Keynote Speaker CHRIS HADFIELD Col. Chris Hadfield has spent a lifetime living up to that responsibility. On July 20, 1969, when he quietly began his mission towards becoming an astronaut, the gap between being a young boy on an Ontario corn farm and the first Canadian to walk in space was unbridgeable. Canada had no astronaut program, nor would it for the foreseeable future. Chris stuck to it. He spent his time at home learning mechanics on the tractors and old cars, flying with his father and brothers every chance he could. Enrolling in air cadets, he worked his way up through the RCAF, becoming an experimental test pilot and flying over 70 types of aircraft. He made certain that when the opportunity arose, he would be prepared for it. In 1995, Chris Hadfield rode his first rocket. Keynote Speaker MANUEL PIZARRO Manuel Pizarro is familiar with challenges and the qualities needed to overcome them. As the first Canadian to reach the summit of Everest alone, without a Sherpa, on May 16, 2007, his will and determination to achieve a larger-than-life goal inspires those who were lucky enough to meet him. His testimony also explains how it is possible to overcome the obstacles that we believe to be insurmountable. Manuel Pizarro was abandoned by his Sherpa at 8,300 meters above sea level. Alone, without food, equipment or oxygen for some time, he became one of the few mountaineers to survive more than 24 hours under extreme conditions on Mount Everest. His extraordinary story inspires thousands of people around the world. Date: Vendredi November 9, 2018 Time: 11 h 00 Location: C omplexe Desjardins La Grande-Place (This workshop will be given in French) 6 QPAT Convention • Congrès APEQ
Each workshop provides arts specialists and generalists alike with creative classroom practices and approaches applicable to developing arts competencies, as well as making clear and tangible connections to other parts of the curriculum. ALL DAY EVENTS Art making for students and teachers Join artist and consultant Frank Caracciolo for a day of collective art-making. Participants will collaborate on a group piece, and learn about the richness of co-creation and gaining inspiration from each other. Open Creative Space Come explore, make, tinker and meet like-minded people at the Open Creative Space co-hosted by LEARN. A Makerspace that embraces the A in STEAM! 9 h 00 – 10 h 15 | EDUCART Thibault Zimmer, Musée des Beaux Arts de Montréal EDUCART can motivate teachers to create and publish their own multi/interdisciplinary LES. The model is based on 3 axes: Subject, theme, and a work of art, and comes with lesson plans and projects in different subject areas. Each work is created with the QEP as a guideline and special consideration is aimed toward the application of knowledge competencies, cross-curricular competencies and broad area of learning – educart.ca/en/ 10 h 30 – 11 h 45 | The 30 Days of Art Challenge MAD2 Members – ATELIER BILINGUE Participating in the Arts is a means to experience the world, to think deeply and to be fully human. engaged in the arts every day. During the challenge, students do an art activity per day for 30 days and record their participation on the log sheet provided. Participants will come away with a full colour classroom poster and a student log sheet master. More materials are also available online at www.learnquebec.ca/30daysart 12 h 15 – 13 h 30 | I ntegrating Character Masks (Commedia Dell‘Arte) in Drama Class Nicolas Doyon Why do student actors generally find it inhibiting to create, interpret and sustain believable characters? Is it because we put all the emphasis on making sure they recite their lines “properly”? Character masks - found in the world of Commedia Dell‘Arte – allow students to explore the physical dimensions of character building before they are introduced to the actual text. In addition, they offer physical models on how to interpret each specific character effectively while considering motive and social status. 13 h 45 – 15 h 00 | Appreciation Across the Arts MAD2 Members Appreciating works of art, across all arts, is a way to access greater awareness about the world, deeper connection with emotions and an understanding of the self. This workshop aims to demystify the Appreciation competency at both elementary and high school levels. Participants will explore various appreciation resources and approaches and will discuss ways of engaging students in an ongoing and deepening appreciation process. Friday, November 9th, 2018 Room: Inspiration (Level 6) Creative Makerspace by LEARN 9 h 00 – 15 h 00 Curious about Makerspaces, ArtHives, Genius Hours and Passion Projects? Thursday / Jeudi 17 h 00 – 18 h 00 A 03 Room: SYMPHONIE 3A (Level 5) Strategies Supporting Academic Success in Students With Mental Health Issues Speaker: Eva Dechef-Tweddle (Teacher) Target Audience: All Category: Wellness The last decade has brought significant classroom changes. Varied learning styles, the incidence of mental health vulnerabilities, and their impact on learning, have added intricacy to teaching. As an educator working with students who exhibit enmeshed educational/ emotional portraits, general instructive tactics often fall short of obtaining “success for all” in reading proficiency and academic success. Educators will be offered strategies to “peel away” student “layers” and endorse academic success. A rise in reading disabilities and comorbid mental health issues in students, invites a need for diverse strategies to engage and motivate students who demonstrate anxiety, depression, helplessness, or negative behavioural displays, when faced with learning difficulties. Merging research findings, field work, and accepting societal changes, can allow us to make positive reforms to education. A 04 Room: SYMPHONIE 3B (Level 5) Unsettling History Speaker: Samantha Morley (Teacher, Graduate Student) Target Audience: Elementary, Secondary, Adult Ed. Category: Social Science Reconciliation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous peoples is one of the biggest challenges facing Canada. This workshop will delve into the darker side of Canada‘s history towards Indigenous nations, beyond residential schools as well as discussing contemporary issues facing Indigenous communities. Resources for Indigenous knowledge will be shared. Helpful for educators to teach history in a more respectful way towards the First Nations and for those wanting to be an ally. A 05 Room: SYMPHONIE 4AB (Level 5) Pressure to be Perfect Speaker: Corrie Sirota Target Audience: All Category: Behaviour Management Today‘s girls are growing up in a world filled with the pressures to perform to perfection. This workshop is designed to help school personnel understand the challenges youth face as they aspire to be the ideal student, best friend, and/or athlete. This workshop will also focus on identifying what normal stress reactions look like, how to identify the signs of anxiety, and why campers tend to have “all or nothing” thinking. Strategies on how to help youth find balance in order to reduce these pressures will also be addressed in this presentation. QPAT Convention • Congrès APEQ 13
