The Llobregat and its main tributary, the Cardener, run through the Bages district from
north to south and the main centres of population developed around it. In the Middle
Ages a thriving Manresa built the irrigation channel 27 kilometres long which, still today,
supplies the city with water from the Llobregat. Later, beside the river, factories developed
which made this district one of those with the greatest industrial tradition in Catalonia.
