Indigenous Peoples and the Church:
Walking Together Toward Healing & Reconciliation
Les peuples autochtones et l'Église :
Marcher ensemble vers la guérison et la réconciliation
Canada is home to a large and diverse Indigenous population. The Bishops in Canada share a profound commitment to
renewing and strengthening relationships with Indigenous Peoples across Canada with whom the Catholic Church has
maintained relations since the 17th century. The Canadian Catholic Indigenous Council is the key element to this
commitment. Consisting of Bishops and Indigenous Catholics, the Council furthers relationships, healing, and joint
initiatives with Indigenous Peoples across Canada.
Throughout this year, we have been focused on the journey toward healing and reconciliation between Indigenous People
and the Church. Last week, a Delegation of Indigenous People traveled to Rome to meet with Pope Francis to share the
experiences which have negatively impacted their lives since early missionaries came to this land. Additionally, Pope
Francis has accepted the invitation of the CCCB to visit Canada on a pilgrimage of healing and reconciliation.

Le Canada compte une population autochtone importante et diversifiée. Les évêques du Canada partagent un
engagement profond à renouveler et à renforcer les relations avec les peuples autochtones du Canada avec lesquels
l’Église catholique entretient des relations depuis le XVIIe siècle. Le Conseil autochtone catholique du Canada est
l’élément clé de cet engagement. Composé d’évêques et de catholiques autochtones, le Conseil favorise les relations, la
guérison et les initiatives conjointes avec les peuples autochtones à travers le Canada.
Tout au long de cette année, nous nous sommes concentrés sur le chemin de la guérison et de la réconciliation entre les
peuples autochtones et l’Église. La semaine dernière, une délégation d’autochtones s'est rendu à Rome pour rencontrer le
pape François et lui faire part des expériences qui ont eu un impact négatif sur leur vie depuis l’arrivée des premiers
missionnaires sur cette terre.
De plus, le pape François a accepté l’invitation de la CECC à visiter le Canada dans le cadre d’un pèlerinage de guérison et
de réconciliation. Afin d'en apprendre davantage sur l’histoire des peuples autochtones et leur relation avec l’Église
catholique, nous vous invitons à visiter la page du site cecc.ca.
