Redaktion is a grotesque typeface family designed
in the course of the post-diploma programme
XCondensed Light
EsadType at the École supérieure d’art et de design
d’Amiens, France.
XCondensed Regular
The name chosen refers to one of the envisioned
use environments: news magazines. It is German for
XCondensed Medium
editorial office or department as well as for editorial
staff. Though developed in the context of news
XCondensed Bold
publishing, the range of possible applications is not
limited to editorial design.
XCondensed XBold
The family comprises of two members:
Redaktion Text is a sober sans serif not distracting
XCondensed Black
from the content, with a concise setup from Light
to Bold for body copy. It is intended for informative Condensed XLight
or selective reading, i. e. short texts and skimming
for interesting snippets, as well as for immersive Condensed Light
reading, i. e. linear, concentrated reading from
beginning to end. Condensed Regular
Redaktion Display is a response to the needs of
complex layouts, offering a variety of widths and Condensed Medium
Condensed Bold
weights. Headings from deck to display sizes require
activating typography. It aims at stimulating to
Condensed XBold
read, grab attention while informing about a subject
matter, compete with or assist large images. The
Display weights perform well in those settings.
A striking detail are forcedly closed apertures in the
darkest weights XBold and Black (as in ‘a’ and ‘e’).
Condensed Black
They are expressive but appropriate even when
they have to deliver bad news.

Especially Redaktion Display draws inspiration from
two historic references by the German typefoundry

and back cover), which becomes obvious in the
