Simpson, MD, FRCPC, FACC, FHRS, FCAHS @AMC_Sante Canadian Medical Association President 2014–2015 @CMA_Docs Président de l’Association médicale canadienne 2014–2015 Chris Simpson was raised in Nackawic, a small pulp mill town of 1,000 people in western New Brunswick. Torn between pursuing a career in music or medicine, he obtained a BSc at the University of New Brunswick while playing saxophone with The Thomists, a 20-piece big swing band. Chris He went on to medical school at Dalhousie University and obtained his MD in 1992. He Simpson subsequently completed internal medicine and cardiology training at Queen’s University and then a Heart and Stroke Foundation Clinical and Research Fellowship in Cardiac Electrophysiology at the University of Western Ontario. Currently, Dr. Simpson is professor of medicine and chief of cardiology at Queen’s University, as well as medical director of the Cardiac Program at Kingston General Hospital/Hotel Dieu Hospital. In 2015, Dr. Simpson was elected to fellowship in the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences. Dr. Simpson’s primary non-clinical professional interest is health policy. He serves as the chair of the Wait Time Alliance (WTA) and is the lead for the Southeast (Ontario) Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) Cardiovascular Roadmap Project. He subsequently trained as the Senior Registrar at the Royal Brompton Hospital under Professor Yacoub and Mr. Lincoln. In 1995 he was appointed consultant cardiac surgeon at the John Radcliffe hospital in Oxford where he obtained a PhD (from Strathclyde) for studies of the inflammatory response during cardiac surgery. He was President of the Society for Cardiothoracic Surgery of GB and Ireland (April 2010 — April 2012), Chairman of the European Society of Cardiology Cardiovascular Surgery Working Group, a member of the Adult Domain of the European Association for Cardiothoracic Surgery and a member of the AATS and STS. He was recently appointed as the lead for cardiothoracic Surgery in the UK by the Royal college of Surgeons of England. CSCS Postgraduate CIHR/ICRH Distinguished Course October 25 Lecture in Cardiovascular Sciences 07:30 —11:00 October 26 | 14:00 — 15:30 Curbing Atherosclerosis Dr. Jean-Claude Tardif is the Director of the Montreal Heart Institute Research Centre, the chair in Atherosclerosis at Université de Montréal, Canada research chair in Translational and Personalized Medicine, and a full professor of medicine at Université de Montréal. He received his degree in medicine from Université de Montréal in 1987, completed his residency in cardiology in 1992, and did a research fellowship at the New England Medical Center at Tufts University in 1994. He has published over 700 articles and research abstracts in major scientific journals, such as: The New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of the American Medical Association, The Lancet, Circulation, the Journal of the American College of Cardiology, Nature Genetics, the British Journal Jean-Claude of Pharmacology, and Cardiovascular Research. He has written over 30 book chapters (including a Tardif chapter in Braunwald’s Heart Disease). To date, he has delivered over 400 lectures around the world. His research activities cover the molecular, genomic and clinical aspects of atherosclerosis and related diseases and have involved key contributions to preclinical studies and major international randomized clinical trials. He created the Montreal Heart Institute Coordinating Center, which has an international reputation. Dr. Tardif an his team also created the Beaulieu-Saucier Pharmacogenomics Centre and the Centre of Excellence in Personalized Medicine, which receives ongoing support from multiple pharmaceutical and biotech companies. He is also one of the three founders of an international partnership on biomarkers called Critical Markers of Disease, an organization that focuses on the development and enhanced use of biomarkers while facilitating international networking in this important field. Dr. Tardif’s scientific contributions earned him the title of Fellow of the Canadian Academy of Health Sciences along with the Prix du Québec, the province’s highest scientific honour.
