Canada Trip 2018 This year saw Le Rosey’s second Canadian skiing trip, and students had the full Canada experience: an NHL game in Calgary, the beauties of the Canadian landscape from a dogsled and five amazing days in the Cariboo region in British Columbia. This was the true highlight of the whole trip – heli-skiing and endless, deep powder snow.
The Importance of Science and New Teaching Spaces It has been four years since we opened the Paul & Henri Carnal Hall and we have used Chalet Sandra in Schonried for no more than two winters! So, although we are set to renovate bedrooms over the next two winters, the heavier earth-moving equipment is never far away at Le Rosey, and the strategic plan for the next quarter of a century is now in the final stages of gaining council approval. We will then be in a position to continue the improvement of our facilities - most notably, in the shape of a new teaching area and great sports centre. The objective for these pedagogically-focused future projects is threefold: 1. To provide the teaching spaces of the future, ready to welcome a mix of individual work (assisted by artificial intelligence perhaps), lectures, collaborative work and of course, classes with one or two teachers in the room, where layouts can adapt according to the activities planned. In the long term, all current classrooms will be transferred to these new spaces. 2. To increase the exposure and importance of Science at Le Rosey by moving the whole department into the most modern laboratories, equipped with the latest materials and technology to allow the subject and students to thrive. Roséens will be able to complete advanced research projects and teachers will have access to glass-walled labs, with the aim of encouraging an interdisciplinary approach to Science, uniting its purpose and discoveries with other subjects to foster cross-curricular learning. 3. To instil the spirit of entrepreneurship into Roséens by, for example, housing several start-ups which will themselves benefit from the presence of Rosey students to test prototypes, carry out market research, receive design input and request science experiments through the development of interdisciplinary projects by each class. These projects will be essential for encouraging an entrepreneurial mentality amongst students. Predicting the future and how we envisage teaching Science, History or Entrepreneurship is as fascinating as it is complex. For several months, we have been organising several exploratory trips across the world, seeking inspiration from the most innovative ideas and keeping ahead of those international schools which specialise in technology. Recent visits have included: Hotchkiss, Choate, Dubai American Academy, Eton, Harrow, Wellington College, Khan Academy Labs, Shija Hutong in Beijing, and many more. Roséens and their teachers play a key part in these reflections on the future and the whole Roséen Alumni community, parents and friends are always welcome to share their ideas over a coffee on campus chez Ljubo!

Sports There are days or sporting competitions which will forever remain in our memory and which perpetuate the virtues of our school and its traditions. Joy, respect, solidarity and the thirst for victory take centre stage if only for a day. When the rowing skiff Carlo leaves its boatshed at dawn, years of Rosey sporting history are unfolding on the shores of Lac Léman. And we can say the same of the snowy slopes of the Bernese Oberland that welcome the famous Rosey Races. Even if technology and artificial intelligence are increasingly shaping the world in which we live, sporting traditions will always remain rooted in Le Rosey.

Arts & Music Performance learning is a total life-enhancing experience building self-confidence, collaboration skills, stress-management skills and pushing personal boundaries to their limits like no other experience can! It is of immeasurable value. This was an extraordinarily busy and successful year for the Performing Arts at Rosey where so many positive performance opportunities are offered to students. Here are some of the highlights! November 2017 & June 2018 Rosey Music Festivals – a week of music with over 8 hours of performances at each leading up to the end-of-term festivities. Fête de Noël 2017 Beauty and the Beast, the musical - the whole Junior section acting, singing and dancing in this wonderful Disney adaptation. Christmas Concert in the Rosey Concert Hall. Frédérick ou le Boulevard du Crime by Eric-Emmanuel Schmitt – performed in French by the Rosey Theatre Troupe. January 2018 Frédérick ou le Boulevard du Crime second performance for locals in the theatre in Château d’Œx. March 2018 Gala Concert in Saanen Church. April 2018 Kids Voice Final - in the Rosey Concert Hall with our own Rosey participant! May 2018 Dogora Project – 25 students were amongst 280 performers singing and playing with the Ensemble Vocal et Instrumental de Rolle and other local choirs and musicians to perform this interesting and unique work in the Rosey Concert Hall. The Hall was so full that the performance had to be projected onto a screen in the foyer! June 2018 ABRSM Practical Music Exams – over 70 entries, a record number with good results. Fête de fin d’année 2018 Concerts in the courtyard at La Combe – musicians performed in two concerts to celebrate 50 years of girls at Le Rosey. The theme was the 1960s!; Bullets Over Broadway by Woody Allen – a musical in the Rosey Concert Hall. 38 actors, singers and dancers on-stage performed with a live band in the orchestra pit while a large technical team of students supported the whole show off-stage. The music was jazz and the lively plot was recounted by New York gangsters and flappers with an amazing set and colourful costumes! Throughout the year... Concerts in the community – School of Rock and traditional concerts in Saanenland and Rolle often organised by IB students as part of their Service for CAS.
Bookfête Friday, September 28th 2018 was Le Rosey’s second International Book Festival known as "Bookfête". Once again, students enjoyed a late breakfast, and the PHCH was then open to eleven authors and academics from (this time) France, Italy, Switzerland, Spain, Norway, Guyana and the UK. The warm, summery day was divided up into three "plenaries" – whole-school events in the Concert Hall – and three “chapters” – a total of thirty-seven smaller events run by visitors, teachers and students, in three languages and on topics ranging from particle physics, colonial India and movies, to adventure stories, fan fiction and the philosophy of Harry Potter. We were really fortunate to have the Caribbean poets John Agard and Grace Nichols, whose readings were the highlights of the event. Chyulu Wilderness Camp Meeting Luca Belpietro – whose daughter is now a Roséenne – allowed Philippe Gudin to discover the authentic beauty of Africa. After ten years of "Voyages Honneur" to Campi Ya Kanzi, Luca’s outstanding lodge built at the foot of the Chyulu hills, on a vast Maasai ranch facing Kilimanjaro, Philippe decided, with Luca’s invaluable help, to build a camp dedicated to sharing this exceptional African experience with students from Rosey and other schools around the globe. In designing the Chyulu Wilderness Camp, Le Rosey aims to offer a life-changing experience in one of the most beautiful places on earth, between Mount Kilimanjaro and the Chyulu Hills. Students will stay in a superb ecological lodge, specially designed for young people from all over the world: a safe place in a protected environment. They will learn how to track animals and will discover the extraordinary variety of African wildlife. They will go on remarkable expeditions to the Chyulu Hills cloud forest. They will discover Maasai culture and traditions, play sport, create artwork, debate and teach in local schools. They will work in a tree nursery, on organic farms; and in helping to reforest the Maasai land, they will improve the well-being of this community and will protect wildlife. They will create their own conservation project and become its ambassador back in their school and home country. They will never forget Africa! Do We Need to Teach More than 20 Languages to be International? For some years now, International schools and related organisations have been wrestling with the word “international” when coupled with "school". It used to mean a national school in a "foreign" country serving expats. But no one really accepts that as definition any longer. So, could it simply mean schools that proclaim that they are international or "internationally minded" following the internationalist approach of the IB, for example? Some would say yes, but most would feel that this is not Statistiques & Nationalités au Rosey enough. So should we be more demanding, suggesting that the school has to have an international Le Rosey compte 447 élèves issus de 71 nations ; population of students and teachers (perhaps with a stipulation that no more than a certain celles qui comptent 10 Roséens et plus sont : française, percentage would be from one nationality)? Should it also have an international curriculum? suisse, britannique, chinoise, japonaise, américaine, Or should it even have different curricula from different countries? And what about languages? russe, indienne, bulgare, italienne, turque, mexicaine, Should there be more than one language of instruction? And what about other languages than espagnole. those of instruction? Shouldn’t there be a commitment to mother tongues? Some schools would get close to many of these criteria. Others would excel in some and fall short in others. Yet Le Rosey may be unique in satisfying them all. And possibly the most important of all is the commitment to mother tongues. It is not just the number taught in the school – nearly 30 since beginning the IB – more important is the mentality behind so many languages. Le Rosey is committed to its two world languages but also to the culture of its 70 nationalities. In fact without respecting national origins, perhaps the very word "international" has no value. To be international is not to forget national roots: it is to understand them and at the same time to respect and understand others. En bref, there can be no international without the national. The final word to Pushkin, a Russian of African origin, in an English translation of a poem inspired by a French translation of an English poet where he summarized the importance of our national origins and our mother tongues. In "Eugene Onegin" he was speaking of his own love of Russia and Russian but his words could just as well refer to any language and any homeland: Le Rosey compte 163 professeurs issus de 30 nations ; les quatre principales sont : britannique, suisse, française Land where I learned to love and weep et américaine. Land where my heart is buried deep Of course, many Roséens have more than one homeland, but that is, as they say, another story.
