BIENVENUE À LA 28E ÉDITION DU CHAMPIONNAT DES GRANDS MAÎTRES VIOLONEUX
DU CANADA.
Ce fut un honneur et privilège de diriger ce comité organisateur. Nous sommes excités à l’idée d’accueillir Les
Maîtres, couleur Québec pour la première fois au Québec en 28 ans d’histoire. Nous espérons que vous aurez
l’occasion de découvrir les nombreux sites et attractions que notre magnifique province a à vous offrir pendant
votre séjour.
Nous avons réuni 30 des meilleurs violoneux du Canada. Nous souhaitons bonne chance à tous les compétiteurs
rassemblés ici, qui se disputeront le titre du champion canadien des Grands Maîtres Violoneux 2017.
Même si notre comité s’est dévoué à vous préparer une fin de semaine inoubliable, son succès ne peut être atteint
sans l’aide financière de nos partenaires, l’engagement de nos bénévoles et vous, les membres du public, pour
votre présence; nous vous remercions tous pour votre soutien.
Nous tenons également à remercier l’ACGMV pour l’opportunité offerte d’accueillir cette compétition chez nous.
Merci à la Saskatchewan (2013), au Nouveau-Brunswick (2015) et à l’Alberta (2016) de nous avoir montré le chemin.

WELCOME TO THE 28TH EDITION OF THE CANADIAN GRAND MASTERS FIDDLING
COMPETITION.
It was an honour and privilege to lead this organizing committee. We are excited to host Les Maîtres, couleur Qué-
bec for the first time in the province of Quebec in 28 years. We hope you have the chance to discover the sights
and attractions our magnificent region has to offer during your stay here.
We have gathered 30 of the best fiddlers in Canada. We wish good luck to all the contestants joining us, who will
compete for the title of 2017 Canadian Grand Master.
Even if our committee worked passionately to plan an unforgettable weekend, it success would be unattainable
without the financial help of our partners, the devotion of our volunteers and all of you, members of the audience,
for your presence; thank you for your support.
We would also like to thank the CGMFA for giving us the opportunity to host this event here. Thanks to Saska-
tchewan (2013), New Brunswick (2015) and Alberta (2016) for leading the way. We hope to see all of you in beau-
tiful Ontario in August 2018, at the 29th edition.

MOT DU MAIRE MESSAGE FROM THE MAYOR DANS LA PURE TRADITION Salaberry-de-Valleyfield est l’hôte d’un événement de grande envergure dans la tradition musicale de notre pa- trimoine culturel national : la salle Albert-Dumouchel de Valspec reçoit la prestigieuse Compétition des Grands Maîtres Violoneux du Canada. Cet événement qui se tient habituellement hors Québec sort de son nid pour atterrir chez nous à l’instigation de violoneux d’ici, dont Michel Mallette, qui a réuni une formidable équipe de bénévoles qui sauront accueillir avec grande distinction les dizaines d’aspirants champions venant de partout au Canada. Ce n’est pas un hasard que notre ville, comme capitale régionale du Suroît, ait été choisie pour recevoir cette compétition. Il y a chez nous, comme dans toute notre grande région, une tradition du violon qui s’est incrustée et perpétuée au travers la vie familiale des gens qui ont bâti notre coin de pays. Le conseil municipal est heureux de s’associer à cet important événement et salue tous les visiteurs qui ont choisi de venir à notre rencontre pour nous connaître davantage. Le conseil remercie aussi tous ces bénévoles qui ont pris l’initiative de soumettre la candidature de Salaberry-de-Valleyfield pour accueillir la 28e édition de cette com- pétition. Bon week-end à tous et toutes. WITHIN TRADITIONS Salaberry-de-Valleyfield is hosting a major event celebrating the musical tradition of our national cultural heritage. The Albert-Dumouchel theatre will be the stage of the prestigious Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Competition. This event, which is usually held outside of Quebec has landed here, by the initiative of local fiddlers, such as Mi- chel Mallette, who formed an incredible team of volunteers who will welcome with great diligence the 30 aspiring champions from across Canada. It is not a coincidence that our city, as the Suroit’s regional capital, was selected to host this competition. There is here, as well as in our whole region, a tradition of fiddling that has set its roots and carried through generations of people, the same who have built the place we call home. The city council is happy to be a partner of this important event and would like to extend a warm welcome to all of you, who have decided to visit us. The council also thanks all the volunteers who have taken the time to submit Salaberry-de-Valleyfield as the host of the 28th edition of the competition. Have a great weekend in our region. CHERS VIOLONEUX ET AMATEURS DE MUSIQUE TRADITIONNELLE,
Bienvenue à la Compétition des Grands Maîtres Violoneux du Canada 2017. L’ACGMV est très heureuse de présen-
ter la 28e édition de cet événement au Québec. La musique des violoneux traditionnels canadiens a des racines
importantes au Québec. En fait, depuis ses tous débuts, et encore de nos jours, le style des violoneux québécois
se démarque au Canada, mais aussi à travers le monde. Aujourd’hui, des compétiteurs de partout au Canada se
réunissent pour se disputer le titre de «Grand Maître canadien».
Au nom du conseil d’administration, je tiens à remercier le comité hôte, la Ville de Salaberry-de-Valleyfield et le
réseau de violoneux du Québec. Ceux-ci reconnaissent l’importance de la musique traditionnelle au sein du tissu
social du Canada et c’est pourquoi la compétition se tient cette année au Québec.
La CGMFA-ACGMV est un organisme offrant des services au niveau national dans le domaine des arts. Notre
objectif est de promouvoir et préserver la musique traditionnelle canadienne sous toutes ses formes. Votre pré-
sence est la preuve de la vitalité, l’enthousiasme et la fierté que ressentent les Canadiens à travers la musique des
violoneux traditionnels.

Welcome to the 2017 Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Competition. The CGMFA is delighted to hold the 28th an-
nual competition in Quebec. Canadian traditional fiddling has significant roots in Quebec. In fact, the Quebec fidd-
ling style from its earliest beginnings has held a place of distinction in Canadian fiddle music and indeed worldwide.
Today, we welcome competitors from across Canada who are here to vie for the title of “Canadian Grand Master”.
On behalf of the board of directors, I offer a sincere thank you to the host committee, the City of Salaberry-de-Val-
leyfield and the Quebec fiddling community who have recognized the value of fiddle music to the social fabric of
Canada and brought this competition to Quebec.
The CGMFA-ACGMV is a national arts service organization with the goal of supporting Canadian traditional fidd-
ling in its many diverse forms. Your presence here is a testament to the vibrancy and excitement that Canadians
experience in our fiddle music.

CRITÈRES DES JUGES
CRITERIA OF THE JUDGES
Voici quelques critères auxquels les juges seront à l’écoute :
Intonation, compétences techniques, caractère dansant, justesse,
émotion et sentiment
VARIÉTÉ DE MÉLODIES (d’un style de violon spécifique ou d’une variété de styles)
L’ACGMV comprend que tous les styles de violon ne se prêtent pas à la danse et si vous jouez un telle pièce,
vous ne serez pas pénalisé. Ceci étant dit, la danse et le violon vont de pair avec la plupart des styles, il est donc
recommandé d’ajouter des pièces pour la danse.
DIRECTIVE SUR L’IMPROVISATION
Les concurrents peuvent faire preuve d’improvisation en préservant le compteur et la structure fondamentale
de la pièce. L’ACGMV ne favorise pas l’improvisation excessive. Si l’improvisation est utilisée, les concurrents
seront jugés sur la mesure dans laquelle l’improvisation est efficace à la lumière des trois piliers du concours.
Here are some criteria that judges will listen to:
Intonation, technical ability, danceability, overall accuracy,
emotion & feeling
VARIETY OF TUNES (from one specific fiddle style or a variety of styles)
The CGMFA understands that not all fiddle styles lend themselves to dancing and if you play such a tune, you
will not be penalized for this. With that being said, dancing and fiddling go hand in hand with most styles, so
adding some danceable tunes is recommended.
GUIDELINE ON IMPROVISATION
Competitors may use improvisation while preserving the meter and fundamental structure
of the piece. The CGMFA does not encourage excessive improvisation. If improvisation is
used, competitors will be judged on the extent to which improvisation iseffectively
employed in light of the three pillars of the Competition.
10RÈGLEMENTS DU CONCOURS
CONTEST RULES
L’Association Canadienne des Grands Maîtres Violoneux considère que la compétition de comprend trois piliers.
Essentiellement, l’objectif des participants est de :
• Mettre l’accent sur le violon traditionnel;
• Représenter les styles de violon canadien;
• Adopter la diversité régionale du violon canadien.
Les styles de violon reconnus incluent : Country, Traditionnel, Cape Breton, Swing, Métis, Bluegrass, Canadien
français, etc. Chacun peut jouer ses pièces contrastantes dans le style de son choix (ex : quatre mélodies tradi-
tionnelles) ou dans n’importe quel style différent (ex : valse traditionnelle, polka irlandaise, gigue style Breton et
Bluegrass show-tune).
Le classique, le jazz, le blues et autres styles de violons non traditionnels ne sont pas acceptables pour ce concours.
LES PRÉLIMINAIRES
• Chaque participant doit jouer une valse (rythme 3/4), une gigue (rythme 6/8), un reel, breakdown
ou hornpipe (rythme 2/4) et une pièce de son choix. Le participant peut jouer ces pièces dans
l’ordre de son choix.
• Chaque participant aura cinq (5) minutes pour compléter ses quatre pièces. Cette limite de temps
sera rigoureusement respectée. Les juges cesseront immédiatement de juger à l’expiration de
cette limite de temps.
• Les onze (11) premiers concurrents seront choisis pour la finale de la compétition et devront être
prêts dès le début de la finale le soir-même. Immédiatement après que les onze (11) premiers
auront été annoncés, les concurrents tireront au sort pour déterminer l’ordre dans lequel ils
joueront sur la scène.
• En cas d’égalité pour la onzième place, les concurrents égaux devront jouer de nouveau.
Le concurrent doit jouer une valse, une gigue et soit un reel, un breakdown ou un hornpipe
(trois pièces). Les pièces jouées pendant la ronde préliminaire peuvent être répétées ou
des pièces différentes peuvent être jouées. Le choix revient au participant. Ces pièces peuvent
être jouées dans n’importe quel ordre.
LA FINALE
• Les finalistes doivent jouer quatre (4) pièces contrastantes. Ils ou elles peuvent jouer des pièces
de leur répertoire préféré, dans leur zone de confort et qui représentent leur compétence, leur
habileté technique et leur musicalité.
• Les concurrents joueront quatre pièces contrastantes, de chacune des catégories suivantes :
• Catégorie 1: Valse (3/4), Air
• Catégorie 2: Marche (6/8), Gigue
• Catégorie 3: Reel (2/4 ou 4/4), Hornpipe, Strathspey, Polka, Clog, Two-Step
• Catégorie 4: Le choix du concurrent - Le concurrent jouera une pièce de son choix,
n’ayant pas été jouée auparavant dans la Catégorie 1, 2 ou 3.
11RÈGLEMENTS DU CONCOURS
CONTEST RULES
The Canadian Grand Masters Fiddling Association considers the competition to have three pillars. In essence, it:
• Emphasizes traditional fiddling;
• Represents Canadian fiddling styles;
• Embraces the regional diversity of Canadian fiddling.
Recognized fiddle styles include: Country, Old Time, Cape Breton, Swing, Métis, Bluegrass, French Canadian Etc.
Contrasting tunes can be played in one style (e.g. four contrasting Old-time tunes) or in any number of a variety of
styles (e.g. Old-time waltz, Irish Polka, Cape Breton jig and Bluegrass show-tune).
Classical, jazz, blues and other non traditional fiddle styles are not acceptable for this contest.
THE PRELIMINARIES
• Each contestant must play a Waltz (3/4 time), Jig (6/8 time), one of a Reel, Breakdown or Hornpipe
(2/4 time) and a Tune of Choice. These tunes can be played in any order in which the contestant
wishes to play them.
• Each contestant will have five (5) minutes to complete the four tunes. This time limit will be
strictly adhered to. Judging will cease immediately upon the expiration of this time limit.
• The top eleven (11) contestants will be chosen for the finals and must be ready at the start of the
Competition Finals that evening. Contestants will draw for playing position on stage immediately
after the top eleven (11) are announced.
• In the event of a tie for eleventh place, the tied contestants will be required to play over again.
The contestant must play a Waltz, Jig and one of a Reel, Breakdown or Hornpipe (three tunes).
The tunes played during the preliminary round may be repeated or different tunes may be
played. The choice is up to the contestant.
THE FINALS
• Finalists must play four (4) contrasting tunes. Finalists may play tunes from their preferred
repertoire and comfort zone which showcases the contestant’s skill, technical ability, and
musicality.
• Competitors will play four contrasting pieces, being one piece from each of the following
three categories:
• Catégorie 1: Valse (3/4), Air
• Catégorie 2: Marche (6/8), Gigue
• Catégorie 3: Reel (2/4 ou 4/4), Hornpipe, Strathspey, Polka, Clog, Two-Step
• Catégorie 4: Le choix du concurrent - Le concurrent jouera une pièce de
son choix, n’ayant pas été jouée auparavant dans la Catégorie 1, 2 ou 3.

MC AND JUDGES
PAUL LEMELIN (ON)
Maître de cérémonie / MC
En 2014, Paul Lemelin a été nommé champion de la compétition des Grands Maîtres Violoneux.
Il est le président de l’organisme Fiddleworks/Violon à l’œuvre à Chelmsford, en Ontario, et l’hôte
du Championnat de violon et danse à claquettes du nord de l’Ontario. Paul a remporté de nom-
breux concours, incluant la classe « Open » à Pembroke, en Ontario.
Paul Lemelin is the 2014 CGM Fiddle Champion. He is the President of the Fiddleworks/Violon à
l’oeuvre organization in Chelmsford, Ontario, and the host of the Northern Ontario Fiddle and
Stepdance Championship. Paul has won numerous fiddle contests including the Open Class at
Pembroke, Ontario.
CALVIN VOLLRATH (AB)
Juge / Judge
Récipiendaire du prix d’excellence de l’Association canadienne des Grands Maîtres Violoneux en
2005, Calvin compte plus de 60 albums à son actif. Il enseigne maintenant le violon un peu par-
tout au Canada et aux États-Unis, notamment au Calvin Vollrath Fiddle Camp.
Calvin Vollrath received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Canadian Grand Masters
Fiddling Association in 2005 and has recorded over 60 albums. He now teaches the art of fiddling
across Canada and the United States, most notably at the Calvin Vollrath Fiddle Camp.
KELLI TROTTIER (ON)
Juge / Judge
Kelli Trottier est chanteuse, violoniste et danseuse à claquettes de renom. Elle a parcouru une
partie du monde comme soliste dans la production Bowfire. Elle joue sur les scènes à travers
l’Amérique du Nord, l’Europe, le Moyen-Orient et le Grand Nord. Kelli demeure très en demande
en tant qu’instructrice et juge de violon au Canada et aux États-Unis. Tout récemment, elle a été
intronisée au Temple de la Renommée de la Musique Country d’Ottawa Valley.
Kelli Trottier is a renowned signer, fiddler and step dancer. She toured much of the world as a
featured soloist in Bowfire for nine years. She is on stages across North America, Europe, the
Middle East, and the Far North. Kelli continues to be a highly sought-after instructor and judge
of fiddle events across Canada and parts of the U.S. Recently, she was inducted into the Ottawa
Valley Country Music Hall of Fame.

Natif de L’Ancienne-Lorette, près de Québec, Jacquelin Guérette a commencé à jouer de la guitare
à l’âge de 13 ans, puis, à 15 ans, il se lance dans le violon. Depuis 1995, il n’a pas manqué une édi-
tion du concours de violon de Fiddle Park, à Pembroke, en Ontario. Jacques était aussi présent au
festival Fiddles of the World en 1999. Il aime écouter et jouer tous les styles de violon. Occasion-
nellement, Jacquelin accompagne Calvin Vollrath lorsqu’il se produit dans l’est du pays.Jacquelin
est juge pour la seconde fois à la CGMVC.
Jacquelin Guénette, born at Ancienne-Lorette, near Quebec City, started to play the guitar at 13
years old and the fiddle at 15. Since 1995, he has not missed a single edition of the Fiddle Park’s
contest in Pembroke, Ontario. He was also a part of the 1999 Fiddles of the World festival. He
loves to listen and play just about any style of fiddle music. On occasions, he is the accompanist
for Calvin Vollrath when he is down East. This is his second time as a judge for the CGMFC.

Melika Lemelin est une musicienne autodidacte qui joue du piano depuis l’âge de 15 ans. Elle
est la mère de quatre beaux enfants. Originaire du Québec, elle demeure à Grand Sudbury, en
Ontario, et elle est l’une des pianistes les plus en demande dans les compétitions de violon et
danse à claquettes.
En 2010 et 2012, Melika a remporté la 3e place dans la catégorie accompagnement au CGMV
de Nashville, Tennessee. Elle a eu l’honneur de jouer avec des musiciens extraordinaires :
Shane Cook, The Brian Pickell Band, Calvin Vollrath, Paul Lemelin, Ray Legere, Don Reed et
plusieurs autres.
Melika Lemelin is a self-taught musician and has been playing piano since the age of 15. She is
a mother of four beautiful children. Originally from the province of Quebec, she lives in Grand
Sudbury, Ontario, and is one of Ontario’s most sought-out house pianists for fiddle and step
dance competitions.
In 2010 and 2012, Melika won 3rd place in the accompaniment category at the GMFC in

TRENT BRUNER (SK)

Trent a débuté en musique à l’âge de 12 ans en prenant des leçons de piano à Canwood, en
Saskatchewan. Il détient un baccalauréat en enseignement élémentaire et en musique de
l’Université de Saskatchewan et une maîtrise en ethnomusicologie de l’Université de Bergen,
Norvège. Trent a enseigné le piano et la guitare dans des ateliers de violon et camps de mu-
sique depuis 1990.
Il accompagne régulièrement en tournée plusieurs des grands violoneux et il est très recher-
ché en tant qu’accompagnateur aux concours de violon à travers le Canada et sur divers
albums. Il est également actif pour des enregistrements, comme professeur de musique, chef
d’orchestre et compositeur.
Trent Bruner began playing the piano at age 12 in Canwood, Saskatchewan. He holds Bache-
lor’s degrees in Elementary Classroom Education and Music from the University of Saska-
tchewan and a Master’s degree in Ethnomusicology from the University of Bergen, in Norway.
Trent has taught piano and guitar in workshops at fiddle and music camps since 1990.
He regularly accompanies many of the top fiddle players on their tours, is sought-after as
accompanist at fiddle contests throughout Canada and does a lot of work as a backup artist
on many albums. Trent is also active as a recording artist, music teacher, choir conductor and
composer.

COLTEN BEAR - EDMONTON (AB)
Âgé de 16 ans, Colten a commencé à jouer du violon dès l’âge de 9 ans. L’an dernier, il a été in-
vité à participer au volet junior au CGMVC à Morinville, en Alberta. Il est honoré de faire partie
du CGMVC une fois de plus cette année à Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, au Québec.
Colten Bear is 16 years old and has been playing the fiddle since the age of 9. He was part of
the Junior Showcase in Morinville, Alberta, last year. He is honoured to be a contestant of the
CGMFC this year in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, Quebec.
JORDAN BÉLANGER - VICTORIAVILLE (QC)
De 2006 à 2015, Jordan a suivi des cours de violon en musique classique. Il a participé à de
nombreux ateliers et camps de violon traditionnel au Québec. Il a été invité au volet junior du
CGMVC à Moncton, au Nouveau-Brunswick. Il a été sélectionné parmi des centaines de candi-
dats au Canada pour faire partie des 24 jeunes musiciens à l’émission Virtuose d’ICI Radio-Ca-
nada.
From 2006 to 2015, Jordan took violin lessons studying classical music. He participated in
many fiddle camps and workshops in Quebec. He was invited to play at the Junior Showcase
at the CGMFC in Moncton, New Brunswick. He was selected among hundreds of candidates
across Canada to be part of the TV show Virtuose on ICI Radio-Canada, along with 24 young
musicians.
KYLE BURGHOUT - OTTAWA (ON)
Kyle s’est produit lors de bon nombre de concours et a été couronné champion nord-amé-
ricain de violon irlandais et champion dans la catégorie duo au Canadian Open de violon. Il
a aussi été finaliste lors de l’All-Ireland Fiddle Competition et à une édition antérieure des
Grands Maîtres Violoneux. Il a joué au Canada, aux États-Unis, en Irlande, Italie, Autriche et
Hongrie. Il est membre du groupe Branches of Silver et agit en tant que directeur artistique et
instructeur au Fiddleheads Musical Theatre.
Kyle participated in his fair share of contests and was crowned North American Irish Fiddle
Champion, Canadian Open Duet Fiddle Champion and was a finalist at the All-Ireland Fiddle
Competition and the Canadian Grand Masters. He has performed in Canada, the United
States, Ireland, Italy, Austria and Hungary. He plays in the band Branches of Silver and acts as
the Artistic Director and Instructor of the Fiddleheads Musical Theatre.
BENJAMIN CHRISTIANI - EDMONTON (AB)
Violoniste depuis l’âge de 4 ans, Benjamin a grandi en écoutant la musique ukrainienne et
traditionnelle. En plus d’avoir fait partie de l’Edmonton Youth Orchestra pendant 6 ans, il a agi
en tant qu’instructeur pour le Wild Rose Old Tyme Fiddlers Association et l’Alberta Society of
Fiddlers. Depuis 2016, il joue au sein du Diamonds Band, qui assure l’ambiance musicale à de
nombreux événements partout en Alberta. Benjamin rejoint la compétition fier d’une récente
1ère position au Grand North American Old Time Fiddle Championship, à Radway, en Alberta.
Fiddler since the age of 4, Benjamin grew up listening to Ukrainian and Old Time music. Along
with being a member of the Edmonton Youth Orchestra for 6 years, he acted as an instructor
for the Wild Rose Old Tyme Fiddlers Association and the Alberta Society of Fiddlers. In 2016,

JANE CORY - WINNIPEG (MB)
Jane Cory, de Winnipeg, au Manitoba, était l’une des musiciennes de la vitrine junior de l’édi-
tion 2010 des Grands Maîtres Violoneux et fait partie de la compétition officielle depuis 2011.
Elle a commencé le violon classique à l’âge de 5 ans et le violon traditionnel à 7 ans. Elle a été
finaliste de nombreux concours de violon partout au pays, a joué dans de nombreux festivals,
concerts et événements musicaux, a collaboré à plusieurs albums en studio et a également
sorti son premier album intitulé Road Between the Saints, en 2014.

YVON CUILLERIER - ST-BRUNO DE MONTARVILLE (QC)
Yvon a commencé le violon à 14 ans et son amour du folklore a débuté vers l’âge de 18 ans.
Encouragé par son père, il a étudié la théorie musicale par correspondance. Agent motivateur
et modèle pour la plupart des musiciens folkloriques, il est virtuose de la musique irlandaise,
populaire, jazz et classique. Déterminé, il a remporté presque toutes les compétitions de
grande importance, dont un premier concours en 1953, à la radio. Il est quatre fois champion
du concours annuel de l’Association des Violoneux du Québec et est plusieurs fois finaliste au
grand concours de Pembroke, en Ontario.
Yvon started playing fiddle at 14 and his passion for folk music began at 18. Encouraged by his
father, he studied musical theory by correspondence. Model and mentor for many of today’s
traditional musicians, he is a virtuoso in Irish, popular, jazz and classical music. He won most
of the important competitions, the first of which in 1953, at a radio station. He is a 4-time
champion of the annual championship of L’Association des Violoneux du Quebec, and is many
times finalist of the fiddle contest in Pembroke, Ontario.
VÉRONIQUE DEMERS - WINNIPEG (MB)
Véronique a commencé le violon à 3 ans, il y a 20 ans, dans le programme Suzuki dans
son village de Winnipeg et s’est mise à la musique traditionnelle à 9 ans. Elle accompagne
les danseurs du groupe l’Ensemble Folklorique de la Rivière-Rouge. Elle a participé à des
festivals internationaux de musique en France, au Mexique, à Milwaukee, à Nashville et en
Indonésie, afin de représenter la culture canadienne-française. Il n’y a rien qu’elle préfère
plus que jouer de la musique. C’est la troisième fois qu’elle participe à la CGMVC et elle est
très heureuse d’être de retour.
Véronique started playing the violin when she was 3 years old, 20 years ago, in the Suzuki
program of her home town of Winnipeg. She began fiddling six years after that. She per-
forms with l’Ensemble Folklorique de la Rivière-Rouge, where she provides live music for the
dancers. She toured France, Mexico, Milwaukee, Nashville and Indonesia to represent the
French-Canadian culture in international festivals. There is nothing she loves more than to
perform. This is her 3rd time competing at the CGMFC and she is very happy to be back.

COURTNEY DREW - COOKSHIRE-EATON (QC)
Courtney participe pour la première fois à la Compétition des Grands Maîtres Violoneux du
Canada. Âgée de 19 ans, elle vient de terminer sa première année d’université en mathé-
matiques et elle fait de la recherche, cet été, à l’Université Bishop. Elle a commencé le violon
classique à l’âge de sept ans, mais s’est rapidement découvert une passion pour le violon tra-
ditionnel. Elle a été invitée à jouer lors de plusieurs spectacles, ainsi que pour la tournée dans
les Maritimes avec le Scott Woods Band.
This is Courtney’s first time competing at the Canadian Grand Masters. Now 19 years old, she
has just completed her first year of university in Mathematics and she is working as a research
assistant at Bishop’s University for the summer. She started classical violin at the age of seven,
but quickly discovered a passion for fiddle music. In 2013, she was honoured to tour the Mari-
times with the Scott Woods Band.
KAI GRONBERG - MISSION (CB-BC)
Kai joue du violon depuis l’âge de 4 ans. Au cours des années, il a appris avec plusieurs grands
musiciens comme Keith Wilson, Sarah Sabir et Mike Sanyshun. Avec sa sœur Lia, il a joué dans
plusieurs festivals partout au Canada, incluant les Jeux olympiques d’hiver de Vancouver en
2010. Il en est à sa quatrième participation à la compétition de CGMVC et, encore une fois, il
est très honoré d’en faire partie.
Kai has been playing the fiddle since he was 4 years old. Throughout the years, he has learned
from many great players like Keith Wilson, Sarah Sabir and Mike Sanyshun. With his sister

LIA GRONBERG - MISSION (CB-BC)

Since a young age, Lia has been playing the fiddle with her brother in a duo called Fiddlin’
Frenzy. They have performed at the 2010 Winter Olympic Games and many other music festi-
vals. They have published three albums as a duo. Lia started teaching fiddle, cello, and piano
at 15 years old. She was crowned champion of different fiddle contests throughout Canada. In
2014, she was part of the junior showcase at the CGMFC, and is pleased to be invited back as a
competitor for the third time.
ETHAN HARTY - STROME (AB)
En 2015, Ethan est introduit lors du volet junior du CGMVC de Moncton comme possédant une
vieille âme. Ethan a commencé le violon en prenant des leçons classiques durant deux ans,
mais son amour pour la musique traditionnelle l’a conduit au camp de Violon de Calvin, où il
a appris ses pièces traditionnelles. À l’âge de 12 ans, Ethan a enregistré son premier album
intitulé Steaming Strings.
In 2015, Ethan was introduced at the CGMFC Moncton Junior Showcase as an old soul. Ethan
learned to play the violin with two years of classical lessons, but his love of old time led him
to Calvin’s Camp, where he learned his first fiddle tunes. At age 12, Ethan recorded his first
album, Steaming Strings.

BRITTANY IWANCIWSKI - VICTORIA (CB-BC)
Brittany a un amour pour les styles de musique folklorique, celtique et traditionnel canadien et
il est profondément enraciné dans ses compositions. Grandissant à Prince George en Colom-
bie-Britannique, elle a débuté le violon à l’âge de 7 ans et, peu de temps après, elle a commencé
à participer à des concours à travers sa province natale. Brittany fait maintenant partie du groupe
musical primé Coastline.
Brittany has a love for Folk, Celtic and Canadian Old Time fiddle styles, which is deeply ingrained in
her music. Growing up in Prince George (BC), she started playing the fiddle at age 7 and was soon
performing and competing in contests across her home province. Now based in Victoria, Brittany
is part of the award-winning group Coastline.
ALANNA JENISH - OSHAWA (ON)
Originaire d’Ottawa, Alanna a commencé la gigue à l’âge de 4 ans et a peu de temps après, a
appris le violon. Maintenant à l’aube de la vingtaine, Alanna a récemment complété un baccalau-
réat en musique à l’Université de Toronto. Alanna a fait des tournées avec le Scott Wood’s Band
et le Great Canadian Fiddle Show, en plus de jouer fréquemment avec deux groupes de bluegrass
locaux.
Originally from Ottawa, Alanna began step-dancing at the age of 4, and soon after, took up the
fiddle. Now in her early twenties, she recently completed a Bachelor of Music at the University of
Toronto. Alanna has toured with groups such as the Scott Wood’s Band and the Great Canadian
Fiddle Show and also regularly plays with two local bluegrass bands.
RAYMOND KNORR - REGINA (SK)
Raymond a commencé les leçons de violon à l’âge de 4 ans avec Everett Larson. Il joue égale-
ment de la basse, de la guitare et du violon alto lors de différents événements dans la région
de Régina. Il étudie présentement en ingénierie à l’Université de Régina. Ray a déjà participé à
la CGMVC et est heureux de représenter la Saskatchewan pour une quatrième fois, à Sala-
berry-de-Valleyfield.
Raymond began taking fiddle lessons from Everett Larson at the age of 4. He also plays bass,
guitar and viola for various events around the Regina area. He is currently into his second year
of Engineering at the University of Regina. Ray will be competing at the CGMFC for the fourth
time and is happy to be representing Saskatchewan again this year in Salaberry-de-Valleyfield.
ALEX KUSTUROK - WINNIPEG (MB)
Alex est un violoneux de 3e génération qui a suivi sa mère, Patti Kusturok, à des danses tradi-
tionnelles à travers le Manitoba pendant la majeure partie de sa vie. Il a été couronné, cham-
pion du Manitoba à 5 reprises, champion de la Colombie-Britannique à 2 reprises et champion
du Grand Nord Américain. Il a participé à la Compétition des Grands Maîtres Violoneux et s’est
classé parmi les dix premiers participants, en plus de jouer dans le volet junior.
Alex is a 3rd generation fiddler who has been following his mother, Patti Kusturok, to
Old time dances all around Manitoba for most of his life. He is a 5-time Mani-
toba champion, a 2-time British Columbia champion and a Grand North
American champion. He participated in the Grand Masters Competition,
ranking in the top ten and performed in the Junior Showcase.

SOPHIE LAVOIE - ST-JUSTIN (QC)
Violoneux, chanteuse et compositrice, Sophie a débuté le piano classique dès son jeune âge.
Elle s’est intéressée tôt à la musique traditionnelle québécoise en écoutant des violoneux de
sa région, le Lac-Saint-Jean. Elle a créé le groupe L’Attisée et a performé avec eux de 2005 à
2008 à travers le Québec et l’Irlande. En 2008, en duo avec le cornemuseur Fiachra O’Regan, ils
ont enregistré trois albums dont un d’eux, Un Canadien errant, a été nommé dans la catégorie
album traditionnel à l’ADISQ en 2016.
Fiddler, singer and composer Sophie started playing music by learning classical piano as a
child. She soon becomes interested in the traditional music of Quebec and began her trad
apprenticeship by listening to fiddlers from her region, the Lac-Saint-Jean. With two other mu-
sicians, she created the band L’Attisée and they performed from 2005 to 2008 all over Quebec
and Ireland. In 2008, she recorded three albums with piper Fiachra O’Regan. One of them, Un
Canadien errant, was nominated for Traditional Album of the Year at the ADISQ gala in 2016.
GERMAIN LEDUC - ST-STANISLAS-DE-KOSTKA (QC)
Violoneux depuis l'âge de 15 ans, Germain Leduc a à son actif huit albums au violon, dont deux
regroupant 40 de ses compositions. Il accompagne entre autres la troupe de danse Manigance
à travers le monde et agit en tant que pianiste pour le violoneux Calvin Vollrath lors de ses
tournées au Québec et en Ontario.
Fiddler since the age of 15, Germain Leduc released eight albums on the violin, two of them
presenting 40 of his own pieces. He accompanies the dance company Manigance around the
world and plays the piano for the musician Calvin Vollrath on his tours of Quebec and Ontario,
among others.
JANELLE MELANSON - MONCTON (NB)
Janelle a commencé à prendre des leçons de violon à l’âge de 4 ans et a joué à plusieurs en-
droits à travers le monde, notamment avec son groupe The Lumber Jills. À l’âge de 12 ans, elle
a enregistré un premier album intitulé « S’envoler/Taking Flight » avec sa sœur Christine. Elle
participe à la Compétition des Grands Maîtres Violoneux depuis 2012.
Janelle started taking fiddle lessons at the age of 4 and has been performing at events all
over the world, most notably with her all-female band, The Lumber Jills. At the age of 12, she
recorded her first album titled “S’envoler/Taking Flight” with her sister Christine. She has been
competing at the Grand Masters since 2012.
DAN MIGHTON - HANOVER (ON)
Dan a commencé le violon au début des années 2000. À 12 ans, il dominait déjà dans plusieurs
compétitions à travers l’Ontario. Monté à la classe 18 ans et moins, il a remporté plusieurs
compétitions avant l’âge de 15 ans. À 17 ans, il se met au défi dans la classe « Open » et réalise
son rêve de décrocher la première place. En 2009, à Shelburne, Dan a remporté le prix dans
la catégorie Meilleure pièce canadienne de ton choix, avec sa propre composition Stageman
Stacey’s Polka.
Dan started playing in the early 2000s. By the age of 12, he had placed among the top in
several fiddle competitions throughout Ontario. Moving up to the 18 & under category, Dan
finished first at many different competitions by the time he turned 15. At 17, he decided to
challenge himself in the Open Class, and realized his dream of winning the top title. In 2009, at
Shelburne, Dan won the award for the Great Canadian Tune of Choice with Stageman Stacey’s
Polka, his own composition.

CÉLINE MURRAY - DORCHESTER (ON)
Âgée de 19 ans, Céline étudie la musique classique depuis l’âge de 4 ans. Elle est présente-
ment inscrite au programme de techniques de violon à l’école de musique Schulich de l’Uni-
versité McGill de Montréal. Une artiste aux styles diversifiés, Céline a élargi ses horizons artis-
tiques pour inclure à son répertoire la musique d’orchestre, le violon traditionnel, la musique
d’église et de théâtre. En 2016, elle a obtenu la 2e place au concours de musique traditionnelle
de Shelburne, en Ontario.
19-year-old Céline has been studying classical music since the age of 4. She is currently en-
rolled in the Violin Performance program at the Schulich School of Music at McGill University,
in Montreal. A diverse artist, Céline is broadening her artistry to include orchestral, fiddle,
sacred and musical theatre in her performance repertoire. In 2016, she was awarded 2nd place
at the Canadian Open Old Time Fiddle Championship in Shelburne, Ontario.
CHLOE NAKAHARA - PRINCE GEORGE (CB-BC)
Chloé a commencé le violon à l’âge de 6 ans dans sa ville natale de Prince George. Tout en
grandissant, elle a développé son oreille pour la musique canadienne traditionnelle et a
parcouru la Colombie-Britannique pour participer à des compétitions de violon. Son amour
du violon l’a menée vers différents styles, tel la musique celtique et bluegrass. Chloé étudie
maintenant au Conservatoire de musique de Victoria avec Daniel Lapp, qui lui a fait connaître
le jazz et l’improvisation. En dehors de l’école, elle fait partie du groupe Coastline.
Chloe began playing the fiddle at the age of 6 in her hometown of Prince George. Growing up,

school, she is part of the award-winning fiddle group Coastline.
DANNY PERREAULT - GRANBY (QC)
Danny a remporté plusieurs compétitions canadiennes et a participé à la Compétition des
Grands Maîtres plus d’une dizaine de fois. Au cours des années, il a raffiné sa technique avec
son idole Yvon Cuillerier. Le respect des traditions est important pour Danny, qui a compo-
sé une centaine de mélodies et qui se dit inspiré par Gérard « Ti-Noir » Joyal, Don Messer et
plusieurs autres.
Danny has won many competitions across the country and has participated at the Grand Mas-
ters more than a dozen times. He refined his technique over the years, thanks to his idol, Yvon
Cuillerier. Traditions are important for Danny, who wrote over 100 melodies and cites Gerard
“Ti-Noir” Joyal, Don Messer and many more as his inspiration.
MARTHA PITRE - SHÉDIAC (NB)
À seulement 17 ans, Martha Pitre se joint à la CGMVC pour la 4e fois. Elle a commencé à jouer du
violon à l’âge de 3 ans et a depuis décroché la première position de sa catégorie d’âge cinq années
consécutives au Maritime Fiddle Festival d’Halifax. Pour ce qui est de la Compétition des Grands
Maîtres Violoneux, elle a atteint les finales 2 fois en 3 présences. Martha a participé à une tournée
en Écosse et en Belgique plus tôt cet été et est membre des Sussex Avenue Fiddlers avec Ivan et
Vivian Hicks.
At only 17 years old, Martha Pitre will be part of the CGMFC for the 4th time. She began
playing the fiddle at age 3 and has since won in her age category at the Mari-
time Fiddle Festival in Halifax for five consecutive years. As for the Grand
Masters, she qualified for the finals 2 years out of the 3 she competed
in. Martha toured in Scotland and Belgium earlier this summer and is
a member of the Sussex Avenue Fiddlers with Ivan and Vivian Hicks.

Originaire de Whitehorse au Yukon, Kieran Poile a été élevé avec la musique traditionnelle et
bluegrass canadienne. Il a joué lors de nombreux événements avec le groupe Ryan McNally,
et s’est produit pour la Duchesse et le Duc de Cambridge. Il a également joué du violon avec
divers groupes, tels que Notre Dame de Grass, Li’l Andy et la légende Paul Daraîche. Il est très
heureux d’être de retour à la compétition CGMVC pour une 4e fois.
Hailing from Whitehorse in the Yukon Territory, Kieran Poile has been brought up in the Cana-
dian, bluegrass and old time fiddle tradition. He has played at numerous festivals and events
with the Ryan McNally Band and performed for the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge. He has
also played fiddle with groups such as Notre Dame de Grass, Li’l Andy and Paul Daraîche. He is
very happy to be back competing for the fourth time at the CGMFC.
AYNSLEY PORCHAK - WOODSTOCK (ON)
Aynsley est une étudiante diplômée de l’Université de l’Est du Tennessee où elle poursuit une
maîtrise en études Appalaches, avec deux majeures, en anglais et en musique. Elle a participé
au volet junior de la CGMVC en 2012. Elle a fait partie de la tournée Swingin’ Fiddles du Scott
Woods Band. Aynsley a remporté la CGMV à Nashville, au Tennessee, en 2015, où elle a été
juge l’année suivante. Elle a également été une participante et juge au concours national de
Weiser, en Idaho.
Aynsley is a graduate student at East Tennessee State University currently working on her
Masters in Appalachian Studies. She is double majoring in English and Music. She was part of
the CGMFC Junior Showcase in 2012. She toured with the Scott Woods Band on their Swin-
gin’ Fiddles tour. Aynsley won the 2015 GMFC in Nashville, Tennessee, where she judged the
following year. She has also competed and judged in the National Oldtime Fiddler’s Contest in
Weiser, Idaho.
BRAD REID - DARTMOUTH (NE)
Brad, un multi-instrumentaliste, joue de la musique celtique au violon, en plus du jazz et du
classique au saxophone et autres instruments à vent. Avec son groupe Jigs Start Here, il met
en valeur les compositeurs des provinces de l’Atlantique, influencé par Buddy MacMaster,
Jerry Holland, John Hartford, et plusieurs autres. Dans le Baroque N’ String Quartet, ses arran-
gements originaux ont été enregistrés sur un album intitulé Buttermilk Mary et joué devant
différents publics.
Brad is a multi-instrumentalist who performs Celtic fiddle styles on the violin, as well as
jazz and classical music on saxophone and other instruments of the woodwind family. With
his group Jigs Start Here, he highlights fiddle composers from Atlantic Canada, drawing on
influences of Buddy MacMaster, Jerry Holland, John Hartford, and others. In the Baroque
N’Fiddle String Quartet, his original arrangements have been recorded on an album entitled
Buttermilk Mary and performed for many audiences.
SIMON REIMER - LORETTE (MB)
Simon joue du violon depuis 18 ans, mais est violoneux depuis 10 ans. Il est présentement
membre de plusieurs groupes en tant que violoneux. Il a donc été appelé à jouer à travers
le monde, incluant au Chili et en Indonésie. Le moment le plus mémorable de sa carrière de
musicien fut d’être invité à participer pour une première fois au CGMVC de Moncton, en 2015.
Simon est enchanté de faire une fois de plus partie de ce prestigieux concours.
Simon has been fiddling for 10 years and playing the violin for nearly 18 years. He is currently
a member of several different bands and fiddling has taken him all over the world, including
Chile and Indonesia. His biggest moment as a musician was being asked to compete in his first
CGMFC in Moncton, in 2015. Simon is thrilled to be part of this prestigious contest once again.
