A fourth killer spring

Get ready for suspense and many good reads as the fourth edi-
tion of Les Printemps meurtriers gets under way in Knowlton.
From May 14 to the 17 come and meet as many as sixteen authors
who excel at the art of writing thrillers in the tradition of Agatha
Christie. Many of the Festival’s twenty activities are open to all
and are free such as a meeting with author Benoît Bouthillette at
the Auberge Lakeview on Saturday morning or a talk with Patrick
Sénécal at the Community Centre. Searching for clues throughout
Knowlton will be the activity of the day on Saturday afternoon
starting at the Star Café at 2 p.m..
All in all a full week-end that promises to attract a large group of
fans as well as visitors to Knowlton to start the new tourist season.

The mayor, all the councillors, except Karine Fortin, and about
30 people were present.
Question period – A citizen asked what was going on concern-
ing the NuHab Centre? The mayor answered there would be no
vote on this before the consultation meeting on April 11.
Administration – The accounts payable were all approved:
$20,360 for salt on roads, $26,160 for garbage burying.
Many financial contributions were approved: $435,000 to
LSCLB (Community Services), $ 6,899 to the Bergeron Gagnon
firm relating to additional fees regarding the heritage properties
inventory. The First Responders mandated Pierre Laplante, Fire
Department Director, to sign in their name any document regard-
ing financial aid or donations. Fire Department will buy respirato-
ry apparatus for the firefighters at a cost of $78,424.45. Allard &
Allard got the contract for the levelling of the roads in Iron
Hill/Foster in the amount of $49,432.56 and the firm Roger Dion
obtained the one for West Brome at $44,583.85.
The allocation to the First Responders was increased to $45
from $40 for 12 hours of continuous work as of January 1.
Notice of motion was given for borrowing money for recon-
struction repairs and maintenance of many roads.
Land use & environment – The monthly report and the min-
utes of the Urbanism committee (CCU) and the Environment
committee were deposited. Many exterior changes were accepted
for the color of awnings and signs. Also approved was a minor
change at the Fisher Point under certain conditions. Councillor
Louise Morin was named president of the CCU and the following
persons members of the committee: Roger Hébert, District 1; Lyla
Wilson, District 2; David Kininmonth, District 3; Armand Gaudet,
District 4; Owen Falquero, District 5; David Harrer, District 6;
David Hall, agricultural sector; Kevin Barnes, business sector.
Public Works – The town authorized the buying of a new
vehicle at the cost of $24,999.
Leisure Culture & Community Life – Many requests of
financial aid were accepted: The Pettes Library: $108,000; Brome
County Historical Society: $50,000; Brome Lake Theatre:
$20,000; Support Funds Leisure, Culture, Tourism and Sports of
$2,000 to Knowlton Tour.
Authorization to use public domain for numerous events:
Canada Day, June 27 or 28 (rain ) Tour of Brome Lake: June 12 to

Under municipal competence bylaw, financial aid was approved

Hydro-Québec bill.

Période de questions – Un citoyen demande ce qui se passe à pro-
pos du Centre Nu Hab. Le maire précise qu’il n’y aura pas de vote
avant la tenue de l’assemblée de consultation publique du 11 avril.
Administration – Des factures et dépenses diverses ont été
approuvées: 20 360,22$ pour le sel des routes, 26 160,76$ pour l’en-
fouissement des déchets. Plusieurs contributions financières de la
ville ont été approuvées: 435 000$ à Loisirs et services communau-
taires; 6899$ à la firme Bergeron Gagnon pour des frais additionnels
reliés à l’inventaire du patrimoine. Les Premiers Répondants confient
à Pierre Laplante, directeur du service des incendies, le mandat de
signer tout document de nature d’aide financière ou de don pour les
Premiers Répondants. Le service des incendies fera l’acquisition
d’appareils respiratoires pour les pompiers au coût de 78 424,45$. La
firme Allard et Allard a obtenu le contrat de nivellement des chemins
pour Iron Hill/Foster au montant de 49 432,56$ et la firme Roger
Dion a obtenu celui de West Brome au montant de 44 583,85$.

For many of us, libraries and literacy have an obvious connec-
tion, but that connection is not a given for many adults that strug-
gle with limited literacy skills. Statistics confirm that 49% of
Quebec adults face challenges decoding printed materials.
Pettes Memorial Library has been a longtime friend of literacy,
offering free space for the Yamaska Literacy Council’s tutors and
students. Jana Valasek, Executive Director of the library in
Knowlton, approached the Yamaska Literacy Council about how
best to invite new readers into the library. According to Valasek,
“We wanted our services to be friendly to adults who struggle

Club des Lions de Knowlton, Winston Mason, explique que « Les

Wellness Centre holds AGM

The TBL Wellness Volunteer Centre held its 28th Annual
General Meeting at the Community Centre on February 16, 2015.
The Volunteer Centre’s mission is to help our seniors live inde-
pendent lives and to this end, in 2014, volunteers delivered 2,262
Meals-on-Wheels, drove 17 clients to appointments, made
Friendly Visits to seven seniors and have 39 seniors using our
Emergency Alert units. Also, until September of this year, every
Tuesday volunteers worked alongside the professionals manning
the Senior Day Centre. This program started again on April 14.
Wellness also subsidized the “Balance for Seniors” classes that
take place in the Community Centre. Four luncheons and a
Christmas Tea were very well attended.
If any of the services we offer are of interest to you, call the
Community Centre at 450-242-2020 and one of our most trust-
worthy volunteers will be in touch with you. Our Friendly visitors
would love to do more visiting, so give us a call!
Wellness regretfully said goodbye to two long-term Board
members – Doreen Reglin, who served for fourteen years and
Frank Wilkinson, who served for nine years. We wish them all the
best. A warm welcome to two newcomers, Gib Rotherham who
will take over Meals-on-Wheels and Rachel Massicks who will
work on the Publicity Committee.
