At a meeting of the International Olympic Committee Executive Board in July, I had the great honour of

more importantly, it is fantastic and important for the entire Gymnastics family.

On a more sombre note, we have been developing measures to prevent a recurrence of the recent
tragedy which happened in women’s Gymnastics in the USA. We must work together to ensure our
sport is as safe as possible, and emulate the courage shown by those incredible gymnasts who have
spoken out. The FIG has undertaken an in-depth review of policies and rules and strengthened our
legal tools to better prevent any new cases and assist victims. I am proud that an independent body
will soon be established to deal with any kind of harassment, abuse or violation of the ethical rules.

Gymnastics.
Becoming an IOC member does not mean to seek the benefit for Gymnastics. It means that we become
responsible for the development of the entire sport. The FIG has a longer history than the IOC.
We must respect the achievements made by our predecessors, and the FIG should become a role
model for sports bodies across the world.

(CE) au Bénin. Nous entendons poursuivre le
développement de la gymnastique à l’échelle
mondiale en organisant des réunions du CE
dans des pays en voie de développement.

La troisième réunion du Comité exécutif s’est tenue récemment dans le Pacifique, aux Fidji. C’est là que le
CE a approuvé la constitution et les règles opérationnelles de la Fondation éthique de la gymnastique qui
seront soumises au Congrès au mois de décembre. La FIG a une longue et riche histoire dont la famille de la
gymnastique peut s’enorgueillir avec raison. Or, la fierté n’est de mise que dans le respect le plus strict des
principes de bonne gouvernance et de conformité éthique. Notre objectif est de devenir les chefs de file,
dans le monde du sport, de la bonne gouvernance et de la conformité. Cette structure nous permettra de
mieux protéger les athlètes ainsi que les fédérations de chaque pays.
Lors de cette même réunion aux Fidji, c’est avec plaisir que le CE a appris que les sept fédérations
océaniennes membres de la FIG se réuniront en septembre à Auckland (NZL) pour mettre sur pied l’Union
océanienne de gymnastique (UOG). L’UOG sera reconnue par la FIG lors du Congrès de décembre prochain.

Comme annoncé précédemment, une des réunions 2019 du CE se déroulera au Nicaragua.
Les 48es Championnats du monde de gymnastique artistique se tiendront pour la première fois au Moyen-
Orient avant la fin de l’année, dans la capitale qatarie Doha. Ce sera la deuxième fois cette année, après la
11e Coupe du monde, que le magnifique Aspire Dome sera le théâtre d’une compétition de gymnastique
artistique.
A la FIG, nous continuons d’œuvrer en faveur du fair-play et de la justice dans les sports à jugement. Pour
y parvenir et fournir à la gymnastique artistique un soutien objectif, précis et en temps réel, nous sommes
fiers de travailler avec Fujitsu à la mise en place d’un système d’aide au jugement, de saisie de données et
d’essais sur le terrain dont le lancement est prévu en 2020. Ce système sera testé en octobre à Doha. Parkour is included as initiation sport

Je suis ravi que les activités d’initiation au Parkour soient inscrites au programme des Jeux olympiques de la
Jeunesse 2018 à Buenos Aires, au mois d’octobre. Cela aura constitué un des principaux sujets de discussion
de la réunion de la commission FIG Parkour, en juillet. Ainsi, après avoir été présenté à Lillehammer lors des
Jeux olympiques de la Jeunesse d’hiver 2016, Parkour fera cette fois son apparition dans un environnement
olympique en été.
Avec les efforts déployés pour obtenir la reconnaissance du CIO, nous espérons que mon entrée au CIO sera
approuvée. Or, la seule nomination à un rôle si prestigieux est en soi un résultat majeur pour la gymnastique,
ne l’oublions pas.
Devenir membre du CIO ne signifie pas demander des avantages pour la gymnastique mais plutôt se
voir confier la responsabilité du développement du sport dans son ensemble. La FIG a une tradition plus
ancienne que le CIO. Nous devons respecter ce qu’ont fait nos prédécesseurs et la FIG doit devenir un
modèle pour les instances sportives internationales.

In the Clubs final, Dina Averina led a repeat of the Pesaro
podium from 2017, with the Russian taking the gold
medal over Katsiaryna Halkina (BLR) and twin sister
Arina. Dina performed a dynamic routine with the Clubs
for the highest score of the final, 19.000, to defend her
world title, while her twin sister won the bronze in yet
another double podium finish for the Averinas.
A fans’ favourite wherever she competes, Halkina
delighted the Sofia audience earning the highest

SAITO UNSTOPPABLE
Japan’s first-ever Individual Men’s world champion, Mizuki
Saito, retained his crown in Portugal, leading a repeat podium
as Hungary’s Dániel Bali once again won silver ahead of 2014
world champion Iván Veloz of Mexico.
If one single gymnast stood out among the crowd of
competitors in Guimarães, it was Saito, 22, who switched his
style, abandoning his rock’n’roll set from 2016 to perform to
the classical “New World Symphony” by Dvořák. His thrilling
combination of artistry and athleticism brought the highest two
scores of the competition in Guimarães both in qualification
and in the final.
Bali, also 21, didn’t back down from Saito’s challenge, winning
his third consecutive world medal in the Individual Men’s
following silver in 2016 and bronze in 2014. After finishing sixth
in qualification, the 27-year-old Veloz gave it his all in the final
to win the bronze, a triumph for him one year after undergoing
knee surgery.

Le Japonais de 22 ans a bien marqué ces Mondiaux à
Guimarães, en changeant radicalement de style. Après
le rock’n’roll en 2016, c’est sur de la musique classique, la
«Symphonie du Nouveau Monde» de Dvořák, qu’il a livré sa
performance, un exaltant mélange d’artistique et de prouesses
athlétiques crédité des meilleures notes de la compétition, en
qualifications et en finale.
Bali, 21 ans aussi, n’a pas démérité, en empochant sa troisième
médaille consécutive aux Mondiaux dans la catégorie, après
l’argent en 2016 et le bronze en 2014. Sixième des qualifications,
Veloz, 27 ans, a tout donné en finale pour rafler le bronze, un
beau succès pour lui un an après son opération à un genou.
