Jean Adodo, a middle-aged Togolese returning to Africa from Switzerland, where he has lived for some thirty
years, asks the young Maxwell Sitti to seduce a certain Minna in return for a hefty compensation. A real estate
agent, Maxwell is struggling to make a living in Lomé, the debauched, scheming capital city. And yet, he’s ready to
turn down this ludicrous proposition. But when he meets the beautiful Minna at the dry-cleaner’s where she works,
he falls head over heels for her. Maxwell finds out, little by little, that Jean and Minna hardly seem to know each
other… So what does Jean Adodo’s proposal mean, and why is it so generously paid? What is the hidden agenda
behind this perilous deed? And, by the way, who is Jean Adodo? A very strange assignment indeed. A celebration
of love and friendship with a gung-ho.
Théo Ananissoh is from Togo and lives in Germany. Perdre le corps is his fifth novel published in the Continents
Noirs collection.

Aussi riche que le roi / As Rich as the King
1er roman - Blanche - 208 pages - janvier 2021
1994, Casablanca. Sarah n’a rien.
____________________________________________________________________________________________
1994, Casablanca. Sarah has nothing. She lives with her mother on the edge of a slum, yet she attends the Lycée
français, alongside the Moroccan elite and the expats. She’s only sixteen, but she’s already learnt how to sell
herself to get what she wants. Thanks to her friend Yaya, dealer to the rich, she meets Driss, who has everything.
She decides to seduce him. Or better yet, to marry him. But Driss is not like the other boys. Driss doesn’t look at
her. Her path towards him is a journey through Casablanca and all its tensions: the wealthy taking up all available
space, parties spent smoking joints beside their swimming pools, prostitutes aborting in back rooms, the murmurs
of insincere outrage, the harassing of powerless maids, and the overriding longing to go elsewhere. But elsewhere
is far, far away.
Abigail Assor was born in Casablanca in 1990.

____________________________________________________________________________________________
À la machine tells the story of the singular fate of Barthélemy Thimonnier, a tailor and inventor of the sewing
machine, whose life and posterity were overshadowed by the commercial triumph of the American manufacturer
Singer. His first sewing machines were barely built, when their inventor suffered violent setbacks, as workers
destroyed what they saw as the calculated end of their livelihood. He was, then, dispossessed of his patents no less
than three times, on each occasion leading to his own poverty. Yet, against the odds, he continued to improve his
sewing machine, in which he believed to the point of self-delusion. But other machines had already won the market
he was dreaming of conquering. When he died in 1857, Thimonnier had joined the ranks of underpaid workers,
leaving nothing behind him, not even his sewing machine.
Yamina Benahmed Daho interweaves a masterful piece of narration on manual work in the 19 th century and its
industrialisation and its battles seen through the trajectory of a man, his hopes and misfortunes with the tale of her
family’s sewing machine, bought in the 1960s in Algeria, which enabled her mother to improve their material and
financial condition. A powerful, personal narrative, which lends both depth and authenticity to this book, based on
an ordinary and familiar object, the story of which she wanted to retrace.
Yamina Benahmed Daho has authored Poule D, her debut novel dedicated to female football, and De mémoire,
the story of a woman, whose attempted rape reduced her to fear, as well as a reflection of violence, published in the
L’Arbalète collection.

Le Miel et l'Amertume / Honey and Bitterness
Roman - Blanche - 272 pages - janvier 2021

Mourad and Malika live hunkered down in the basement of their home in Tangiers, Morocco. The staircase, once
resplendent, is desperately empty and gathering dust. Apart from one of their sons, no one ever walks through the
door anymore. A chilling silence haunts the defeated couple and pushes them apart. In the early 2000s, a dramatic
event unfolded, which is never talked about… but will be revealed, little by little, throughout the pages of their
daughter Samia’s diary.
There she records her life as a teenager, her friends, her school, her passion for music and poetry. And then her
meeting with the one she calls the Khenzir (the “pig” in Arabic). An elegant and sophisticated man who runs a
poetry journal. And who, with the pretext of wanting to publish her, proposes they meet in his flat and rapes her.
Unable to speak, overwhelmed with shame, Samia falls into despair...
Le Miel et l’Amertume lays bare the feeling of guilt, the loss of self-esteem, the breaking point when a couple can
no longer cope. An unexpected encounter will allow the seed of life to sprout again, and words to be freed.
Tahar Ben Jelloun is a writer and poet. He has recently published with Éditions Gallimard La Punition (2018),
L’Insomniaque (2019), as well as Douleur et lumière du monde (2019). His novels are gathered in the Quarto
collection.
Rights sold in Arabic (Dar al-Saqi) and Farsi (Borj Books).

L’Iran à fleur de peau / Iran under the Skin
____________________________________________________________________________________________
Élodie Bernard embarks us on a journey to Iran through narrative fragments, which retrace her numerous trips there
between 2005 and 2015. In the course of a decade, the reader and the author crisscross a country that gradually
becomes familiar. She describes the political situation in Iran, and in doing so, brings us closer to its people, and
their everyday lives – whether in the capital or in other large cities – and shares the emotions arising from this
pivotal period.
She also unveils her concerns, those of a French woman in Iran, with its mix of customs and strict rules, in the
midst of a political reconstruction, and at the same time, marvels at the warm welcome she receives from the
families she sees regularly, and at the empowerment of Iran’s youth.
Born in 1984, Élodie Bernard is the author of the first book published in the collection Le Sentiment
géographique: Le vol du paon mène à Lhassa.

Cavalier noir / Dark Rider
____________________________________________________________________________________________
Separated from his wife, having given up on his former life, a man leaves Paris, with his bike and his writings. The
train takes him to a misty forest, somewhere near the old city of Heidelberg, where a mysterious German woman of
disturbing beauty and intelligence awaits him.
The narrator huddles with his young lover in a cabin nestled deep in the woods; he gets caught up in her cold
romanticism and sees the sinister memories of his twenties rearing their head again. For he was once shut away in
his highschool-cum-fortress, and forced into learning a deadly form of French, dominated by asceticism and acts of
contrition, very far from the radiant French of which once he had dreamt. His love for a woman and his love of
French intermingle in this book, which confirms, once again, the burning obsession of its author for a sensual and
carnal language. It is also a magnificent and poetic reinterpretation – conducted with the delicate speed of a
bicycle – of Germanic landscapes, of forests still imbued with the memory of Romantic poets, and the ghosts of
German folly.
After Forcenés and L’Invention de l’écriture, two prose-poem-essays, Philippe Bordas has published two novels,
Chant furieux and Cœur-Volant. Cavalier noir is his third novel. Also a photographer, he was awarded the Prix
Nadar for a book that blended text and photos: L’Afrique à poings nus (Seuil, 2004).

Carnivale
Roman - Verticales - 392 pages - janvier 2021
____________________________________________________________________________________________
A flowing tale told at magisterial length, Carnivale offers several narrative forms, which gradually unveil
silhouettes, worlds and eras that blend into one another according to three emerging patterns.
At the heart of this quasi-mythological system, variations of the same Faustian pact are replayed, each protagonist
having to pass on their existential debt to their neighbour in order to find a way through their personal damnation,
by making compromises with the realities of the actual world. Hence the differing versions of the same scene,
which, far from contradicting themselves, end up aggregating into a circular meta-narrative that follows the
delusive rationale of a waking dream. This is when the enchanting language of Nicole Caligaris, a free-jazz lover,
returns to embrace the classics of crime fiction, among other less critically celebrated literary genres, to bring them
together in disharmony.
In addition to a handful of illustrated books and literary fragments, Nicole Caligaris has mainly published works of

Villes. Galpa – Malestroit. Chroniques du silence – Voyage à Waïzata
Cities. Galpa – Malestroit. Chronicles of silence – Journey to Waïzata
____________________________________________________________________________________________
“Although these three books are related, they’re not very fond of each other, and it shows”, says Marcel Cohen
about his three first works, gathered here for the first time. Warmly received when they first appeared, and long
sold out in the bookshops, these books nonetheless form a trilogy. While each of these cities is indeed real, it is so
in its own way, and its depiction by the author oscillates between feature story, hyperrealism and waking dream.
Simultaneously, the reader bears witness to a young writer’s particular hit-and-miss approach, and to the
wanderings of a man in the determined pursuit of himself.
Marcel Cohen is the author, among other works published with Éditions Gallimard, of short narratives which do
not pertain to any particular literary genre, including Faits, Lecture courante à l’usage des grands débutants
(2002), Faits, II (2007), Faits, III, Suite et fin (2010). These books, which appear as manifestoes, were followed by
Détails in 2017. Détails, II, Suite et fin is being published now, at the same time as Villes. The few memories that
the author has kept of his family, who were deported during WWII, are gathered in Sur la scène intérieure (2013).

Détails, II. Suite et fin / Details, II. Final instalment
____________________________________________________________________________________________
As in the first volume Détails, which he is completing and extending in this new book, the author explores the
thousands of “little nothings” which we overlook on a daily basis. Be they the stripes of a zebra, a night in a
hospital’s emergency ward, a butterfly larva in a poet’s workbook, a fishing boat boarded by an enemy submarine
during WW1, the shabbiness of New York City’s elevators, or a little girl piling up heaps of sand, the author shows
a one-of-a-kind sense of observation, of introspection, and of history. By lingering on minute details and hard facts,
he turns traditional viewpoints upside-down, and so leads the reader to look and think in a new way.
These books, which, through their very titles, appear as
manifestoes, were followed by Détails in 2017. Détails, II, Suite et fin is being published now, at the same time as
Villes. The few memories that the author has kept of his family, who were deported during the war, are gathered in
Sur la scène intérieure (2013). Marcel Cohen’s books have been translated into ten languages.
12Stéphanie COSTE
Le Passeur / The People Smuggler
1er roman - Blanche - 136 pages - janvier 2021
____________________________________________________________________________________________
When “hope is your stock-in-trade”, as Seyoum cynically puts it, when you’ve become one of the biggest
smugglers working on the Libyan coast, and your brain is consumed by a mix of khat and alcohol, are you still
capable of showing humanity? This is precisely the issue that emerges when the love of his life shows up in yet
another convoy filled with desperate candidates willing to cross the sea. Seyoum hasn’t seen Madiha for years, and
with her ghostly presence, their entire past resurfaces, all of a sudden: the destruction of both their families by the
dictatorship in Eritrea, his forced enlistment in the military camp Sawa, the scenes of torture, his running away, and
the imprisonment that followed…
Through the intermingled fates of these migrants and their tormentor, Stéphanie Coste paints a broad fresco of the
history of a wounded continent. Her incredibly powerful, fast-paced writing style, as sharp as a billhook, leads us
into the depths of man’s folly.
Stéphanie Coste lived between Senegal and Djibouti until her adolescence. She settled in Lisbon several years ago.
Le Passeur is her first novel.
13Florence DELAY
____________________________________________________________________________________________
“One would reach Miradour on a bad barely-tarred road which went up and round in circles. The slope was so
steep that Madeleine’s old car would often break down half way up the hill. Then there was no other solution but to
fetch a couple of oxen from the nearest farm.”

Roman - Continents Noirs - 256 pages - janvier 2021

At over eighty years of age, Mado, born of a Swedish father and a Cameroonian mother, lives in Perpignan and
reminisces about her childhood in Edea, Cameroun, on the banks of the red and white river, prior to the outbreak of
WWII, with all its horrors and upheavals. She pictures her unexpected departure for France with her adopted
mother and her frazzled nerves. Here they were, giving a standing ovation to General de Gaulle, as they stopped
over in Temara, Morocco. And there, another stopover in Constantine, Algeria, where the Allies’ victory ended in
an explosion of joy, as well as in outbursts of anger. Once in Perpignan, Mado lamented the cold and the sideways
glances she would get for being a grieving child of colour, who long thought her biological mother was dead. It was
eventually in Céret, Southern France, that Mado became the friend and secret muse of several renowned artists,
such as Picasso, Matisse, Haviland, Soutine, Chagall, Masson, and Dali.
A doctor in French and comparative literature, Eugène Ébodé has won several distinctions and literary awards.
Éditions Gallimard has recently published, among other works, Le Balcon de Dieu (2019), La Transmission
(Folio), and La Rose dans le bus jaune (Folio).

The Child You Were is Still Walking Beside You
____________________________________________________________________________________________
On 11 December 2018, the city of Strasbourg was hit by a terrorist attack on the heart of its Christmas market. Both
the witness and victim of such horror, the narrator believed his last hour had come. Snippets of his past resurfaced,
filled with unwonted emotions.
Gaston-Paul Effa acutely captures the pivotal moments of childhood, which define the adult we will become. He
recounts how rediscovering the child we once were is a means to overcoming the wounds of life.
Imbued with memories and dreams of exile, this novel of resilience enables us to move beyond the – at times
dramatic, at times exhilarating – borders between childhood and manhood.
A professor of philosophy and a literary columnist for the weekly La Semaine, Gaston-Paul Effa has authored,
among other works, La Verticale du cri (2019).

Marina A.
Roman - Blanche - 176 pages - janvier 2021
____________________________________________________________________________________________
In 2018, chancing upon a retrospective of the artist Marina Abramovic, Paul Gachet emerges from the exhibition
quite shaken up. The self-inflicted mutilations of Marina A shock him. But he also finds himself to be fascinated, to
the point of obsession, by this woman, by what she seems to want to reveal through her very peculiar artistic career.
One, that over the years, will strive towards a search for harmony with others. Especially with her partner Ulay,
from whom she solicits an infinite trust in extreme performances.
In 2020, looking through a magazine, Paul Gachet finds an old picture of Marina A and Ulay taken in 1983.
Entitled “The Impossible Rapprochement”, it shows two people who would like to touch each other but are
mysteriously prevented from doing so. As the global pandemic breaks out, Paul Gachet sees in Marina A’s
performance art a premonition of disaster to come, as if the expression of that art was a warning, the significance of
which he finally understands. An incentive to protect the other, to rebuild our societies based on these two little
words: “after you”.
This “encounter” with Marina A and her artistic universe has a profound effect on how Paul Gachet perceives his
relationship to others. An uncomfortable realisation of the damage caused by Western individualism, which has
ultimately altered who we are. By revealing a vulnerable, yet necessarily supportive, humanity, Marina A has
awakened him.
A journalist and novelist, Éric Fottorino has notably published with Éditions Gallimard: Chevrotine (2014),
Trois jours avec Norman Jail (2016), Dix-sept ans (2018) and, with Nicolas Vial, Le Temps suspendu (2020).

Ici-bas / Here on Earth
1er roman - Blanche - 208 pages - janvier 2021

The narrator and his father leave the hospital, where the latter, a former professor of medicine, ran the department
of oncology. Today, dealing with a degenerative disease at almost ninety-years old and severely disabled
physically, he goes home after completing a stay of a few weeks in the geriatric unit.
The patriarch created two lines of descent, with a generation between them. Aged thirty, the narrator is the
youngest: he has an older brother, Stéphane, an emergency doctor, and two much older half-sisters, Sylvie and
Anne-Marie. Throughout the week, the narrator stays at his sick father’s side every day, and attempts to gauge the
extent of his dementia. He questions his own role, struggles to overcome his disgust at the menial chores involved
in nursing the old, quarrels with his brother on the benefits or otherwise of living so long, and in such poor health.
One morning in October, Saouda, the caregiver, tells the narrator that his father died in his sleep. Although he
dreads the impending funeral, he is rather pleased to hear the displays of affection. One month later, the urn is
secured on the grave, and the two lines of siblings, bickering about the inheritance, no longer talk to one another:
the family definitely died at the same time as did its progenitor, yet life, as ever, goes on.
Pierre Guerci was born in 1987 and lives in Paris. Ici-bas is his first novel. He is currently writing a PhD thesis.

Mike
Roman - Sygne - 272 pages - janvier 2021

“I had a friend, Mike, an American architect, who shared his time between Minnesota and New Mexico, as well as
enjoying numerous trips with his wife, Gloria.
What brought us really close was our common practice of observational drawing. Taking our sketch books and
pencils, blending as much as possible with the life around us, and drawing what we saw. Over the years, Mike, like
myself, produced tens of thousands of drawings.
He fell ill, fought for a year and a half, and then felt himself succumbing. A few hours before dying, he expressed
the wish of staging together a sort of ceremony. He wanted to draw his last picture in my presence. I flew to
Minneapolis, and spent three days with him. We swapped our sketch books. He made two drawings in mine, I made
two in his, side by side. I went back home with my sketch book. Mike died three days later.
The sketch book is still here. I started writing this story to talk about this man, and the essential role that
observational drawing has had in both our lives.”

In his first work without images, Emmanuel Guibert reveals a genuine talent for writing, where his sense of
observation, the precision of his style, his modesty and tenderness serve to articulate a generous vision of human
nature.
Emmanuel Guibert is one of the leading authors of the contemporary comics scene. He won numerous awards in
France and abroad and was awarded the ‘Grand Prix 2020 de la ville d’Angoulême’ for his entire body of work.

La Poursuite de l'idéal / In Pursuit of the Ideal
Roman - Blanche - 496 pages - janvier 2021

Living as a poet in today’s world – such is the ideal of Cyrille Bertrand, the son of a teacher and a plumber who
grew up in Dourdan, a small suburban town. But this ideal clashes with the reality. Indeed, while his brilliant
classmate and friend, Ambroise d’Héricourt, begins a career in the world of the press and media, Cyrille takes on a
series of jobs as bartender in Dourdan, supply teacher in a secondary school, and even department supervisor in a
supermarket, where he discovers trade unionism. As for his love life, he’s in a relationship with Amandine, a high
school teacher who wants to have a child with him, while he’s secretly in love with Constance, Ambroise’s sister.
While his ideal of leading a poetic life is increasingly threatened, Ambroise and Constance offer him a dream job as
the assistant of an academic whom he admires and who has been tasked with launching the Museum of French
Literature. When the project goes south, Cyrille joins Ambroise and becomes the successful screenwriter of a
blockbuster TV series, far away from his poetic dreams. On the evening of his thirtieth birthday, Cyrille feels
nonetheless deeply dissatisfied by his success, and makes a surprising decision…
Will he have to disown his ideals or abandon the standard-issue life in which he has done so well? There lies the
very issue of this major contemporary coming-of-age novel, which revisits Balzac, Stendhal, as well as Flaubert. In
this modern “Human Comedy”, the author begins a humorous yet deep reflection about our society, and more
broadly, about life itself.
Patrice Jean, born in 1966, is the author of five novels with Éditions Rue Fromentin. L’Homme surnuméraire
(2017) won both public and critical acclaim, and stands among the “cult” novels of the past few years.
20Marcel JOUHANDEAU / Michel LEIRIS
Correspondance 1923-1977 / Correspondence 1923-1977

Edition prepared by Denis Hollier and Louis Yvert
Foreword by Denis Hollier
This brief, previously-unpublished and unexpected correspondence, which comprises 94 letters between Michel
Leiris and Marcel Jouhandeau, from 1923 to 1977, unveils a little-known relationship between the two major
writers, who meet in 1923 through Max Jacob. One night, in 1924, under the influence of alcohol and lyricism, they
experience a “mystical” union, which in turn becomes a homosexual relationship. Fairly quickly, Leiris (22)
realising that Jouhandeau (35) is in love with him, offers him his friendship instead.
In 1936, Jouhandeau is hurt by the obscure excerpts that relate to him in Leiris’ L’Âge d’homme, yet some time
later, it is Leiris who breaks things off because of Jouhandeau’s anti-Semitic profession of faith for the Action
française. They reconnect in 1937, their “friendship under the ashes” is not dead, writes Jouhandeau. In 1940,
Leiris is enlisted in Algeria and sends news from the front. Because of the war, the correspondence stops until
1966. Yet, their shared memories and mutual affection remain, and the two men exchange about ten letters between
‘66 and ‘77.
Marcel Jouhandeau (1888-1979) was born in Guéret, in central France. While studying in Paris, he becomes
aware of his homosexuality. Despite this, he marries Élizabeth Toulemon in 1929. The twists and turns of his
shambolic marriage would provide plenty of material for his books.
Michel Leiris (1901-1990) took part in the Surrealist movement from 1924 to 1929. From 1930, he led a double
career as a writer and as an ethnologist.
