This is an event where you, the readers, can borrow human beings serving as books and have open and honest conversations. It is an opportunity for readers to ask questions and learn from the experiences of others. Every human book from our bookshelf represents a group in our society that can be subjected to prejudice, stigmatization, or discrimination because of their lifestyle, diagnosis, belief, disability, social status, ethnic origin, etc. All our human books are volunteers with personal experience with their topic. Difficult questions are expected, appreciated, and answered. Why this program? Because we all need to learn not to judge, Page 2 NAVIGATOR FLASH | MAY/JUNE 2021 sdglibrary.ca

MEET THE STAFF Meet Susan Casual Support Assistant (Glengarry branches) If you’re a regular visitor to the Alexandria, Lancaster, Maxville or Williamstown branches, then you’ve probably met Susan! She’s one of our casual branch staff that helps out when our regular staff are off or need help with a program. Find out more about the role Susan plays with the Library. Q: Tell us about what you do for the SDG Library. A: As one of the Casual Support Assistants (CSA) for our North and South Glengarry branches, I fill in for the LSAs (Library Service Assistants) as needed. We work the circulation desk, help patrons in all sorts of ways, shelve materials, etc. Prior to the pandemic we also worked many shifts assisting LSAs during Library programs and when double staffing was required. Q: If you could tell people one thing about the SDG Library, what Q: How long have you been with the Library? would it be? Book Review Eight Detectives by Alex Pavesi Book review by Margaret Piper, Systems Librarian I’ve noticed a trend lately – books inspired by golden age murder mysteries that are self-referential in nature. Meta-mysteries, I guess? Someone else has probably come up with a better name for it, but I’ve noticed quite a few like this and I’m enjoying the extra layer of nuance that comes with it. My most recent read was Eight Detectives, which features editor Julia Hart interviewing Grant McAllister about a set of mysteries he wrote thirty years earlier in the 1930s. The format of the book is a delight. One chapter features the two discussing his work and the mathematical theories they are based on. Alternate chapters are the mysteries themselves. It’s a little like reading short stories and then listening in on a really good book club discussing it. Of course, I won’t ruin the ending, but there’s a mystery that plays out between Julia and Grant outside of the stories themselves. My only mild criticism is that some of the self-referential material was a little heavy-handed. A picture of a picture as a clue? A little over the top! We get it! But other than that, I very much enjoyed myself. The next read I have lined up that is in the same vein is Anthony Horowitz’s Magpie Murders – I’ll let you know how it goes. Borrow a copy of Eight Detectives, available in print and eBook.
