-key run of peach fruit with a quiet, near neutral close, perhaps a little nuttiness there. This is really light in the context of the vintage. 13.5°. To 2019 2015 ** (* ) CROZES GRAND CLASSIQUE ROUGE (vat/casks) dark robe; the nose is still tight, has a black berry and licorice combo, is a compact affair. The palate bears dark fruits with tangy tannins that have a point of keen freshness. The aftertaste is a bit dry, spartan. Workmanlike Crozes, does the job, not more. I’d like a more rich close. 13°. From mid-2017. 2021 2015 ** (* ) CROZES GRAND CLASSIQUE BLANC fine, shiny yellow. There is a soft mix of pear fruit and spring flowers on the nose, which is very orderly, has lift. The palate is on the instant, is brief: there is a mild display of white fruits with some pear, white strawberry, quince touches. But it’s lightweight against the domaine whites of this vintage, a tame offering. Aperitif style wine. 13.5°. To 2019 2015 *** (* ) CROZES BM (1-2 year 400-litre casks) dark red robe. The nose has an agile aroma of blackberry and raspberry fruit, shows mild sweetness. The palate picks up on the sweet, easy red fruited theme. The tannins are mild, within. It’s not as racy and exuberant as many Beaumont-Monteux wines. 13.5°. From 2018. 2024-25 2015 **** CROZES LA GRACE (oak vat) dark robe. The bouquet gives a clear, cool tang of blueberry fruit, notes od sea shore. It pings with clarity. The palate links very well, carries blue fruit once more with wet stones, mossy implants. It’s subtle, but nicely sustained, with chewiness on the aftertaste. I like its intricacy. From mid-2019. 13.5°. 2026-28 2015 *** (* ) HAUTS D EOLE fine yellow. The nose gives a good duo of flowers and soft fruit airs such as peach near the stone, quince plum, with a light lime thread that brings freshness. The palate is soft and restrained, comes with carbonic gas, also bears a white flowers imprint, with greengage fruit, and an all round precision. It’s pretty New Wave in style, drinks easily, gives a good aperitif, and has enough late body for poultry, steamed fish. 13.5°. To 2020 2015 **** HAUTS DU FIEF (casks) dark, full robe. The nose comes out with vigour, based on sleek Morello black cherry fruit and oak with its varnish, some beefy depth. It can be shapely in time. The palate bears savoury, well fuelled black fruit content, with a ripe tannic structure that help it to live and evolve. It has good balance, will make gradual progress. The tarry-oaked aftertaste needs leaving until mid-2019. 13°. 2027-28 Octobre 2016
Jefford on Monday : The Crozes Crusader – July 18, 2016 “The canny investor : I visited many vinification cellars in my lifetime … - but I’ve never seen one as ingenious, complex and intricately engineered as that which the Cave de Tain installed …Anyone interested in cellar technicalities should make an appointment to visit” […] The desirable partner “The northern Rhône is lucky, of course, in the high standards of its leading négociant producers … – but can any of them match the Cave de Tain for value, cent for cent ? If so, only occasionally. Moreover, I’ve taken part in blind tastings of Hermitage rouge itself which reveal the Cave de Tain’s bottlings can compete head-to-head with leading producer’s top ‘parcellaire’ wines.
