BEYA GILLE GACHA Beya Gille Gacha est née le 8 décembre 1990 à Paris, d’une mère camerounaise et d’un père français. A l’adolescence, elle choisit d’entrer dans un lycée d’Art Appliqué où elle découvre les arts plastiques, et participe à sa première exposition collective à Stockholm en 2009, intitulée AFRIKANSKA PENSLAR. Tout en continuant à créer, sa passion pour l’histoire de l’art la décide à suivre les cours de l’Ecole du Louvre. Dans l’impossibilité de jongler entre études théoriques et créations plastiques, elle quitte l’EDL au bout de deux ans et monte en 2013 une association pensée comme un collectif d’artistes : NÉFE. Suite à un voyage au Cameroun en 2009, sur sa terre maternelle : le Grassland, elle s’inspire des masques passeports pour réaliser ses œuvres, sculptures et installations, abordant toujours des thèmes sociaux et sociétaux. C’est également lors de ce voyage et de la découverte des ateliers de perlage de l’ONG fondée par sa tante, qu’elle commence une recherche axée sur la production de sculptures perlées. Elle voyage ainsi de nombreuses fois au Cameroun entre 2010 et 2016, notamment pour des missions de bénévolat, où elle dispense des cours d’arts plastiques aux enfants tout en aidant à la gestion de l’organisation. Parallèlement, elle continue d’organiser des expositions en France, et présente pour la première fois ses sculptures perlées fin 2016. Le perlage, elle le travaille d’une manière contemporaine et personnelle, en s’appropriant et mêlant des codes des classicismes africains et occidentaux. Utiliser les perles comme épiderme de ses sculptures est un discours : dans la tradition bamileke, perler un meuble ou une œuvre c’est montrer sa richesse, sa valeur, tout comme le couvrir d’or ou d’ivoire ; dans sa démarche, elle perle des individus pour révéler leur richesse en tant qu’être humain, défendre le fait que chaque être humain ait une valeur. Elle lie chacune de ses œuvres à des textes, des œuvres numériques et audio-visuelles, et propose ainsi des installations variables et évolutives qui illustrent son questionnement de manière plus complexe.
BEYA GILLE GACHA Beya Gille Gacha was born on the 8th December 1990 in Paris, from a Cameroonian mother and French father. As an adolescent, she chose to go to a school of Applied Art where she discovered plastic arts. She participated to her first exhibition called AFRIKANSKA PENSLAR in Stockholm in 2009. While still creating, she decided to follow her passion for art history and studied at the Ecole du Louvre (EDL). Unable to find a balance between theoretical studies and plastic creations, she left the EDL after 2 years and created in 2013 an association thought as an artistic collective : NÉFE. Following a trip to Cameroon in 2009, to her motherland : the Grassland, she drew her inspiration from passeports masks to create her artworks, sculptures and installations, always addressing social and societal themes. It is also during this trip that she discovered beading workshops in the NGO her aunt founded and that she started research focused on the production of beaded scultpures. She travelled several times to Cameroon between 2010 and 2016, for volunteering missions especially, where she gave plastic art classes to children and helped to the management of the NGO. At the same time, she also organized exhibitions in France and presented her beaded sculptures for the first time in late 2016. She re-interprets beading in a contemporary and personal way, mixing rules of African and Occidental classicisms. Using beads as the skin of her sculptures is a statement : in the Bamileke tradition, beading furniture or an artwork is a way to show material wealth and value, just like covering it in gold or ivory ; in her process, she beads individuals to reveal their wealth as human being, defend the fact that each human being has a value. She accompanies each of her artworks with texts, and digital and audiovisual artworks. Hence she proposes variable and progressive installations which illustrate her questioning in a more complex way.
