CONCERT DONATIONS
All online performances will be free to attend and are programmed for all ages.
Performing artists are receiving honorariums. In addition, viewer donations will be
accepted across all showcases with 100% of donations to be divided evenly between
all performing artists. These additional donations are crucial for helping the artists
continue their work during times when many income opportunities for performers
have been curtailed. We ask viewers to consider donating via PayPal, even a small
amount will help support the performers during these trying times.
CONTRIBUTION VOLONTAIRE
Toutes les présentations et prestations en ligne sont gratuites et offertes à un public
de tous âges. En plus de la rémunération offerte aux artistes, le public est invité à

Benoit Bourque – Host / maitre de cérémonie
Musician, dancer, singer and caller,
Benoit Bourque has been winning
over the public for more than thirty-
five years on stage with his exuberant
personality. Benoit is also a specialist
in Québécois traditional dancing,
presenting lectures and workshops on
the art at camps and festivals. A skilled
step dancer and bones player, he is
a founding member of Le Carrefour
Mondial de l’Accordéon in Québec.
Benoit has thirty years of experience as a concert emcee, and is currently a member
of the celebrated ensemble La Bottine Souriante. benoitbourque.com
Artiste reconnu pour son énergie et sa joie de vivre contagieuses, Benoit Bourque fait
la conquête du public depuis plus de trente ans. Spécialiste de la danse traditionnelle
québécoise, Benoit présente des ateliers-conférences sur le folklore québécois et
enseigne dans de nombreux camps et festivals, mettant en valeur sa maitrise de la
gigue et des osselets. Membre fondateur du Carrefour mondial de l’accordéon de
Montmagny, Benoit y est présentateur depuis près de trente ans. Depuis 2008, il est
membre du réputé groupe La Bottine Souriante.
Jean Hewson - Host / maitresse de cérémonie
Singer/guitarist Jean Hewson has been collecting
and performing the traditional songs and tunes of
Newfoundland and Labrador for more than thirty
years. Highly regarded as a traditional singer,
arranger and accompanist, Jean was nominated
for Traditional Singer of the Year at the Canadian
Folk Music Awards; and in 2010 she and Christina
Smith received the Tradition Bearer Award from
the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival in recognition
of their outstanding work in preserving the song
and instrumental traditions of Newfoundland and
Labrador.

Depuis plus de trente ans, la chanteuse et guitariste Jean Hewson fait du collectage
et interprète des chansons et des airs traditionnels de Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador. Très
estimée comme chanteuse traditionnelle, arrangeuse et accompagnatrice, Jean
a été finaliste dans la catégorie chanteur.euse traditionnel de l’année aux Prix de
musique folk canadienne. En 2010, Jean et sa collègue Christina Smith ont reçu le
prix de porteuses de tradition du Goderich Celtic Roots Festival en reconnaissance
de leur contribution exceptionnelle à la préservation des traditions chantées et

Prix du travailleur de l’ombre

The Unsung Hero Award celebrates those who make extraordinary contributions to
the folk music scene in Canada, but who remain largely behind-the-scenes. Who
is eligible for this award? You know them: the volunteer who has worked hard
organizing folk festivals, concert series, workshops and other folk venues; the paid
industry professional who has toiled long hours for artists and events above and
beyond the call of duty; the musician who has kept a local style going and who has
shown up to play the dance in their community for the past forty years. Our unsung
heroes are the mainstay of our events and communities. The folk music world could
not function without them.
What all unsung heroes have in common is their unswerving dedication, their passion
for the music, and their persistent efforts. They generously impart their time and
talents to our community, in spite of the fact that the kudos and applause often go to
those that they help take the stage.
This is our opportunity to flash the spotlight in their direction.

Although only one recipient can receive the award this year, we would like to thank
all those who took the time and effort to nominate their Unsung Hero. We sincerely
hope that instituting this category will increase the profile of those who work in the
trenches of the folk music industry, so that they, and others like them, can enjoy our
public thanks and appreciation.
Le prix du Travailleur de l’ombre souligne la contribution extraordinaire à la scène folk
canadienne de ceux et celles qui travaillent dans l’ombre, en dehors des projecteurs.
Qui est éligible ? Vous les connaissez : le bénévole qui se dévoue corps et âme pour
l’organisation d’un festival, d’une série de concerts, d’ateliers, etc. ; le professionnel
rémunéré qui a peiné de longues heures, bien au-delà de ses tâches, pour les artistes
et l’organisation d’évènements ; le musicien qui, depuis quarante ans, a préservé un
style local et joué pour les veillées de danse de son coin de pays. Ces merveilleuses

personnes sont les piliers de nos évènements et de nos communautés. Le monde de
la musique folk ne pourrait pas fonctionner sans eux.
Tous les travailleurs de l’ombre ont en commun leur dévouement indéfectible, leur
passion de la musique et leurs efforts constants. Ils donnent généreusement de
leur temps et de leur talent pour la communauté folk, bien que les félicitations et
les applaudissements vont à ceux qu’ils aident. Ce prix est l’occasion de diriger le
projecteur dans leur direction.

Music 2020: Ava Kobrinsky
Ava Kobrinsky is a passionate supporter of the arts who has devoted her career
to establishing strong organizations that continue to sustain the Canadian folk
community. She was one of the original founders of the Winnipeg Folk Festival
along with her husband Mitch Podolak, and Colin Gorrie, and she went on to help
establish the West End
Cultural Centre and
the ground-breaking
concert tour model
Home Routes/Chemin
Chez Nous.
She excels at building
relationships with
community partners
and funders and
she works tirelessly
behind the scenes to
develop and make
projects happen. Her
energy and skills also
aided the operations

of organizations in other artistic disciplines,
from theatre to dance to opera to film. Ava is a
nurturing and visionary arts administrator who
brings expertise and dedication to every project
in which she participates. She truly represents
the spirit of the Unsung Hero Awards.

l’opéra ou en cinéma. Administratrice des arts visionnaire et stimulante, Ava apporte
son expertise et son engagement dans chaque projet auquel elle participe. À n’en
pas douter, Ava Kobrinsky incarne parfaitement l’esprit du prix de la Travailleuse de
l’ombre.
John Kepkiewicz of / de Thorn Glass
John Kepkiewicz created the beautiful awards that will be given out this evening to
the recipients.
John creates vessels that are generous and stately
using traditional hot glass blown techniques in
his studio, Thorn Glass in Hawksville, Ontario. He
thrives on the intense focus needed to control the
classic, symmetrical bowls, vases, plates, goblets and
paperweights. His interest in form provides him with
many challenges in manipulating the molten glass.
John Kepkiewicz a créé les magnifiques prix qui
seront décernés ce soir. Dans son studio Thorn Glass
à Hawksville (Ontario), John utilise des techniques
traditionnelles de soufflage de verre pour fabriquer
de riches et nobles pièces. Il affectionne beaucoup
la concentration indispensable à la réussite de bols
classiques, vases, assiettes, gobelets et presse-papiers. Sa fascination des formes
lui insuffle l’inspiration nécessaire à la production de pièces à base de verre fondu.

22Showcases / Vitrines “From Far & Wide 1” / “D’ici et d’ailleurs 1” Date: Wednesday, April 7th / Mercredi 7 avril Time / Heure: 8:00 p.m. – 9:15 p.m. ET / 20h-21h15 (HAE) Hosts / Présentateurs: Vic Close & April O’Donoughue The Gilberts The Gilberts are a sibling contemporary folk trio bringing vibrant three-part harmonies, soulful lyricism and melodious alchemy to their original songs with diverse influences including folk music from the 1960s to the current scene, choral, musical theatre, and singer-songwriters. They have performed at festivals around Nova Scotia. Deux frères et une soeur forment ce trio folk contemporain qui nous offre de riches harmonies à trois voix, un lyrisme éloquent et une mélodieuse alchimie. Ils s’inspirent de diverses influences pour créer leurs compositions originales, autant la musique folk des années ’60 que la scène contemporaine, le chant choral, le théatre musical et les auteurs-compositeurs. It was important to Charlie to explore the music of these countries and find songs to lull children to sleep not only in English but in the traditional languages of these countries. Charlie partnered with producer Dean Jones, together they bring these melodies alive with rich instrumentals, layered vocals, and wistful sound.
