Yves Saint Laurent "Le plus beau vêtement qui puisse habiller une femme ce sont les bras de l'homme qu'elle aime. Mais, pour celles qui n'ont pas eu la chance de trouver ce bonheur, je suis là." (1983) On 29th January 1962, Yves Saint Laurent ‘s first fashion show took place in Paris. To celebrate this, six Parisian museums offer a one-time original exhibition until 15th May. Saint Laurent was born on 1 August 1936, in Oran, French Algeria. During his young years, he was passionate about fashion. In 1953, he came to Paris to receive the first prize in a contest for young fashion designers organized by the International Wool Secretariat. He met with Michel de Brunhoff who would later introduce him to Christian Dior in 1955. The famous designer recognised his talent immediately and hired him on the spot. Yves Saint Laurent was only aged 21 when Dior died, leaving him the head designer of the House of Dior. For his first collection with Dior, Yves Saint Laurent created a fluid silhouette under which the body disappeared: the Trapeze line was born. In 1962, Yves Saint Laurent and his partner industrialist Pierre Bergé started their own fashion house, Yves Saint Laurent YSL. The designer brought in many changes to the fashion industry. He was the first French couturier to come out with a full ready-to-wear (prêt-à-porter) line and opened his Pret-à-Porter House YSL Rive Gauche in 1967. Success was instant, and many boutiques opened in France, but also in New-York and London. Yves Saint Laurent collaborated with many artists and created costumes for theatre, opera, cinema and ballet. He found inspiration in Picasso or Matisse artwork, and designed Mondiran dresses in 1965. Among his female clientele, Saint Laurent had numerous muses that inspired his work: french models Victoire Doutreleau, and Laetitia Casta, famous actresses Catherine Deneuve and Talitha Getty, American socialite Nan Kempner... In 1983, Saint Laurent became the first living fashion designer to be honoured by the Metropolitan Museum of Art with a solo exhibition. In 2007, he was awarded the rank of Grand officier de la Légion d'honneur by French President Nicolas Sarkozy. Saint Laurent died on 1 June 2008 of brain cancer at his residence in Paris. If you want to learn more about Yves Saint Laurent, you can visit the excellent website of the YSL Musuem: https://museeyslparis.com/en/biography Based on Yves Saint Laurent's life from 1958, Jalil Lespert directed in 2014 the drama film Yves Saint Laurent, starring Pierre Niney (cesar award for best actor), Guillaume Gallienne, Charlotte Le Bon, Laura Smet, Marie de Villepin, Xavier Lafitte, and Nikolai Kinski.
